View 1 RepliesFrom what I understand, ActionScript (.as files) and Action Panel (F9 embedded in Flash) are completely different. If so, which one is better used for game programming and which one is more powerful? Can ActionScript do everything that the Actions Panel can do?
View 1 RepliesI have created a function which spawns a enemy out of the library random upon any of the four corners of the stage. But know I want to add individual AI to each one: This is the random spawn:

How would I go about such a task. Btw if you have trouble understanding the mechanics of my messy code please say and I'll do my best to explain it.
I'm a programmer familiar with object oriented programming, with experience in C++, C# and the MS Visual Studio development environment.
I've been tasked to create a web based game using Flash CS4 and ActionScript3. I am new to Flash, ActionScript and game programming. I have never used previous versions of Flash or ActionScript.
The game will be a single player role playing game. The player will have the ability to create an avatar. The player will move the avatar from screen to screen based on button clicks or drag and drop onto objects in the current screen. Players must register, and player information will be stored in a database backend. Additonal data will be saved to the backend database during game play.The saved data will be based on player actions in various screens, and in some cases data entered in a form on a screen.
For a first pass a stick figure avatar and screens containing simple buttons and simple objects to drag the avatar to will be sufficient. I would like to store data in a database tracking date/time information, e.g. date/time each screen is entered/exited.
I wish to program a Pacman game, only it's designed with perspective (3d-like). Since the vertical lines are diagonal, I would think the best way to approach this would be to draw the maze with simple line shapes, then restrict the movement of all objects to those lines (let's call it "thePath"). The movement of objects would be determined by the angle of each segment of thePath. This gets complicated once I need the computer-generated enemies to both move along thePath, and to determine the shortest path to the Pacman.
View 1 RepliesAre there any relatively simple programs for building flash applications. I want to add a basic card game to my site, that can keep track of the user's score. The site right now is built in just html, though I will be changing it over to php shortly to implement a log in system. I'd really like to avoid having to learn actionscript on top of it, there has to be some sort of.. basic wysiwyg type flash builder out there?
View 2 RepliesI'm making a game that populates user-designed cards into the game using an external xml file. My main class loads the xml file and then calls to the "Card" class, which wants to use the xml file. I've tried using this.parent and it just gives me a null object reference error. This is what I have so far: Main.as

View 1 RepliesOn load - Get the current position of the movieclip object on stage which is stored in MySQL through PHP.When the user moves the movieclip object, update the x and y position of the object by sending it to MySQL through PHP.It's a pretty simple way of understanding Flash/PHP/MySQL Integration and I find it much less complex than a socket server but I don't think it's efficient enough to use with the constant queries. [URL] Does not really work very well, dont think the Y position works at all lol, when you refresh the page it is suppose to save your current object position into the database then load it again but it appears a bit buggy, not completely sure why - I'm pretty new to Load/Send but it doesnt matter much. Also the movement appears to be lagged too and opening a new window as a 'new user' does not share the same instance of the object on stage (I think that would require me to make seperate ID's for each user though to give them their own unique objects on stage.)Is there any better (more efficient and reliable) way of creating a stage for multi-user interaction (like player characters for a game which move around by user key input, not a chat room)...Which does not involve the use of a socket server?

View 8 RepliesWe are currently using some simple AS2 templates with adobe connect pro to add some interactivity to our elearning courses. We are hoping to take this a step further using SDK to give a live report to the meeting host. A current AS2 template that we use looks like this: The .swf contains 4 buttons, only 1 of which is the correct answer. Currently, the participant will click the correct button in their individual instance and reveal a message informing them that they are correct and may move on to the next question. It would be a greater learning experience if once all of the participants had answered, everyone in the meeting could see a break-down of what answers people gave.
E.g. 77% selected answer A 10% selected answer B. This could then be analysed and discussed with the trainer. I know this is not disimilar to the poll function built into connect but we need the answers to be images rather than text. Therefore, the question is really around the coding that would be used to implement such a system and as to what code we could use. We are not professional flash developers, rather trainers that have begun to dabble in self-taught flash and can use the SDK on a very basic level for synchronizing text input fields and pod re-sizing etc.
i plan to do video chatting i m able to do p2p and i want to do group chat i cant get any reference for that..

