Flash - MovieClips Do Not Keep Their Class If Childed To A Movieclip That's Added Dynamically
Dec 19, 2010
I have a holder movieclip, its base class is foo.
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
public class Foo extends MovieClip {
public function Foo() {
[code]....
Suddenly, all the little bar movieclips within foo revert to regular old movieclips and don't fire.[URL]It still has its children, they're added and displayed, but their type changes to MovieClip, ignoring the base class.

I have a holder movieclip, its base class is foo.[code]I put a trace in the constructor of bar so I can tell if it's being loaded properly, and when I drag out foo onto the scene and run the clip, all the little bars within it fire off correctly. However, when I add it to the scene dynamically, such as like this in the Main class:[code]Suddenly, all the little bar movieclips within foo revert to regular old movieclips and don't fire. What's interesting is if you typecast one them as Bar at some point, and their normal class is set to Bar (within the movieclip itself, rather than base class), it works and the constructors all fire, like this:[code]However, if you want multiple different types of Bar clips, and give each a base class of Bar, this won't work. They all spawn as generic movieclips. It DOES work if you go through and typecast them as either Bar1 or Bar2, but that means in practice you would have to try to typecast every child as every top-level object type every time you added the clip to the stage. You also can't have a bunch of movieclips of the same type since Flash doesn't allow it, so each one needs to be a new class, and have that class typecasted when the parent is placed on stage. Kind of defeats the purpose of OOP.
This seems to be a bug in Flash itself, but is there any way to fix it?You can download an example file here with a couple extra traces to show off what's going on: url... It still has its children, they're added and displayed, but their type changes to MovieClip, ignoring the base class.

I'm more of a Flex than Flash developer so I'm hopeful this is something easy. Short story, I have a scrollpane in a flash-created swf. In my pure AS3 project I dynamically create menuitems within a new movieclip.

I have a question about Tweening for dynamically added movie clips: In Main.as constructor file I added a movie clip:
addChild (new Arrow());
in Arrow.as I want the new arrow to tween as soon as it is added by Main.as file.
To do so, in Arrow.as I put this code:
import fl.transitions.Tween;
mport fl.transitions.easing.*;
...
private function onAddedToStage(event:Event):void {
tween= new Tween (this, "x", Regular.easeInOut, x, 400, 60, false);
}
But "this" seems not to work because the file simply adds my movie clip to the stage without tweening or error messages. What I should put instead of "this" in the Arrow.as? Or any other options to tween this movie clip?

1) I want to count the number of movieclips(in different class) added. That is, may be I have 10 clicks, how many bigfish and smallfish are created. What function is suitable to call for doing this.
2) I have a problem on the hittest, it comes out "no hit" only but I still can see the movieclips overlap. And if I want to modify that only check whether smallfish is overlap with bigfish, what should I do? Also, there are functions inside the movieclip itself to give motion.[code]

I need to work in as2 and I would like to add a blank movieclip to the stage, then the user can draw in it, but but only within certain confines. So I tried to set a mask but its just not working. :-(
Code:
this.createEmptyMovieClip("draw_mc", 1);
_root.attachMovie("mask_mc", "instance1", this.getNextHighestDepth());
draw_mc.setMask(instance1);

Code:
function saveAction(evt:MouseEvent):void{
var choice=evt.target.name;
var inputText:String = saveName.text;
}
I have this and I am trying to make a variable from the contents of the input box. Simple ya? The issue is that it is a child of another clip that is being added dynamically, so it doesn't think the input exists. How do I declare the input? How can I target it's contents? Also I have a remove function that is meant to remove this same parent clip.
Code:
function closeSaveWindow(evt:MouseEvent):void{
removeChild(saver);
}
'saver' is a variable created in another function, so I think there is a scope issue there. To try to fix that I declared 'saver' as a movie clip as a global var.

this["recipe"+i].buttonMode = true;
this["recipe"+i].recipeid = i;
[Code]....
The problem is that the movieclip rotates around the center. The textfield inside the movieclip is starting at 0,0. But it still rotates around the center, how can I make it rotate at 0,0?

I have a 20 frame MovieClip in the library with a Class attached to it. There is nothing in the Class except the usual stuff pertaining to MovieClips with a Class (import display.movieClip and so on). The first frame in the movieClip timeline is a stop() command. I only want the clip to play sometimes. So in the main document timeline, I add the clip from the library as such:
Code:
var testClip:SampleClass = new SampleClass();
addChild(testClip);
But with this instance, I also want it to begin playing. However the following is not working:
Code:
MovieClip(testClip).play();// doesn't work?
testClip.play();// also doesn't work?
But, if I delay things a bit it DOES work - like this:
Code:
Tweener.addTween(testClip, {y:0, time:.5, onComplete:function() {testClip.play()}});
// works fine, clip begins playing
Why delaying the play command works, but telling it to play on instantiating doesn't?

I have a movieclip in my library named mcLeaderboarditem. I've generated a class for it to manage the textfields.
The easiest way is to make a child of the class and manage the contents properties with the dot-syntax like this (documentclass):
var leaderItem:mcLeaderboardItem = new mcLeaderboardItem();
leaderItem.lblRank.text = "2nd";
addChild(leaderItem);
[Code]....
Probably it will be something stupid because of tiredness. Or is there an other way to do what i'm trying to do?

