ActionScript 3.0 :: MOUSE_OVER Listener Added In MyButton Class?
Jun 24, 2009
I am wondering if there is a better way to add MOUSE_OVER/MOUSE_OUT listeners to a whole host of objects in my project.
The example is that I am loading in lots of thumbnails for a portfolio viewer. Each thumbnail is an instance of ThumbnailUI Class. Inside ThumbnailUI, I have added both MOUSE_OVER and MOUSE_OUT event listeners. This means that when all of the thumbnail instances are added, I have lots of listeners active at one time. Is this OK? Is there a better way to achieve mouse events on all of these thumbnails?

I have a movie clip I am using as a button (instance name btn1) and I added an event listener to it (using the following line): btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, animate1); the function "animate1" triggers some small animation when the mouse is over the movieclip. my problem is that the animation is triggered both on mouse over and mouse out events.

so I need to know if there is a way to understand if an Object has listener added to it. I mean:
myObj.addEventListener(event.ENTER_FRAME, handler);
listenerList:Array(?) = myObj.function_I_need();

I never ADDED the corresponding event listener. Why doesn't Flash complain that I'm trying to remove something I never added?

I'll present my problem in a few steps:
- I have a constructor method which is trigerred automatically once the program starts
- The method's argument determines whether or not an enter frame event is to be added(move:Boolean = true)
- If true, add the event listener
- there are getters and setters created to access the variables from another class
The problem is that the event listener is run only once - at the initial phase, so it checks the move's value just once (true - add, false - don't add), so it can be turned on and off only in this class. I want to allow a user to change its value from an external class, which is impossible even with getters and setters, because it adds the listener before the user even gets a chance to change it. I want the listener to be added only if the user wants it to. I know it looks complicated,

My problem is basically as follows. There is an instance of a class extending EventDispatcher. Everything goes well when I add event listener to the object like this:
[Code]...
Now someFunction is not called even though the line containing dispatchEvent('eventName') is being executed just like before (and there is an external reference to myObject as well). The application I'm developing is quite complex so, unfortunately, I can't post the exact code.

What is the correct event listener to detect a child added to the stage? I tried:
[Code]...
which doesn't work. I also tried ADDED_TO_STAGE but that doesn't fire it either. Do you know the correct way to detect when the child is added? Perhaps I should be attaching the listener to the parent instead?

I'm having trouble getting the Video class to work.. Everything works fine until I try to add an on enter frame event listener to the movie. I basically want to overlay an effect that gets updated every frame but adding the event listener causes the movie to freeze before it loads or on the first frame or just shortly after starting play back.. Check out the source code at [URL]
It freezes even if the enter frame method body is commented out so I don't think it's because of extra overhead..

I m using a dynamic text field in my app. I have added one Event.Change Listener on it. When I type into it with the keyboard, the event triggers. But when i set some text in it when user performs some action, like textfieldName.text = "test" then the event does not triggers. In this type of situation where we are not using keyboard, which listener should be added to text field to trigger the change event?

I've tried to write my own button based on MovieClip. So I created a new MovieClip called MyButton. It has 3 main frames (or clue frames or... I don't know how it's called in English): the first is for button's upState, the last two are the start and the end of press animation (I need a long animation - not just one frame). All the frames are empty. Then I created a class MyButton.as:

I've done a class to be able to listen to the event for a CLASS not on an instance.
Code:
class net.webbymx.events.XClassEventListener {[code]....
why did I do this.It cames with my rugby game.I have player in two teams. When a player throw the ball I want the other teammate to act like "wait for ball" and the opponent like "seek for ball". Plus I'm lazy (and I don't want to register the listener for each instance of the player I'm creating). So this class is made to be able to handle as many instance of a class I want without adding a listener on each of them. I'm just creating a global listener on the class and then I will be able to receive dispatched event for any instance of this class .so in my team I can do
Code:
XClassListener.initialize(this);
this.addEventListener("throw", "net.webbymx.game.Player", "wait");
and in my opponent team I can do
Code:
XClassListener.initialize(this);
this.addEventListener("throw", "net.webbymx.game.Player", "seek");

I have a document class called Main.as In the class constructor I have the following listener:
enter code here
var listeningFORModeChangeToStudent:Sprite = new Sprite;
listeningFORModeChangeToStudent.addEventListener(TellAllModeChangeToStudent.STUDENT,exp);
addChild(listeningFORModeChangeToStudent);
[code]....
In a third class I make a call to the despatcher in the previous class:
enter code here
var ThisTellAllModeChangeToStudent:TellAllModeChangeToStudent = new TellAllModeChangeToStudent;
ThisTellAllModeChangeToStudent.tellAllModeChangeToStudent();
I have trace statements in eveything and from this I know the despatcher in TellAllModeChangeToStudent is being called.The problem is that the listener in the main.as is not calling the function exp.I cant see why and I dont know how to check if the listener is actually seeing the dispatch event?

