ActionScript 3.0 :: Globally Mute Audio From Javascript?
Oct 19, 2010
I just started developing flash recently and I need to globally mute the audio in an swf by javascript ... I've got the following functions in my AS3 already.
Code:
function mute():void
{
var st:SoundTransform = new SoundTransform(0);
SoundMixer.soundTransform = st;
[code]...
Do I need to use addCallback() somehow to trigger this through javascript?

I've been given a avi file that I've turned into an flv and now need to create two versions of that flv, one with all the audio and one with a small section of the audio removed (its narrated and we need to remove the mentioning of a specific item).
I know I can import an flv into the flash timeline but am not sure how to kill the sound for a given portion of frames,
Was considering redoing the flv as two separate flv's, one with video and one with audio and then putting them into the timeline and cutting the audio up, but I would love a cleaner way, preferably with ActionScript

I call it a hiccup because the code works; but it's backwards. When I hit the audio button it plays the music and when I hit it again it stops the music. I wish for the music to play automatically when you enter the SWF and then you hit the button to mute the music if you wish; and then hit the button again to play the music again.
Here is the code I have:
toggleButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, rolloverToggle);
toggleButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, rolloutToggle);
toggleButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, toggleClick);
toggleButton.buttonState = "On";
var song:Sound = new TitleMusic();

I'm creating a mute button for an audio player that I pieced together, and it seems to be working alright except when I advance to a new track. If the volume is NOT muted and I click a new track it's fine, but if the volume is muted (i.e. at "0") and click a new track it remains at 0 and won't un-mute when I click the button.. though if I click the button to un-mute it and then select a new track it's fine, so I think there's something in my playSong() function that's interfering, I just can't tell what it is.
Code:
stop();
Player Variables
volume = 100;
current_song = 1;

Is there any way to mute other flash objects on the same page with ActionScript or Javascript? I can understand if this would be a security issue but my flash does have a user-initiated mode which takes over the screen and I was hoping this might be an exception where it's clear it has full priority for the user.

I've downloaded the the Flash mp3 Player. I did some minor modifications to it and it works well. The only problem I have is that when the mute button is pressed, the current song is mute(s.setVolume(0)), but when the next song comes up, the mute button is not in mute state(Volume not set to 0). I want to keep the mute state unchanged when the songs are playing untill the mute button is pressed again.

I am interested in streaming audio on my website, but I have no clue where to begin. There are two types of streaming I hope to achieve. The first would be streaming a playlist of songs stored on the server and the second would be live audio streaming. Can anybody recomend any good sites or plugins to use?

I've made a website, to test the html5 audio. Unfortunately some browser doesn't support it. How to use a flash backend? I haven't found anything useable. The flash backend examples on the web use the DOM element, not the new Audio(). I don't want to use JQuery for this little experiment.
My code:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>

This problem is happening is both IE8 and IE7. I have a small swf compiled with flex. It's basically just a wrapper around audio streaming functionality. All the controls and such are in html with javascript. I load the swf using swfobject's "static" method. This works great in Firefox and Chrome. In IE, the swf loads correctly, but as soon as I try to stream any audio with it, I get an error. EDIT: I've reduced the code quite a bit to try and find the problem. You can see the new version running here. Here is the error, html and flex files for my reduced version:

I'm looking to start learning a scripting language for web audio and sound development. It needs to be able to handle simultaneous audio events, eg; to trigger a sound when another is playing (I'm not sure if and how this is possible, but have witnessed this kind of presentation: [URL] (can this kind of thing be done with JavaScipt?, this looks like AS / Flash)).
From what I can tell the choice appears to be between JavaScript (JS) and ActionScript (JS), with details as follows: - If going the JS route (look into JS and HTML(5) audio capability) Learn about the basics of HTML and CSS, and then start to look into JavaScript, Ajax, and JQurey (library / framework for JavaScript). If going the AS route Will not need to know as much about HTML and CSS. AS is the language behind Flash. Not supported on the i-phone(?) I know Java to around an intermmediate level.

Are there any other free players like that?

In an ideal world, I could do this through a browser in real-time and send a notification that would include the DOM information needed to remove the ad. In this type of model, I could theoretically then use all clients (web visitors) as test subjects. I believe that this might be far fetched, and thus will need to rely on a smaller subset of users. I'm looking for any way to do this. I have even thought about using speakers and a microphone to detect when a sound is playing, and then some how capture a screenshot and the DOM information.

This isn't another one of those "How can I record audio in the browser?" questions... I know that the HTML5 Stream API is around the corner and Flash can already access the user's microphone and camera. I'm simply wondering, as a Javascript developer with little knowledge of Flash, if anyone has developed a JS library that hooks into Flash's device capabilities for recording but sends the results back to javascript (presumably using ExternalInterface).
In other words... libraries like SoundManager2 utilize a Flash fallback for audio playback, but they don't seem to allow for recording. Has anyone written a JS library that uses an invisible Flash movie to allow audio recording?

I am trying to capture the microphone and send the recording to my server.. I tried this method here but it records only a big WAV and the upload can be slow sometimes. Is there a way to capture the voice and compress it on the client side? Best method would be to send the recording while recording, but I have no Idea if this is possible. (It works for YouTube Live Webcam recording, it must work for Audio only too..)

I'm able to record sound with a Flash application embedded in my website, this audio is saved to a ByteArray, which I need to pass to Javascript in order to post to my server along with other required data.
I know I can use AS3 ExternalInterface class to communicate with Flash from Javascript, but what would be the appropriate format or variable type in javascript to hold the ByteArray, and how can I ensure that I won't lose much audio data when doing so?

I've got a flash player (using JWPlayer) that plays an audio file. The file plays fine. How do I provide the embed code for end-users to copy, so they can post the player and play the audio file on their own site directly? Should I be using HTML <pre> tags somewhere? Or JavaScript to generate the embed code / link?

I have a flash project that involves using glow filters on several mcs all over the site, the problem is, the current way I'm doing it requires me to declare and assign the filter on every MC's container.
Is there a way where I can just declare the glow filter once on the maintime line, and then simply apply the filter on the MCs where needed?
this is what I use for every MC, and it's really tedious and hard to keep track of/change.
Code:
var Glow1:GlowFilter = new GlowFilter();
Glow1.color = 0xFFFFFF;
Glow1.inner = false;

For examples sake, say I have an 'Icon' class. When you set Icon's 'name' variable, it downloads the image (of the given name) from a server/directory.
The problem however, is that even though the name (of the image) is provided, the name of the server, or even the folder containing the image is not.
Of course, I could explicitly define the full name and location of the file to the class, but if I ever decide to change folder structure I would have to go through and find all references to the folder and change it. It also seems wrong to litter all of my parent classes with arbitrary URL's to feed to the Icon class.
The preference of course would be to 'globally request' the image server/directory on instantiation, but in the world of OOP how is this best achieved?
I was just about to have the Icon class dispatch a bubbling event, letting something at the end of the displayList catch the event/request and feed it the information (a String) it was looking for, but it didn't feel right. It feels like dispatchEvent should only be used to Dispatch Events, not request a string...
Also, I've come up to similar situations where I've needed a similar request structure without being an extension of EventDispatcher (such as just a primitive Object). Is there a best practice for both?
