I would like your advices on how to handle loading errors which is dependent on network or maybe timeouts from server. I have a game hosted on a dedicated server but it seems that some users from different locations are experiencing loading errors. Is there anyway we can detect a timed-out loading? How should one handle loading errors for an online game in general depending on network connection? For example, loading of game assets etc.
I have a winForm panel that has a flash ative x control embedded in it. This works pretty well.I load the form, add the flash control to the form, then load the .swf file that I wish to play. However, I have a few issues. There is a button in the swf file that is loaded that is marked with an 'x' to denot that it should close the flash plugin. When this button is clicked it pops an internet explorer window and then shows an error dialog box that says: "Internet Explorer cannot download . Unspecified error"There is also a 'Continue' button in the flash movie that shows when the movie is over, and it produces the same behavior when the button is clicked.
For this project we are trying to aviod the usage of the WebBrowser control to host the flash video.Does anyone have any solutions that would allow the application to handle a call that opens a new internet explorer window?EDIT: I have found more details as to what specifically the issue is. The flash file (.swf) has an embedded call to IE:javascript:window.close()This particular call is causing the IE window to pop and then fail. We do not have the ability to change the flash file, is there anyway to handle this call from the windows form and stop it from happening?
I have a tilelist component using a custom ImageCell based item renderer. I know that at times some of the images it is trying to retrieve will not be found and I am able to handle this via an IEOrror listener on the custom ImageCell loader. However, if I set the data provider, then it is changed before all images have completed their loading or error process, the flash debug player throws up an unhandled #2044 error in firefox stating that an image could not be found. In opera with the debug player it throws a #2044 stating that a load never completed.I can't find a way to trap and ignore these errors so they don't throw the debugger player dialogue up. Also, when using the Flash Builder IDE to debug, the debugger doesn't break on these errors at all - it's only in the player while I'm able to break on other errors without problem. It is as if the error listener is being disposed of when the dataprovider changes, but the loader continues and throws an unhandled #2044.
Am making an xml-driven boardgame and was wondering if there is an established methodology for handling fairly large amounts of xml? I'm pretty familiar with working with small amounts of xml and have my loader class in place, etc. However, I'm unsure as how best to handle the sequencing of loading in several xml files, where to store the data once it is loaded and then cascade it down to the various classes which will use the data.
I'm coding a website in pure AS3 using FlashDevelop and have an object that loads an XML file on init. Is there a good way to make my main function wait until it has finished loading? I know about onComplete events and how to use them internally in the object but I'm not sure how to proceed.
How do I handle php gibberish when loading url-encoded variables? If either vars or no vars return I have a way of executing an event, but if html/php errors return in the string, how can I tell the program to execute an event?
I'm creating a scrollbar gallery from a tutorial on this site. Though I've completed the tutorial, and customised the gallery to my own needs, however I'm trying to make a very small change to it - and no matter what I do, keep running into problems. I'm trying to replace the rectangular handle with my own customised handle - a (20 x 20) 'circular' png image that I've imported into Flash, made a graphic and stored in the library (though I understand it can be imported using actionscript, like the other images in the gallery).
We are making a system that has a main swf for the application, and loads separate tools from separate swfs -- there will be versioning issues in the future since the separate swfs are coming from a cms (especially now since we're still developing, but also in the future when other developers might create an incompatible tool). I'm trying hard to prevent them as much as possible but I'd really like to be able to display a message to the user of the system when an incompatible swf is loaded.
This would mean that we need to catch that VerifyError or at least determine the loading failed for some reason - I've got no idea how to handle that at the moment. I suspect it might be possible using 10.1 and the uncaughtError system, but we are currently targeting flash player 10. Does anyone have a good idea? (we are already handling IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR)
UPDATE: I've built a solution that scans the bytecode before importing, looks like that will work. I'll post the solution later.
