im trying to get some symbols and text on my preloader page, but when i test the actual loading nothing comes up, unless i remove all the symbols and the text, then it works fine.
View 1 RepliesI created an AS3 preloader, and placed the code for that on frame one. I then made a symbol, and placed it in the library. It was set to NOT export on frame 1, and the fla's settings had all classes exported on frame two. There were no references to the object until frame two. Then, flash crashed whenever I compiled without the "Export in frame one" box checked. To fix this, a friend suggested I start my game logic on frame 3, so it will have properly loaded frame 2. That seemed to work fine, the class was instantiating properly. Then, it turned out that it was not loading the movieclip, only instantiating the class. Again, this could be fixed by exporting in frame 1, but I really cannot afford to do that.
The same friend suggested I place an instance of the symbol on the stage on frame 3, and perform game logic on frame 4. They said this would initialize the movieclip properly. However, this was not the case. How can I load the entire symbol, graphics and all, without exporting to frame 1? This single symbol will contain probably 10-20 MB of graphics, so it needs to be preloaded. EDIT: To make a long story short, all I need is some way to load a movieclip so it can be used and visible and everything. EDIT: Is there any way to force-load a movieclip via AS3?

View 1 RepliesI'm working through a book called Foundation Game Design with Flash, and I'm finding the Flash IDE confusing. I've been programming for several years, so working with AS3 directly is far easier than trying to understand symbols and nested symbols and the difference between graphics and movie clips and scoping issues and all that -- when tied into the IDE.
How many of you who are making games in AS3 also use the Flash IDE? Can anyone recommend a resource that is AS3 heavy and Flash IDE light? I don't care how much time I may or may not save by using things like the timeline, I just want to understand what I'm using.
I'm attempting to use CS4 (PC/Vista, if that matters) to create a SWF file that will basically act as a "library" of commonly used symbols. This SWF would be loaded at runtime by other SWFs, which could then use the symbols within it, including all art and code assets.

My flash movie is displayed in 9 regional languages and hence I have used TLF text for Flash Movie which easily displays Unicode text.SWF displays text properly when i publish it. but once i view the same SWF in Internet Explorer or any other browser it does not display text in those buttons.
View 36 RepliesI'm having trouble with dynamic text. I have a symbol with dynamic text fields in it. In the action script file I want to change the text of these text fields like this:
textFieldName.text = "new text";
But nothing happens. I cannot see any text when I play the movie. Also I tried adding a dynamic text field directly to stage and change the text with
textFieldName.text = "new text";
I can see the new text when I play the movie. Then I added my symbol that has the dynamic texts in it, and the text of the text field that is directly on stage disappears. When I delete my symbol, the text is back there. I'm using Flash CS5 and ActionScript 3.0.

It doesn't seem to happen on every browser. Refreshing the website, it happens maybe 1 out of every 5 times it's refreshed. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's driving me insane.

View 3 RepliesI have a site at [url]... with flash content on the home page. The preloader works fine the first time you load the page, but if you click any link on the page, and then hit "back" in Internet Explorer to get back to the home page, the preloader shows stuck at 100%.
The movie file has 2 frames. The 1st for the preloader, and the 2nd for the content. Here's the code for my preloader[code]...
my preloader is working when its first run, but it doesn't go to the 2nd frame if the page is refreshed. (Its for a swf that has about 9,000 frames but I don't think thats the issue)

every time i visit the page the whole preloader animation runs for 0 till 100. also if it is in your cache.
they use 20 stripes to load so (5 percent means 1 stripe!) but how can you animate your preloader if youre preloader does'nt always runs smoothly from 1 till 100?
[CS3 AS2]. I'm having trouble preloading a site I'm working on. I think I'm doing it correctly but the preloader page dosen't show up until its done loading. Then jumps straight to the 2nd frame because its loaded. I'm just doing a simple animation on frame 1 (as the preloader anim.) then when its finished loading, goToAndPlay frame 2.

I'm constructing a website in flash, and on each page of the website I have a dymanic text field pulling data from a .txt file for that page, (the news page has a dymanic text field called "newsText" which pulls data from "news.txt" for example) The website im working on is here: [URL] If you have a slower internet connection, whenever you click on the link to a new page, a small white square will appear in the corner before the content has fully loaded, this white square is a result of the scrollbar being disabled due to the content not being loaded yet (and thus having nothing to define wether or not it should need to scroll)
as the website grows in content this will become more and more of a problem. My actionscript ability is really limited. So whats the simplest way I can add a preloader to the page to load the content of the .txt file before displaying it?
I have a .fla that has a preloader on frame one and the rest of the file on frames 2 thru 55. The preloader code is the one that comes in Flash cs5's sample files. there is a movie clip with the instance name lbar and text with the name lpc. here is the code

It works fine the first time people are on my site but when the page is refreshed or is gone back to sometimes the loader bar is just stuck and doesnt load.
I have a problem with a preloader on a slideshow. The preloader works perfectly the first time the slideshow is loaded but if you move to another frame and then return the loader bar loads in the top left hand corner of the stage and does not function, it just duplicates every time you navigate back to the page.

When calling a swf with a two-scene preloader from within a Flash interface, the load status bar pops up showing 100% loaded, and the loader bar just sits there like that until the movie loads. The preload progress bars work as expected when the swf's are called from an HTML page.

i'm trying to build a flash site and ran into a problem... i have a gallery page with a bunch of page numbers at the top. when you click on one, a movieclip loads of some images coming in.so the problem i'm having is that i made a little animation for when you roll the mouse over the page number (they scale up when the mouse is over, scale back when the cursor moves away)... what it's doing is when you roll over, it goes to a certain frame in the timeline and plays that animation.that's all working cool, but i need it to not do that once it's clicked on. so basically when you actually click on a page number, the over script should stop until you go to another page... here's the code i've written,

I want is to take a the text from and input text box and when you press a submit button have it post to a php page. All was going well... but then I changed my code from value1 = "password" to value1 = password.text; and the php instead of coming back with the user's password, comes back undefined. WHY WHY WHy, does it except it when I say value1 = "password" and not with the value1 = password.text; (and 'password' is the instance name of the input text... (not using flash vars)

I'm trying to pull a variable from an ASP page that's pulling it's info from a database. The ASP page has a response.write that outputs &ScrollText = text that comes from the database. The ASP page works fine, but when I try to pull in the variable in Flash, it takes in all the html URL escapes, i.e.: %20 for a space %22 for a ", etc. I've tried using Server.URLEncode in my ASP page, but that didn't help any. I'm displaying this text in a dynamic text box with a scroll bar.
