ActionScript 3.0 :: Compiler Favors 'root Classpath' Definition Over Import Statements
Jan 28, 2010
I'm wondering if I'm the only one with this error. Is it a quirk or a feature? Should it be reported to Adobe as a bug?I found this out (after a while of frustration) that whenever I have a class in the root folder of the global classpath (or even in the same folder as the FLA, just not arranged into a package), even if I use an "import" statement for a "packaged" class with the same name, the compiler will still fetch and use the "global" class definition.[code]

I have a web application written in Flex and I'm trying to build an AIR application from the same code base using conditional compilation.
In the AIR application, I need to have import statements such as the following: import flash.data.SQLConnection; import flash.filesystem.File; but I cannot have these import statements in the web application because they are AIR only classes.
[Code]...
and similar approach to include web or AIR specific functions during compilation. The approach seems to have worked so far The only place I have run across issues is in my Cairngorm's model locator. If I put CONFIG::desktopMode around import statements in Cairngorm's model locator, it starts giving "Uncaught exception in compiler" or "1131 classes must not be nested" error. I'm not sure how to address this error!

I am being a bit puzzled on figure out how to release temporary identifiers to recycle them.For instances, suppose that I have 2 loops to instantiate dynamic mcs from library like this:
Code:
var zz:Number;
for (zz=0;zz<=4;zz++)[code]....
If I run this snippet of code, the compiler will complain and tell that I have a "Duplicate variable definition".I cannot understand why it doesnt complain when it is redefined five times within the first loop, and just complain because the second lop.Anyway, there is a way to release the _mc identifier then I can reuse it? I am an addicted to standartize names and recycle code...

Use Flash CS5 (and AIR, though this does not seem like it would be AIR related) in Win XP 64 I have a MovieClip symbol in my library with the identifier 'Puzzle10Piece10' with the following actionscript attached to frame 1 of the only layer with the following actionscript:
[Code]...
This runs contrary to my understanding of the pre-compiler and code execution order. In my way of thinking, any reference creation and related memory allocation is made when the object is instantiated, and indeed that allocation, unlike C depends not on code order (declaration before use), though this is an order that would satisfy even the C pre-compiler. If I understand the Flash compiler at all, it's not even a question of 'code order'... the symbol is pre-compiled such that for it to exist... for it to be instantiated, the variable would exist before the function would even be 'available' to be called internally or externally. Is my thinking way off, or is this a bug?

I've just imported a Flex component into my project.I have a theory question about importing.all the imports statements in the component source files started with "com.subFolder.etc", but I have preferred to move the component folders into "componentName" and to replace all import statements as "componentName.com.subFolder.etc"

This is with Flexbuilder 3.2, Eclipse 3.3.2.I am moving my development environment to a new machine. Actionscript classes that compiled in the old environment now get a compile error:
A file found in a source-path must have an externally visible definition. If a definition in the file is meant to be externally visible, please put the definition in a package.I do declare the package in these classes - I think failure to declare the package is the usual reason for this error.To add to the mystery, many classes in this project compile without errors.

How do I import a class that resides outside the root folder of a fla file?
From root I should go back two folders to get the classes I want, which by the way is TweenMax. I don't want to copy these classes to every website's folder.

Its stated in adobe site that the Flash Builder 4 compiler is indeed 25% more performing than the previous Flex Builder 3 compiler.
How can I confirm that?
For example if I make a simple application on Fx3 and the same on Fx4, then how would I compare the compiler performance using my project?

I have many flas with Document Classes associated to them. I have been using them successfully on both Mac and PC for over a year now. But just last week when ever I transfer the files to my Mac to work on them I get the error class not found on your classpath one will automatically be generated upon export.
Is there parts of the files that can become corrupted but continue to work on the PC? I have not changed anything in my classpath recently and some files have retained the link and some have not. I have tried transferring the files many ways now and even tested them on other macs and both macs have the same problem. I've emailed the files, used a flash drive, done interenet transfers (FTP) and I still have the same error. I can open the files fine too.

if a object already exists(not created dynamically) on the time-line how do i reference its instance name im loading the class like this
class is (Scene.as)
var Scene2:Sprite = new Scene()
and its extending Sprite
I've also tried extending movie clip and that didn't appear to help,
is the extend part what gives it the reference to the time-line of the script that initiated it, or was i way off?

I keep trying to get started with Papervision, but I must be entering the classpath incorrectly as I keep getting errors that the compiler cannot find the classes.Is there some kind of bug with setting the classpath on a mac?I checked out the papervision stuff so it sits in:
/Applications/Adobe Flash CS 5/Papervision/as3/trunk/src/
Inside the src folder is a folder called "org", which contains "papervision3d" and the folders of classes.To set the classpath, I've gone to Preferences, chosen ActionScript, clicked on the ActionScript 3.0 button at the bottom, clicked the plus sign, and then clicked on the little folder button to add a path to the Library box (the middle box). I browsed and selected:
/Applications/Adobe Flash CS 5/Papervision/as3/trunk/src/
I thought at this point (after quitting and restarting Flash) that if I created a class file that had, for example,
import org.papervision3d.cameras.*
that it would work -- but it doesn't. It only works if I save the .fla and .as files themselves in /Applications/Adobe Flash CS 5/Papervision/as3/trunk/src/, in the same folder as the "org" folder. And I guess this means that the path in the Preferences setting is useless.