I created a flash movie that has some words breaking a piece of glass. I have the effect working well but I wanted to add sound. I created the following sound class to play mp3 files:
I am busy with a big project, for a brief outline, its an induction program kind of like a media rich slideshow done in flash (AS3). It consists of 10 chapters / modules, each module is a SWF with its own class file. Each module loads external and embedded videos and also mp3 sound voice overs at run time.
Each module loads and works fine by itself, but now the problem comes in where I am trying to create a main container swf to load and unload each of the other 10 module swfs, sequentially (ie first load module 1 swf, then when module 1 swf is finished, unload it and load module 2 swf etc)
I have researched for days and realize that when loading external swfs that have their own class files, problems arise because the external swf makes references to stage but it does not have access to the stage yet and I need to use something like this.addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, whateverFunction) in the constructor of the external file, and "... the loaded content must be on the Display List BEFORE any code in it referencing 'stage' is executed. " as quoted from Barbara Kaskosz's experiment on flashandmath.com. (I cant post links as I am under the 50 post restriction).
After trying for days with this and other guides I found, I still have not been able to successfully apply it to my projects files. If anyone would be willing to take the time for me to send them some sample files maybe my container FLA and two of the smallest modules and have a look at what I've done
My deadline is approaching fast and failing this deployment phase of combining all the swfs into one executable is like tripping at the finish line.
I am posting a link to my simplified and cut down files (for testing purposes) in hopes that someone may assist me. I also want an event to fire on the last frame of each of the modules, and for the main.swf to listen for it so it can unload the current module and load the next module.
dispatchEvent(new Event("loadNextModule", true)); //I think this should go on the last frame of the last slide of each module, //then in main.as add a listener addEventListener("loadNextModule", nextModule);
But would this listen for the event firing in an external swf?
I have deleted a lot of content in the modules to help with testing purposes, and simplified and made them only 3 slides each.
TL;DR : I have a container swf with a single movieclip that will contain external swfs that will load one at a time. Each swf works fine by itself, but I get errors when compiling the container swf because (I assume via research) the container swf AND EACH external swf has its OWN class file. In summary, I need the main swf to start by loading module1.swf, then when the user reaches the last slide of module 1, main.swf needs to unload module1.swf completely and then load module2.swf. You can traverse slides by pressing the 'right' and 'left' keys on the keyboard.
This is the error I am getting when compiling main.fla :
TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter child must be non-null. at flash.display: DisplayObjectContainer/addChild() at main/loadFirstModule() at main()
I am attaching what code files I can given the restrictions, if you still require the two external .fla files
I've searched for a good while but I can't seem to find an answer to this question: How to catch all errors of an external SWF file when it's loaded? The story: I'm building a flash app that would upload and then load any user-create SWF file and display it if it doesn't throw errors. I've tried to use try/catch statement but it doesn't seem to catch internal errors of the loaded SWF.Code (a chopped version):

[code]Whenever im preloading images, i get a NaN Error everytime. Sometimes all i see is a NaN error, not even load numbers like 89% or so. I got the swf online at url...If you go to any section in the designs menu (3d design, 2d design or webdesign) and click a image you get the script that gives the NaN.I only get NaN in Firefox, Internet Explorer just gives 0. But either way i would like to see percentages rather than 0 or NaN.
I have a project where I need to have a video clip play as soon as the SWF starts, and once it's done, the video stops at the end and a prompt to continue appears to transition into another video.I just need to figure out how to handle the video parts of this project, and I need to do this without showing any playback controls on the screan.
I am developing a video player using the OSMF library. I have the problem that I sometimes lose the connection to the server. So I set up an object that watches the connection to the server and in case of connection lost it tries a limited number of times to reconnect before giving up. Everything works just fine except for the message that I get on the debugger version of the player which states:[code]But I still get the error. The onNetStatus method gets events like NETSTREAM_BUFFER_EMPTY, NETSTREAM_BUFFER_FULL or NETSTREAM_PLAY_START but not NETSTREAM_PLAY_STREAMNOTFOUND.