View 1 RepliesI'm developing a web-based fantasy football game. Most of the game is a straight-forward web application built on top of Linux/Apache/Php/MySQL.
I'm trying to figure out how to implement the draft application. The draft date and time will be scheduled in advance by each league's owner. Up to 32 users may be logged on for a given league's draft, and there is no limit to how many drafts may be happening concurrently. The users will take turns selecting players, and each user's turn will have a time limit. I'd like for all the users to be able to see whose turn it is, how much time that user has left to select a player, who they select, and which players are still available. If there are users in the league who are not logged in during the draft I'd like to be able to detect that and automatically assign players to them rather than waiting for the time to run out on their turn. Ideally I'd also like to have a chat window so the users could chat with one another during the draft.
My background is in desktop application development, so if necessary I could write server code in C#/.NET or Java. As far as I can see these are the options: PHP/AJAX - It seems like it would be possible to have all the state for the draft in the database and have the operations for the draft run in PHP triggered by requests from the clients? I guess in this case the draft doesn't start until at least one user logs in, and it seems like it would be a lot of polling requests to the server if I want everyone notified quickly when a user makes a selection.

is it possible to develope multi player game from different computers in flash using as3. As i hv learned abt AS3 we cant create a server socket it can only send the req to server socket. but it can e done through AIR(I HOPE SO),
View 1 RepliesI want to create a simple game (Adobe Air) based on 2 players using ActionScript 3.Let's assume I want to create online chess game.So that I can play with my friend at work, at home, from anywhere via internet.Should I use flash server? Or something similar for this purpose, or there is simpler way to connect 2 players and make fully functional interaction between them?
View 2 RepliesI have an air application that I'd like to turn into a multi-player game. I'd like to have 2-40 concurrent connections per "room". We would like to have 1-10 rooms going at once in the beginning. I'd like for users to be able to share voice and video but that's not a requirement.
Users will be racing each other based on data that's updated once every second, so ping doesn't have to be super low. 1000ms would be fine but lower is preferred.[URL]..
Cirrus looks perfect. I've heard some problems about firewall and port settings, but was wondering if anyone had experience with at home users and Cirrus. Another problem is that it's been in labs for ever. You can get RTMFP with Flash Media Server Enterprise but that's like 60k-70k per processor, way out of our price range. I've also looked at [URL] but it doesn't support RTMFP. I know we can host this on AWS and maybe save some money.
There is an open source project (cumulus) that implements RTMFP too but I've read that it's more of a POC then a production ready project. The license is also GPL which doesn't work for our commercial application. I've also looked at[URL].. but again, no RTMFP integration.The reason I like RTMFP is because we can scale without a lot of server cost. I know it's a closed protocol from Adobe and it looks like wowza or red5 won't be implementing it any time soon.
Is there an affordable (not 70k per processor) server tech for multi-player gaming that you can use with AIR/Flash that scales well?
im creating a card game. i have a seperate timeline for the menu bar. ive placed this code on the first cell of the timeline:
Code:
import mx.controls.Menu;
import mx.controls.MenuBar;[code].....
the problem i get is that when the user selects "new game" it should restart the game. when it does this the toolbar is not reset. instead a new menu item is added (without removing the old one. so evertime the user hits new game, a new "file" menu is added). how do i make sure there is only 1 "File" menu? and im using actionscript 2
I'm a student at Drexel University and I just completed a basic platformer for a actionscript class. My professor docked me some points for the game not working until the user actually clicks within the swf. I've heard that this problem is caused on mac osx, but I don't have any concrete evidence to get the points back. Here's a link to the game if you want to check it out.

