ActionScript 3.0 :: [CS4] Instance Of A Shape Defined In A Class

Oct 14, 2009

I am trying to create a circle instance of FirstCircle class (by Milan Toth):

ActionScript Code:
package
{
import flash.display.Sprite;

[Code].....

I supposed the constructor would do all the work then. When testing the movie I get no error but no circle was displayed, trace statement put in the class constructor displayed the message ok. When I put the class code directly to the ACTION FRAME, it works fine.

what should I do to get the circle visible in the fla using the FirstCircle class?

ActionScript 3.0 :: 1061 Error (not Defined) When Call A Method Of A Self Defined Class

Feb 9, 2010

I am using flex builder 3.2, Action Script 3 and develop for Flash Player 10 and am quite new to it. when I call a method of a self defined class, I get the 1061 error (not defined). But the class and the method exist and are public, so what the hell am I doing wrong? Flash Builder is even offering me this method in the auto-completion, so at least the builder knows it... I have already tried cleaning the project (as this is the common source of strange errors when working with java/eclipse),

edit: solved... The problem was that a package had the same name as the variable I used for the class. Very strange error message, thumbs down for this .

Flash :: Unable To Convert An Instance Of A Class To An Instance Of The Class's Subclass?

Sep 15, 2011

I'm using a library that has a function that returns an instance of some class Engine.

I'd like to tack on some interfaces to Engine, so I subclass it class InterfacedEngine extends Engine implements AwesomeInterface. but when I change the code that uses the classes from this:

var engine:Engine = generateEngine();

to this: var interfacedEngine:InterfacedEngine = generateEngine();

It gives me a runtime error (elision mine):

TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert ...::Engine@1bc2bf11 to ....InterfacedEngine.

What about AS3 classes am I misunderstanding?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Values Held By A Class Instance From Another Class Instance?

Oct 14, 2009

I have to admit I pretty much ran away from Flash when AS2 came along and only used it for animation purposes over the last 5 years.So I'm having a major crash course in AS3 in Flash CS3 and I'm not enjoying it one bit. I'm getting maybe 10mins of finished work per hour as I try to figure out the limits and rules of AS3. Quite often it seems that AS3 simply can't do what I want it to. Anyway: Characterchecks.as is the main class and it loads a bunch of XML into four arrays. The file starts like this:[code]If I trace the value of, say, cc._Categories from the main FLA, it's empty. I'm guessing that the next line of AS in the main FLA doesn't wait for the previously called function to complete? (This may tie in to my next problem)My next step is that I want to display various things based on the data in the array. I have another class, Display.as which will hold all the functions to create the items on display. I thought it would be best for these to be a separate object. I wonder if I'm right?

So I declare an instance of Characterchecks in the main FLA and call it cc, and then run the functions to populate the arrays... Now I create an instance of Display and call it cd. How can I get functions in cd to see the values of the variables in cc? And if the main timeline can't tell that the functions aren't finished filling the arrays, how is cd supposed to know?I might be asking dumb questions, or maybe I'm doing things ***-backwards, I don't know. I'd appreciate any help, I really would. This whole thing has me at the end of my tether... being the most technically advanced person in my circle of co-workers and web design friends means I have no-one to explain why things need to be done a certain way or what the best way is.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Passing Instance In A Dynamically Defined Function

Feb 20, 2012

I'm trying to define this function so I can pass the CardButtons sprite to the Add Cards function. It "works" but there's one problem: the CardButtons sprite used in the function is determined by the value of i at the time of the function call (or in other words, the value of i when I click the sprite).

I want the sprite passed to be literally the value of CardButtons[i] at the point when the function was defined.

CardButtons[i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, CardFunctions[i]= function(){ AddCards(CardButtons[i],PlayerHand[player-1][PlayerHand[player-1].len gth-1]);});

Is there a way I can do this, or is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do?

I guess for further example:

I want CardFunction[0] to store the AddCards function with the value of CardButtons[0] passed, it should NOT be dependent on the value of i.

Flash :: Set Attribute Of Instance With Specified Name Defined On Multiple Frames?

Mar 26, 2010

I have a tab button in a movieclip with 3 different states keyframed - popup, hover and up. I use the textfield on each state to show tab title - the problem is I cannot use the same position for the textfield on each keyframe, so I keyframed the textfield's position. And in both keyframes for the textfield it has an instance name tabText. And when I assign text to it - it changes on one keyframe only. How should I resolve this situation without adding the textfield programmatically?

