ActionScript 3.0 :: Loader Won't Dispatch Events?
Mar 2, 2009
I have a loader loading a JPG (which works) but it will not fire any event, neither Event.COMPLETE nor ProgressEvent.PROGRESS - it looks like:
Code:
var url:URLRequest = new URLRequest('klein.jpg');
var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
ldr.load(url);
[Code]....

I have two separate advancedDataGrid instances (let's call them A and B). What I'd like to do: when clicking on grid A. I'd like:
for grid A to handle the click normally (i.e. default advancedDataGrid behavior)
for grid B to receive a click event a certain location and handle such event using advancedDataGrid default behavior (i.e. without having to write a handler for such click).
I've managed to dispatchEvent a MouseEvent.CLICK to grid B and to handle such event by creating an event listener, but really I'd like for grid B to handle the event on its own (i.e. without having to re-rewrite a handler), and that doesn't seem to be the case. Is MouseEvent.CLICK even the right event?

I just want to dispatch that custom event named "myEvent" but it doesn't work. How can I do? I don't want to use flash events. I want to use mine.

I'm still trying to get my head around the best way to structure event flows. Someone made a lot of sense by telling me that contained objects should be decoupled from their parent containers so they're reusable between containers. Instead of calling their parent's function, they dispatch an event. Sensible! I recently myself in the awkward-feeling situation of dispatching an event on a contained object, from its parent. It seems more intuitive for an object to be the one dispatching its own events. Maybe I'm bordering on breaking the Law of Demeter? Example of what I'm doing: child.dispatchEvent(new ChildEvent(ChildEvent.IM_BEING_A_CHILD)); Am I correct in feeling strange here, or is it a normal thing for one object to dispatch another object's events?

So, events bubble up the display list. That's great if that's what you want. But what if you have objects on the stage that are not related that need to listen for events from each other? A simplified example:
var objA = new ObjA;
addChild(objA);
var objB = new ObjB;
[Code]....
Object B can listen for events dispatched by object C. But I also need object A to listen for events dispatched by object C. Also, these objects are created in different classes so I can't hard code references to each other.

I have an <mx:Application> which contains a <mx:Module>. This module has several child modules. It also has some an instance of a class I have created. I am trying to have a method of this class dispatch an event that can be "heard" by the module and handled. This isn't happening.To be more clear, I am using 'dispatchEvent' to from inside a class method.There is an instance of this class in: mx.core.Application.myapplication.mymodule.myclassIt is the 'myclass.somefunction' that dispatches the event. I have a listener registered in 'mymodule'. Nothing happens when the function/method runs, however.

It seems more efficient to store events on the dispatcher if they're never going to change. Isn't creating them costly? Is there some kind of information I'm losing if I dispatch an already-stored event?

I've a Flex application which loads a Flash swf via SWF loader; the Flash swf is in AS3. the flash swf has code to dispatchEvent a Text Event
Flash Code:
var re:TextEvent = new TextEvent(TextEvent.TEXT_INPUT,true,true);
Flex Code:
<mx:SWFLoader source="menu.swf" id="mnu" complete="menuLoaded(event)" />
private var mySwfMve:MovieClip;
function menuLoaded(event:Event): void {
[Code]....
I don't see any TextEvents being dispatched from Flash. They are not seen in the debug trace.. I can capture enter frame events however.

I stumbled upon and interesting problem concerning spark's VideoDisplay-Component. It seems that it doesn't dispatch DoubleClick-Events. For better understanding look at the following code:

The Click-Event works for both components. But the DoubleClick-Event is only handled by the Panel-Component.

I noticed that the Object.watch and Object.unwatch methods are gone in actionscript 3.
I've tried to find alternatives but the event system doesn't dispatch events when properties change, There is a data binding system but I think that's just for Flex.
Does anyone know what (if any) the alternative is?

Imagine you have a MC used as a container for several other MC's used as buttons.Now, should I use the class of the container to listen for and to dispatch events. OrShould I create a seperate class for each MC inside of the container to listen for and to dispatch events.
In summary: One class for all, or several smaller classes dedicated to their respective MC.How far should one go with abstraction?.

This simple code:
var loa:Loader = new Loader();
loa.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, onLoaderInit);
loa.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoaderComplete);
loa.loadBytes(someByteArray);
Sometimes works, but mostly doesn't. Neither 'onLoaderInit' nor 'onLoaderComplete' fire.
'someByteArray' is always a valid ByteArray, stored in a local SharedObject

I'm creating a custom class to retrieve some data using URLoader.My code is below, doing this from memory, plz ignore any minor typos.The challenge I'm encountering: when my custom class calls the loader, the event handler takes over. At which point the context of my code leaves the function and it's not clear to me how I then return the data retrieved by the loader. I sense that I'm breaking the rules of how ActionScript really runs by putting a loader in a separate class; at least, that's my primitive understanding based upon the reading I've done on this.So can I do this? I am trying to create a clean separation of concerns in my program so that my main program doesn't get clogged up with code concerned with retrieving remote data.

Just wanted to ask if there is any advantage for either using mouse click event or touch tap events, when writing apps for mobiles or tablets (for the iphone especially)?
I know that both of them should work fine, but in term of performance, is anyone better? Are there any things I should be aware of when choosing either?
By the way am using actionscript3 to implement the app.