The company I work for outsourced the development of a flash project which I have now taken over. We had a handover from the developer and all was working well. However, I have moved all files onto a new machine and now I get several errors when I compile. The project is set up as follows (this isn't all the folders):
mainFolder
mainFolder-in
mainFoldersrcfolderB
mainFoldersrccases
mainFoldersrccontainerMain.fla (and Main.as)
When I compile Main.fla (all fla's are set to compile to the bin folder) I get the error -
1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: PageEvent.
Which refers to this line in the class -
protected function pageEventHandler(e:PageEvent):void
PageEvent is a class that is found in the folderB directory - mainFoldersrcfolderBevents
It is imported into the Main class -
import folderB.events.PageEvent;
3 errors appear, all the same for the 3 times the var e:PageEvent is referenced.
It seems that the main.fla/.as cannot find PageEvent class.
Another example is this:
In the directory mainFoldersrccases is a class Case1.as/fla
this class extends CaseSpaceCore which is found here - folderB.pages.cases.spaces.CaseSpaceCore; and is imported into Case1.as
When I try to compile I get the error -
1017: The definition of base class CaseSpaceCore was not found.
and then other errors about overridden methods that is cant find because it cant find the base class.
I am using Flashdevelop (if that makes a difference) as did the developer. I have tried adding the class path in the project settings to srcfolderB but this made no difference.

Im having problems with classpaths. I have used them before with "import" but I'm not able to link a class directly to symbol in the library.
I have a class c:/myfolder/src/myclass.as . In prefernces > AS3 settings, I have c:/myfolder/ as default classpath. I click linkage on the symbol and enter src.myclass . When I click the checkmark, it says 'class not found'. I am able to do: *import src.myclass; and attach the class to an instance on th stage. That works fine, but thats not what I need to do.

I'm working on CS4 / Windows 7. I recently moved from XP where everything worked fine. My problem is that compiling any movie now takes about 40 seconds longer than before. I have been able to narrow down the issue to this. There is folder in my classpath which is on a local network. It is this folder that is causing the issue. Plus, even if this folder is not required at all to compile the movie it slows it down anyway. As soon as that folder is removed from my classpath everything works as it should -- of course, for movies which don't require that folder to compile :-) --. Having said that removing the folder or changing its location is not the solution I'm looking for.

If they get a question wrong in my quiz ( weakest link) the money clip goes to zero and it goes onto the next question. If they get it right the money clip advances and they go onto the next question. I want to include each time that it should only go onto the next question if all questions have been asked. SO i want an extra if clause in both sections, saying if current question is more than 11 go to '#game over"The questions are saved in the frame of the quiz
_root.qArray = new Array("question: A;B;C;D")
_root.qArray.push("Question?:A;B; C; D")
There are 11 questions.At the moment at the section with choosing answers I have
function selectAnswer(n) {
// correct
if (answers[n] == correctAnswer) {
_root.money.nextFrame();

Situation:
- We have a Flash application located on a SAP EP (let's say ep.x.com)
- We have a SAP ABAP Application (Webservices) on a SAP WebAS
server (abap.x.com)
- Clarification: This is not about Flash islands / but a normal Flash application communicating with WebAS ABAP via WebServices
Problem: Due to the changed security policy in Flash 10 this scenario does no longer work.
- A crossdomain policy file on root level cannot be deployed on root level
- The WebServices http/s headers cannot be modified, since the WebServices are generated by the WebAS IDE.
Comment: Technically there is a way to patch a WebAS ABAP,but this is not a practical / acceptable way in a normal SAP WebAS infrastructure.
Conclusion:- The above scenario (Flash from EP content / WebAS ABAP as backend) is a quite normal scenario in the SAP world.
- SAP / Adobe always features the close relationship between their technologies.
Question:- What could we do?
- How does the Visual Composer works around that problem?

I have a root stage, and a MC that is called from the root stage.Now from that MC, i will called in another MC2, and I wanted to placed the MC in the center of the stage. The reason I could not use normal ADDED_TO_STAGE at MC and define the center is because MC is not place in the exact position of the root stage (as in x, y=0). So if I would target MC2 at MC stage center, it would not be the exact center of the root stage/screen.How can I called the root stage properties rather than adding MC2 into the stage?

root.gotoAndStop(2);
this.gotoAndStop(1);
But I am getting 1061: Call to a possibly undefined method gotoAndStop through a reference with static type flash.display:Stage.

I am trying to use if and else statements and failing. I am either completely missing their purpose, or just not writing the correct code. Scenario: I have designed a gallery that consists of animation in movie clips that are placed on the time line. With the if/else statements I need Flash to know what movie clip the user is on, so that the users next action loads the correct movie clip.