I have child movie in a project that contains a FLV Playback instance with an associated Seek Bar component. The child movie fades in and fades out when a button is pressed. When a the child movie fades-out, the handle of the seek bar is retained. If I watch the movie multiple times, multiple seek bar handles remain behind.

A gentleman doing the sound track for the video I want to do on Flash has asked me what audio files Flash will handle? I have looked at Adobe and Macromedia and many other Flash websites and, of course, Flash itself, and cannot find any enumeration of what video files Flash handles, much less any mention of what audio files.
I am trying to create a Flash based website that runs full screen. It will have a series of still photos or possibly, a video as a background with a few menu buttons on top of them. What I don't understand is how to compensate for the various monitor aspect ratios. If I make it wide screen, a square monitor will show blank bars at the top and bottom. You can see an example of what I'm trying to do at [URL] Also, what is the optimal size to make the Flash video? I am running Flash MX 2004 (Version 7)
I have a request to create a "flash-like" app that is connected to a MS Access Database (DB). The customer has built up a product configurator in Access and wants to know if I can do anything with it. Is this what Flex is good for? I still really do not understand what Flex is all about.
Anyway, I thought of exporting the DB out to an XML file and importing that to a flash app and then using the data there. The problem with that is that I would have to recreate all of the logic (e.g. if you choose "model A" you can only choose "colors 1, 2, or 3") that manipulates the elements in the DB and also the client would not be able to easily manipulate/edit/update the DB without having to export it to XML, etc...What would be a smart way for me to access/manipulate a MS Access Database through a flash front end?
I'm running a recursive function which in the worst case senario is of factorial order. (i.e: runs itself n! times)As soon as n exceeds 7 in these worst case senario's the function times out (Error #1502). I want to handle this error event so that the user can be presented with an error that the problem is too complex.I don't want to extend the timeout period as 15 seconds is reasonable.
I have some XML. The apostrophe and dashes don't display. Is there a way to handle it without resorting to & ? It is the dash right after the underlined title. For the apostrophe, I went ahead and used ITSD's (for ITSD's). Just wondering if I have to that with every special character.
[Code]...
The display in the TextArea Component puts a little box in places where the dash and apostrophe are.
I'm developing an AIR application with Flash Builder 4 Beta 2 (nightly SDK) an am not using a framework like mate. I have a couple of views and components in my application. An outline might look like this:
I have a Flex login page that uses HTTPService to communicate with server side php script. Once user's credential is verified, a session will be created and the login page will redirect to the main Flex page with that session info. I'm not sure how to implement the session logic.
In my AS2 Flash game, I play a number of sound files and wait for the "onSoundComplete" message/function before proceeding. The problem is if there is no sound card in the system (or it is disabled in device manager) - everything acts like it is working (no errors, onLoad handler gets "true") - but the sound never actually gets played, and as such, my event never gets triggered.I had planned on dealing with this by hooking into my sound code, and if I detect no sound card, just kick off a timer to wait a few seconds before manually firing the "onSoundComplete" function. The only problem is that I can't reliably find a way to determine if there is a sound card in the system! AS3 seems to handle this quite nicely by passing back a NULL soundchannel - unfortunately I am stuck in AS2.0
I have an asp page that loads a response " user=exists " everytime I try to update a database record (when of course the record already exists!) How can I handle this response with AS3 in Flash?
I'm writing what is essentially a browser in Adobe AIR (ActionScript, not AJAX). A great bit of functionality to implement would be protocol handling. iTunes, for instance, handles itms protocols; when your friend sends you a link beginning with "itms://", it's going to launch iTunes as long as it's installed. Is there a way to write an AIR app (requiring AIR 2 would be fine) that can be the "handler" for a protocol in this way?
I have a Flex application with three different views. Only one view is shown at a time, and the choice of view depends on what part of the application the user is working with. If it had been an ordinary HTML webapp I would have created three different HTML-templates/pages for each view.
What is the recommended way to handle such application views in Flex?