Professional :: Accessing A Variable Defined In One Class From Another Class

Mar 14, 2011

I've only been programming in as3 for a couple months, and so far I've written several compositional classes that take MovieClips as inputs to handle behaviors and interactions in a simple game I'm creating. One problem I keep coming upon is that I'd love to access the custom variables I define within one class from another class. In the game I'm creating, Main.as is my document class, from which I invoke a class called 'Level1.as' which invokes all the other classes I've written.Below I've pasted my class 'DieLikeThePhishes'. For example, I would love to know the syntax for accessing the boolean variable 'phish1BeenHit' (line 31) from another class. I've tried the dot syntax you would use to access a MovieClip inside another MovieClip and it doesn't seem to be working for me.[code]

ActionScript 3.0 :: Sending A Class Instance Reference To A Different Class Instance?

Apr 14, 2011

I'm creating a little game - The player controls a character that follows the mouse. Pigs run away from the player, and the player has to get them all into a pen. To make the game a little more difficult I'm trying to add an enemy - wolves, that attempt to perform a 'hunt' method every x seconds. This method sends a reference of the wolf instance to Main (my document class) and Main then loops through the pigs on stage to see if there's any nearby. Now as far as I know this works - my problem is I'm unsure how to send the pig instance reference back to the wolf that called the hunt method, so it can then 'target' the pig, and then attempt to pounce on it.

This is my Wolf class:

Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.Event;

Actionscript 3 :: Reference A Class Instance From Another Class Instance?

Dec 10, 2010

Quick question. I have been Googling this all morning, but it's either not there, or else written in a way that doesn't register. I am inclined to believe the latter, as this seems like it should be something completely trivial to me. I made a small Flash file using AS 3.0, and this is the first time I've really been able to stick to the OOP way of doing things and not hack together a mix of stuff from the timeline to get around not having everything work in the classes.

So I'd like to keep it that way, but one thing is eluding me: I can't call a method of an instance of another class (than the one I'm calling from) without resorting to "DocumentClass(root).instanceName.method." Intuition tells me there has to be a better way of doing this (like, without having to reference the document class every time I call another class instance's function; and CERTAINLY without having to use the word "root" - that just seems so Flash 5 to me. Does anybody have a better way of doing this that they can share?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Using Class Defined In External SWF?

Jul 7, 2008

I have two SWF files loader.swf and external.swf, external.swf is sitting on a remote server and I load it up from loader.swf using MovieClipLoader. external.swf includes a class definition for SomeClass by including a .as file, which also sits on the remote server. External.swf defines a method that returns an instance of SomeClass.

Once I've loaded up external.swf via loader.swf I can call the function that returns an instance of SomeClass. The problem is that laoder.swf seems to require a local copy of the as fiel that defines the class, rather than being able to receive the information it needs from external.swf, I really need to keep this class definition on the remote server, and not have a copy of it locally. Is thre any way I can encapsulate this within external.swf? I'm free to cahnge whatever I like.

Flex :: Set The Dimensions Of A Custom Component Defined In A Class?

May 22, 2010

Indeed, I've added transparent graphics just to give the component some dimensions

ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable flash.ui::MouseCursor is not defined
I first assumed that this could be perhaps because he was running an older version of Flash Player ( older than v10 ). But his screenshot clearly shows that it is running version 10 of the flash player.

ActionScript 3.0 :: NetStatusEvent Error When Main Class Defined

Oct 22, 2009

Ive got a flash file linking to a FMS, its just going to be a little game, all connects fine and I have a chat client working through this. My problem is when i come to use classes to import movieclips ect...

When i set the main Class name in the properties menu and play the swf, NetStatusEvent and SyncEvent are give me the following error...

1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant

If i remove the main Class name the swf connects to the server fine, or if i remove the code for the connection to the server and play the swf my movieclip attaches and behaves as the class files intended.

i may be doing a fundamental error here but i really cant see it and its annoying with the 2 aspects running independently but not together.

My question is how can I set up an interval when I click on a button that is created from within the class.

I need my function updater to keep repeating untill I clear the interval.The only way I can figure out is to give the full path like this._parent._parent.instanceName.updater inside the setInterval, but although this works I think is just dumb to hardcode the instace name of the class. I could of course try to pass the instance name as a parameter, but I would really love to find out the smart way to do this (by the book).

Actionscript 3 :: Flash Run A Function Only If Instance Within Function Is Defined

I have a situation where, upon loading my swf, I add an event listener to the stage to listen for keyboard commands. One of them is to listen for the spacebar, and if it is pressed, it should play a movie. The problem is, that movie is not loaded until later on, depending other user interactions, therefore, until it is loaded, the reference to it would be undefined.

But if I wait and add the listener for key commands only when the movie is loaded, then I can't utilize the listener for other keyboard commands, like RIGHT or LEFT, which are the buttons which get you to the movie in the first place. Is there a way to add a conditional or something to prevent that code from being executed if the video is not defined yet? Here's my code:
