ActionScript 3.0 :: Define A Field Inside A Value Object With Limited Options

I have value object that one of its field is meant to be filled trough a dropdown chooser. I'm very new to flex so I'm not sure what is the best way to maintain this field.
Should I make it a simple string in the value object and a table in the DB, and each time I have the dropdown to send a request to read it from the DB? That what I would have done with JS but in flash I thinkl it might be better to somehow keep that information in the flex app instead of keep asking the server to send the names every time.
The field has about six options and it is choosing htat field happens a lot during work with the app.
I've got a dynamic text field in my button object. I have named the text field "myText". How can I modify the text within it? myButton.myText.text = "test"; won't work, because it can't access myText.
How can I define Movie Clip inside symbol from the library?e.g. if i have symbol of enemy and i want that enemy follow movie clip has instance name HERO_MC.and i have hundreds of enemies want to kill the HERO_MC after chasing and i don't want to write the code in main time line frame and add loops so i want to writing the code inside the symbol of enemy in library but the problem is i don't know how to define Movie Clip "HERO_MC" inside symbol of enemy!
Im building a program that queries a database for options and displays the options in a number of comboBoxes. The comboBoxes are dynamically built and loaded via code and added to the stage. I would like to build the comboBoxes into a single movie clip (maybe not the correct wording) so I can use options like tweening and such to make it look better. The code is below.
Basically, the problem I have is that I'd like to limit the predators to their own hunting environment, ie. Polar bear to ice, killer whale to sea so that the penguin has at least some chance of avoiding either predator. My initial idea was to define a boundary (apologies if this isn't the correct terminology) around the ice, thereby achieving what I'd like but I have no idea how to do this. Am I thinking about this too simplistically? Also, I would like the killer whale to retain its ability to swim under the icebergs. Note: As you can probably tell, the killer whale is on the lowest layer below the sea and then the ice is on a layer above the sea.
How can I define my own global function which will be accessible throughout the whole package or better, program? Alternatively, how can I define a singleton object? Should I use static?

I want to let the user save some bigger data in a shared object by choice. Is it possible to define the size the user needs to allow? I'ld like to set the minimum to at least 10 MB to have some extra space for future usage.
I intended to write a script that would create a dynamic guided character motion. The drawing API tut gave me an idea how to do it. I thought I'll write a script that would draw a line (or a curve) and would put it into guided motion layer. So I just wrote it by the tutorial and put it into guided motion layer. Yeah, that was naive.So how do you define where (layer) the script would draw curve/line? How do you define the layer in which the new object would be crated?

And Object(this).play() or checking for current frame doesn't work, nor tracing a value define outside the function. How shall I reffer to the movieclip that events is called from?
I'm trying to setup a DataGrid that contains a column of combo boxes. The values of the combo boxes are defined by data specific to that row. I cannot get this to work though, I'm asking for a solution to this, either fixing what I have below or a recommendation on a different way.One of the columns of my DataGrid has an object derived from a ComboBox for an ItemEditor. Is it possible to just create a .AS file and define constants inside of that file? Without making a new class, just so that all my classes can access these constants? This is of course possible in PHP, but are the scopes handled differently in AS3?
I have a bit of a problem because i'm new to as3 and want to create a field around the object in which it could later on notice things. Things inside this field are seen and those outside not.
I am developing an application with Flex for the GUI and Restlet for the webservices. I have a strange problem. I put my XML as a property on a generic object, and send it as part of a POST request. But in the Restlet webservice, this XML is irretrievable. How do I retrieve it? I tried initialising the received Representation object to a DomRepresentation, but thats not working. If I put the received Representation object into a Form object, then getFirstValue is returning that XML as a string! I noticed that the contentType of the HTTPService was application/www-form-encoded so I set it to application/xml and its not helping either. Im creating a website for a client who wants to be able to update it themselves and so i'm using AS3 to create a textfield which calls text from a txt file to display and uses the UIScrollbar to scroll the area. What i'm wondering is, is it possible to load images into this same textfield so they are easily added and updated (like the text is) and so they scroll with the text as if it were all one part?
Is it possible to create a search button inside of a "button" symbol? aaaaaaand have it only appear on the "over" state of the button?
What I want to do is have an image and then when the mouse hovers over it, it reveals (over the image) a search field where you can then enter information and search. I don't want the search box to be revealed when the mouse isn't hovering over it. I've tried alpha, everything.
ok so if i have an obect called square1 and an object called square2 and inside square2 i have hitArea... i want to use shapeflag to detect an absolute true hitTest on just the area of square1 not the bounding box.... i tried this code and it didnt work...

I've got an xml file that is providing text to the swf. The flash file is supposed to go through the xml file and each time it reads a node it is supposed to create a text field on the stage with the text from the XML file. Then it is supposed to animate along the y axis for a short time, pause for a few seconds, and then continue animating along the y axis. (like a news ticker on a News Channel). Anyways, I've got the FLA reading the XML file fine and it even creates a text field populated with the text. But I can't get the text fields to animate inside the loop.[code]I can get the first text to animate. But I don't understand why the "i and j" version doesn't.
I am trying to enter a student name into a textfield (student1_txt). I just can't seem to work out the correct syntax. The student numbers and names are in an array. I have the fields working fine outside of the movie clip but not inside.

how to make a label appear inside a input text field. As of now I am just using a static text field to the left of the input field, bt due to lack of space I would like the text field name to appear inside the actual input text field and when the user clicks to insert their text the title or label for that input field dissapears.