What I want to do is this: In my main movie I have 2 variables: movietoplay and tag I want an swf to be loaded into a movieclip(content) when myButton is pushed. This swf contains a variable, called tag1(var tag1 = "guitar"). Then if its loaded, tag and tag1 should be compared, and if they're the same, nothing should happen. But if they are not, another movie must be loaded elsewhere. Basically, I've collected links that belong with the different pages that load into 'content' and those groups should be loaded into the 'links' movieclip. But sometimes, the links for 2 different pages are the same. So I want to check if the links of the page that will come are the same links of the previous page and if they are the same, no new links need to be loaded. But if they're not the same, the new set of links should be loaded. (A set of links always ends with"_link.swf")

I have a class called shapeC that only creates a rectangle and then addChild(rectangle);. That class is instantiated on the main timeline. Currently, the only way you can see that rectangle is to add the instantiated class to the stage via addChild(shapeC);. My question is, is there a way that the shapeC class can add the rectangle to the root stage without requireing the instantiated class to be added to the stage?

1) I want to count the number of movieclips(in different class) added. That is, may be I have 10 clicks, how many bigfish and smallfish are created. What function is suitable to call for doing this.
2) I have a problem on the hittest, it comes out "no hit" only but I still can see the movieclips overlap. And if I want to modify that only check whether smallfish is overlap with bigfish, what should I do? Also, there are functions inside the movieclip itself to give motion.[code]

I have a 20 frame MovieClip in the library with a Class attached to it. There is nothing in the Class except the usual stuff pertaining to MovieClips with a Class (import display.movieClip and so on). The first frame in the movieClip timeline is a stop() command. I only want the clip to play sometimes. So in the main document timeline, I add the clip from the library as such:
Code:
var testClip:SampleClass = new SampleClass();
addChild(testClip);
But with this instance, I also want it to begin playing. However the following is not working:
Code:
MovieClip(testClip).play();// doesn't work?
testClip.play();// also doesn't work?
But, if I delay things a bit it DOES work - like this:
Code:
Tweener.addTween(testClip, {y:0, time:.5, onComplete:function() {testClip.play()}});
// works fine, clip begins playing
Why delaying the play command works, but telling it to play on instantiating doesn't?

I recently found a method (ByteArray.clear()) that FlexBuilder complains is possibly undefined; however, the method is in fact documented in the Flex LiveDocs. It must have been added in a later version of the SDK than I have installed. I'm not asking about this particular method, but I'm giving it as an example of the documentation issue that I'm trying to resolve. My questions are:
How can I determine what version of the SDK or Flash player that a method or property was added in? How can I tell which versions of the SDK are supported on which Flash player versions?
I want to be able to determine from the documentation, instead of compiler or runtime errors, what SDK and Flash player versions are needed to support newly added methods.
With Java I look for the @since javadoc tag when I need to know this, but I can't find an equivalent feature in the Flex docs.

I was trying to load an external SWF (that contains the below code in its document class) with the Loader class but i keep on receiving Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. So i tried to use the event listener Event.ADDED in MyDocumentClass constructor of the external SWF to let the document class be part of the display list before i invoke createRandomGraph. But when i place createRandomGraph( ) inside onStageReady, The compilation process hangs. When i leave the createRandomGraph( ) inside the constructor, it works perfectly as stand alone but will produce Error 1009 if loaded within the loader SWF
public function MyDocumentClass( )
{
this.addEventListener(Event.ADDED, onStageReady);

I have a holder movieclip, its base class is foo.[code]I put a trace in the constructor of bar so I can tell if it's being loaded properly, and when I drag out foo onto the scene and run the clip, all the little bars within it fire off correctly. However, when I add it to the scene dynamically, such as like this in the Main class:[code]Suddenly, all the little bar movieclips within foo revert to regular old movieclips and don't fire. What's interesting is if you typecast one them as Bar at some point, and their normal class is set to Bar (within the movieclip itself, rather than base class), it works and the constructors all fire, like this:[code]However, if you want multiple different types of Bar clips, and give each a base class of Bar, this won't work. They all spawn as generic movieclips. It DOES work if you go through and typecast them as either Bar1 or Bar2, but that means in practice you would have to try to typecast every child as every top-level object type every time you added the clip to the stage. You also can't have a bunch of movieclips of the same type since Flash doesn't allow it, so each one needs to be a new class, and have that class typecasted when the parent is placed on stage. Kind of defeats the purpose of OOP.
This seems to be a bug in Flash itself, but is there any way to fix it?You can download an example file here with a couple extra traces to show off what's going on: url... It still has its children, they're added and displayed, but their type changes to MovieClip, ignoring the base class.