I have created a Class called Tile and have dynamically added the movieclips to the stage in a grid like so:
Code:
for(i=0;i<7;i++){
for(j=0;j<7;j++){
var t = _root["gameboard"].attachMovie("Tile", "tile_" + i + "_" + j,

Say i have a movieclip named a_Mc ( ClassA ) I have a sub-movieclip named b_Mc ( ClassB )
CASE 1: Accessing the sub-movieclip b_Mc which is already present inside the a_Mc movieclip
( Since Flash IDE has "Automatic instance naming" OFF )
ClassA mentions the name of b_Mc as => var b_Mc:MovieClip;
NOTE HERE: That the variable name MUST BE same as the name of the instance on stage.
So i can access it as : trace( a_Mc.b_Mc);

point me to anything which will help me dynamically attach movieclips from the library into one main movieclip, which then I can duplicate it many times..You see, what happens with duplicateMovieClip,is that it duplicates the main movieclip itself, without taking its contents..I want to take the contents too. The only way I can imagine this could work, was if I could take a 'snapshot' of the movieclip and keep it as a bitmap, from which this could be duplicated - because I dont need the movieclip and its contents to contain code or have any animation playing. I just want it as an image, so I can create a pattern from..

I use these 3 movieClips to attach movieClips(questions for game) from library. I put movieClip inside movieClip to add some animation while it loads. I used following code:
for(var i:int = 0; i<3; i++) {
var pic_mc:String = "picLeft" + ranque[i];
var que_mc_class:Class = getDefinitionByName(pic_mc) as Class;

have a loop that creates buttons. Each button stays on the screen, but scrolls off, meaning there are at any one time upto 4 buttons on the screen. There are a total of 241 buttons.t is to my understanding that using an array will allow me to access these buttons later, and that is great, but I can not find a way for it to tell me exactly which button was clicked.Am I missing something very simple here?

I am making a Thumbnail class which is part of my Photo Gallery Package that I am building with the intent of automatically generating my thumbnails. I do not want to limit myself to just AS3 animations, I would also like the ability to use timeline animations. I have a system using "in" and "out" for frame labels which I find very efficient and I get stuff done quickly. So I created the thumbnails holder MovieClip with the animations and have it linked in my Library, however, when I try to pass it to my Thumbnail Class, I only get one instance and I need to create several instances.
Document Class
ActionScript Code:
var thumbCont:mcThumb = new mcThumb();
thumbNails = new Thumbnails(thumbCont);
Thumbnails Class
ActionScript Code:
var thumbContainer:MovieClip;
public function Thumbnails(thumbCont:MovieClip,) {
thumbContainer = thumbCont;
}private function createThumbs():void {
for (var i:int = 0; i < aThumbs.length; i++) {
[Code] .....
I eliminated most of the additional stuff. What this does is that it doesn't create several thumbContainers, rather it just uses the one. So how would I be able to generate several of them? I can obviously create an Array with them and create them in my document class, but if I can avoid that and have my thumbnail class do it by itself, that would be perfect.

I have recently started out with flash oop concepts and was wondering how to do create an instance of an extended movie class without dragging and dropping the clip from the library ....I have figured out this method..
for(i = 0;i<100;i++)
{var mc:MovieClip = attachMovie("ball","dasd"+i,_root.getNextHighestDe pth());
mc._x = Math.random() * 600;
mc._y = Math.random() * 600;
}
but this way I cant pass arguments to the constructor function of the ball class..

I'm trying to write a class that will create my movieclip buttons dynamically, and assign some text to a dynamic text box inside it, based on the argument I pass to the method in this class. I've got a movieclip in my library with the linkage shown below - And I've got this so far in its own AS file -
Code:
package com.willgoldstone.tutorials {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
public class Mybtn extends MovieClip{
[code]....
All I want to do is instantiate a copy of this movieClip in my library and assign a value to its dynamic text field..

I'm working on a photo-sharing demo using AS2.0, I would like to dynamically load photos (stored as jpgs in the .fla's local directory) into MovieClips, and apply a class instance to them. Currently, for debugging, I've imported jpgs to the Stage, converted them to MovieClips, and then accessed their linkage properties, setting them to the class I need them to implement. But for the final application all of this will have to be done with code.
I know how to dynamically load the jpg into a MovieClip using loadImage(), and I know how to create a MovieClip that is an instance of a class by using attachMovie() with a library symbol and the class name. How do I combine the two? Is there a way to access the linkage properties of a MovieClip dynamically?

Assume I know practically nothing about AS3! I'm using Flash Pro CS5. I'm trying to reassociate a flash file I've been given with its external assets and classes. In the library I have a movieclip with linkage to a class called 'StaticMap' using the base class 'flash.display.MovieClip'. am I missing a custom class file called 'StaticMap.as' that was originally located in the same folder as the fla, or is this a generic class accessible to all movieClips from within Flash?