I have an animation that I want to start when clicking on the flash window. However, I've also have some buttons on the stage. If I add an event listener for MouseEvent.CLICK on the stage, then it 'eats up' the events and the buttons don't work.
I've tried some tricks, by adding some invisible buttons on top of the real ones, and use the MOUSE_OVER event to selectively enable/disable the mouseEnabled flag for the stage, but didn't work because it complains that the property or method doesn't exist (which I find odd).

I have two swf files, each one almost with the same classes, the most important one is a Singleton class, each swf does "singleton.getInstance()". The diference is that one swf is like a container and the other one is like a module. So when the container loads the module from an absolute path like loader.load("file://c:/modules/module.swf") or loader.load("[URL]"), two different singletons (same class) are created
But when the container loads from a relative path like loader.load("module.swf") , just one singleton is created (that is what I want) I am just intrigued with this behavior, could someone explain me this? PD: I believe is something related to loaderContext and applicationDomain but It also appears that isn't working right. -Patricio Foieri , Vertigo Labs

The title describes the problem: Loader.load() is firing the INIT event, but in my listener it's reporting loader.content as null. The description for INIT event is "Dispatched by the associated LoaderInfo object when the properties and methods of the loaded SWF file are accessible."I'm loading a lot of JPG images, and 95 percent of the time it works fine; the init listener fires and reports valid loader. content.I absolutely need loader.content available because I need to set the bitmap smoothing property to true.I've tried using Event.COMPLETE and it has the exact same problematic behavior.

I'm feeling a bit low now as I have been suffering this for months. A simple loader loads my simple game and runs VERY FAST on even slow pcs BUT when I build this other loader, it goes quite slowly and I don't know where the app is going wrong. WHERE is the processing consumptoin coming from out of my app.

I have the following code which simply loads an external swf, puts it in the right place and should all be hunky dory.This works:
Code:
var myLoader:Loader = new Loader();
addChild(myLoader);
var url:URLRequest=new URLRequest("foobar.swf");[code].....
to set the dimensions of the loader so the external swf doesn't 'spill over', the result is a blank screen. No matter how high I set those dimensions it just doesn't display anything.

I got this very strange behavior from FlashPlayer debugger 10.1 r82. When I call loader.load method, no ADDED event is dispatched to the loader object. But if I open the file and call loader.loadBytes instead, an ADDED event is dispatched to the loader object. I suspect the ADDED event is dispatched because the content is being set as the child of Loader object, but why in the other case it is not dispatched?

the file loads correctly but the loading screen only flashes up at the end.The only thing being exported in frame 1 is the loader image, and that is extremely small.Is it possible that there's a queue of things being loaded and the loader image is at the bottom of that queue? Since that was one of the last things added to the project

i have a main loader swf file called loader.swf and it loads an RSL.swf (runtime shared library for my swf files) and then 10 swf files, each one to a container (fE.: movieclip '01' in loader.swf, then movieclip '02' and so on). the 10 swf files have a lot of references to RSL.swf, and i have to use RSL.the problem is when loader.swf loads the RSL and the other 10 swfs the loader throws errors like this:
Code:
*** Security Sandbox Violation ***[code]...
then i put in EVERY swf files (loader,RSL and the other 10) the code Security.allowDomain ("*") but throws the same errors...

I'm loading some images with Loaders, cloning the BitmapData to a new Bitmap, and adding the Bitmap as a child of a Sprite. So far, so good. I want the Loaders I'm using to be removed by garbage collection, which they seem to be. The problem, or so it seems, is that when the Loaders are cleaned up, the Bitmaps I'm creating lose their data.
Edit: All this is happening when a class is instanced, and many copies of this class are being used as actors in a game. As the Actors are being created the older ones are losing their BitmapData to garbage cleanup. When all of them are finally loaded, only the last few are visible. I've rewritten my posted code as a class. If I prevent the Loaders from being cleaned up by somehow keeping a reference to them, the Bitmaps don't lose the data, but I don't want these Loaders hanging around.

I have noticed that using the "addEventListener" and coming back into a frame, I get multiple events tied to the same component.The design I am using jumps to an "I" frame (intermediate) and then back to the "M" frame (main) when the user performs an action.I add event listeners to several components when I enter that M frame. What I notice is that the events seem to stack up for a particular component.
For instance, if I enter M frame, N number of times and addEventListener("click", handleEvent) to a radio button, I get N calls to handleEvent when the user clicks on the radio button. I guess this kinda makes sense but is not what I want. I just want one event of a particular type (in this case "click") to be associated with the a particular component. I get around this issue by removing the event(s) in the I frame. Then they get reinstalled in the M frame. Only one at a time.
So, just wondering about this behaviour. Is there a way to check for the number of events that are currently active on a particular component? Better way to handle adding events?

I am designing a music player using JavaScript (jQuery) and HTML5, with Flash AS3 to fall back. Basically what I want to do is to be able to click HTML control elements and have them interact with the flash in order to play/pause and skip tracks in the playlist (playlist JSON file read by JavaScript, passes file ID to AS3, AS3 reads another JSON file to get URL, then plays audio)
This enables me to only use the Flash to play the audio, thus creating the same user experience regardless of HTML5 browser support. I'm assuming I will have to 'listen' for events in AS3, however any pointers in how to engage these events in JS and react to the events in AS3