I want to put two games in my website but they both start at the same time.How can I get them to start separately when the user clicks them?
View 1 RepliesHere's the battle plan:
User logs into website.
User clicks the Play button and a new window opens with the flash game in it.
If the user is logged into website, have the flash game load. Otherwise ask him for credentials.
Is this type of interconnectivity possible? Can I give a flash object (.swf) something to use?
im making a game but im already having trouble with the first code, i just want the user to fall when he is not touching a floor....i put this code on the user:
[AS]onClipEvent(enterFrame){
if(falling=true){
this._y=this._y+5}[code]....
theres is no errors but it doesnt stop when it hits the floor
I have a jet_mc object flying from left to right, i got that part ok but my question is how can make it fly from left to right again and again untill the user finish the game. what line of code should i add to make it loop.stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,run)function run (e:Event){ jet_mc.x-=5}
View 4 RepliesA student of mine is wanting to create a drag and drop game in which the user selects a possible answer for a range, drags it over a object named as "dropzone". the correct answer is left over the dropzone, and the user clicks the check button they need to be sent to a frame displaying "correct" - otherwise, sent to a frame for incorrect.I currently have a set up in which the user is given an auto response using a dynamic text box and all is done on the one frame, but this student wants to be a little different.
View 3 RepliesI'm using Flash CS3, AS2, PHP, mysql database with phpbb user registration. What I'm trying to do is a make a contest game where you have 5 different ladies and the users get to rank them in order from 1 to 5. Since it is a contest, users will need to be logged in. We already have a database of users based on phpbb, and a registration page. I need them to be able to log in using that username/pass and then they can play the game.
The game consists of a drag and drop mechanism (which I have) so the user can drag "#1" to "girl-4", drag "#2" to "girl-5" etc. Once they drag and drop all the boxes into the order they want, the user then submits it. The data I need to capture in the database is the User, date/time, their rank order (seperated so we can do a query to figure out how many they got right out of the 5.) The final twist is that we are going to have 9 total 'games', one each week for 9 weeks, and we only want users to be able to play once per week.
For an example you can see a working version here. That one does a bunch of more complicated stuff that I don't want to do. The programmer that did it is no longer here and it has been hard trying to decipher his code. I have the whole drag and drop mechanism using the old code from the above example. This is a snippit of the code. drag1_mc is the number they drag (there are 5, so drag1_mc, drag2_mc etc.) and drop1_mc is the rank location. (also 5, drop1_mc, drop2_mc, etc)

I've developed a game that records how long it took to complete the game. At the end of the game it shows the user how long it too to complete. I want to be able display message to the user depending on how quickly they took to complete the game. I have set up a dynamic text box called "message" that will display the message, but I am struggling to figure out the syntax for :
If gametime is less than 60 secs then message = "well done thats very quick"
If gametime is between 60 and 80 secs then message = "Not bad at all"
If gametime is between 81 and 100 secs then message = "Its good but not good enough"
If gametime is between 101 and 120 secs then message = "You can do better than that!"
If gametime is between 121 and 140 secs then message = "Too slow, you need to practice"
If gametime is greater than 140 then message = "Did you fall asleep?"
ive got the following code. bevvy is a movieclip, theres a dynamic text box called feedText nd a box.. imaginately called box. I'm trying to create a drag and drop game when the user drags a word into the box that will have its meaning beside it in a text box, the dynamic text box will tell them if they are right or not. if they are right the word stays, if not the word will go back to its original location. the dynamic text box will give feedback whether they are right or not.
the code below means that the word will stay in the box, but the text message is displayed all the time. i also have a reset button to make the word return to its origal location but id rather not have the button.

I'm making an interactive kind of game, and I want a number of scenes to change once the user has looked at each once.For example, they go into three different scenes. When they finish looking at them all, Flash records this, and then when they look back at each scene again, they've all changed.
