ActionScript 3.0 :: Relative Stacking Order For Added Children?

I'm producing some animations that have movie clips introduced by a video player cue point handler.The video is on a given layer in the timeline scheme. When one uses addChild(); to introduce a movie clip, is there some way of specifying what layer it should appear on? Otherwise, is there a way of controlling the stacking order of the various components on the stage?

Basically I have a little app where a pop up palette contains dragable movie clips that then are placed on the main stage. However when the palette pops up for a second time it remains behind the placed movie clips. The clips have to be on top of the palette initially, but something like on release swapDepths?

I've been following the Changing Stacking Order (swapDepth) tutorial but there's something I'd like to know.In this tutorial, we have 3 buttons inside 3 Mc's. Each Mc is called green, yellow and blue.The AS code for each button is:

What I would like to get is that the MC (window) that I click, goes to the top, BUT respecting the relative position for the others. I mean, in this tutorial, if you run the swf file and put every window a bit one over the other, and click the bottom window, it will come to the top, but the other two won't keep their relative position because the clicked window will be swapped with the one on the top. Understand? (it's very simple although difficult to explain).To make it easier: let's imagine we have 3 papers on the table and I pick up the one in the bottom and put it on top....this is exactly what I want (but in this tutorial, the other 2 papers are moved aswell). I just want that the window I click gets on top of the other 2, nothing else.
According to Kirupa's words, this EXAMPLE here is done using swapdepth aswell, and IT'S EXACTLY the behaviour that I want. Just compare this one with the one in the tutorial and see the different window behaviour.The thing is that I don't know how to do this with "swapdepths". In the AS reference bok it says it can be done but (as usual) they don't tell you how to do it...

I've been working with this file for quite some time now. I have several buttons in this file - for example, general information. From this button (actually mc, using hittest to function as a faux button), another menu springs out. This menu overlaps the button underneath it.
The problem I've been having is that, when the submenu pops out, the user is still able to activate the buttons beneath the submenu (it overlaps the other "main" buttons).
My solution was to "hide" the movieclips that are overlapped by the submenus, like this:

I have a series of mc's that I'm adding to the a display list of "theContainer".
I've set up my code so I can click any mc in that list and make it "selected". I can then, with controls outside "theContainer", change the selected clip's scale or alpha, etc.
I'd like to set up 2 buttons outside that display list so I can change the stacking order of those clips in "theContainer".
So if I add clip "a" to the display list, then add clip "b" to the display list then add "c" and "d" and "e and "f" to it, I want to be able to move any of those clips forward or backward.

How do I change the stacking order of Display Objects in AS3? I have a semi-transparent caption box that is supposed to be on top of externally loaded images. no matter where I place the script for that box in the code, the images always load on top of it.

Is there a way to use actionscript to change the stacking order of objects?I run two functions when i start my game, one that adds the player and set it's properties and one that generates the map. The add player function is run last so the player will appear above the map, the problem is that i have some objects on my map that i would like to appear infront of the hero, like certain tree's for example.
Is there a way i can make these objects appear infront by using actionscript? Using different layers won't work as everything is generated dynamically.

I have an FLA with a section in it where I need to swap between images (one over the other and so on, which I have done using swap depth) what I want to know is if there is a way to make the transition from one pic to the other smoother by using alpha from 100% to zero, thus revealing the picture beneath.

I know, there is a tutorial about changing stacking order [URL], but the makers were so kind to use Mx files for the .fla's.

When I click one of the 4 buttons, the image related to that button has to move to the hightest position. And ofcourse the previous highest one should be the one under the new highest image. Well, I tried to fix the script, but for some reason it gets all confused and starts switching images, and sometimes none.

I'm getting a list of movieclips with attached scripts to display, but when I try to put them on the sceen nothing shows up.I can trace the elements in the list and it will tell me there are elements there.I can trace getChildAt(numChildren -1) and it will tell me there is something there but nothing is visible.If I generate the list in the constructor of the class that handles the displaying it does show them, but when I try to load them when they are actually needed they don't show up.Here's a simplification of the code(its a small part of a larger project and I can't put all of it up somewhere public)This code does what it should do(unfortunately that is not what I need done)

The traces all show up so I know its running the method, the traces tell me it adds stuff the the screen, but what I see on the screen remains completely stagnant, as if nothing is being added.

I have a little trouble in managing the children my container. The fact is that it has a lot of children and their y coordinates are very random.
Is there anyway i can order them by y coordinates that the lower will be in the front and the higher with be in the back?
is it something that that I can do with 2 "for"?

take the children of an object, the children are groups nested within a parent group, and sort them based on their x coordinate. so the one furthest left (lowest x) is in position 0 and so on.

I have a set of movieclips that are added as children to a parent mc. I want to scale the parent mc up but keep one of the mc's in the same place on the stage. I think the easiest way to do that is to scale the mc up, calculate how far the child mc moves and move the parent an equal amount in th opposite direction. Everything works but I can't for the life of me wrap my head around the math required to calculate the distance to move the parent mc. Has anyone else tried this? Is there an easier way that I don't know about?

I'm using the following array to add children to the stage:

Now I want to modify each cherry based on another array. Something like this:

Clearly stage.getChildByName("aCherry")[i] isn't correct, but coming from JavaScript this makes the most sense to me and should accurately portray what I'm trying to achieve for you guys reading this. So, how would I actually do this? This being getting an array of children added to the stage under a certain name or class (so an array of cCherry would work too, if necessary), then using them in a way similar to the above loop.

I'm adding a series of objects dynamically to my flash movie from xml but they won't appear when I run the movie. I have nearly identical code adding objects in a different swf that works just fine. I have tested this 8 ways from Sunday including ensuring that they were added to the container which is a child of the main MovieClip (tested the display list), that they were added to stage (had a listener for ADDED_TO_STAGE) and that their position was correct (displayed x,y values and compared them to mouseX & mouseY values). They are in the correct place in the display list. Still there are no objects. The class is linked correctly, I have movie clips in the library.[code]

i want to do is to remove all the children (ninge) added with Timer when the user rolls out the mouse. The ideea is when the user moves his mouse over the movieclip it begins to snow and when it moves away i want all the snow to disappear.

I would like to pre-process *any* item added to the display list of my main movie clip, so I attached the Event.ADDED event to the stage.
Seems to be working fine for timeline objects and objects loaded from the library (such as addChild(newClass())).
But I don't know how to manage stuff loaded from an external SWF. I'm getting Event.ADDED when I addChild() the loaded swf, but not for its children...
How can I know who are they children? (avoiding ENTER_FRAME if possible).

this is not CRUCIAL but I would like to be able to change it.As the notes come down the screen, they get added on top of each other since each child is added at a specific time.Is there a way I can reverse the sort order? So notes added after notes become layered behind instead of in front?

I am trying to add children to a dynamically added swf file, using AS3, before I add it to stage

I have a rectangular movieClip named 'container'. In this movieclip, a function generates some number of squares.My problem is that; for example, if I generate 12x12 squares with each width/height of 40; it resizes the container to width/height of 480. If I set the width and the height of the container movieClip to a lower value; then the squares become smaller.I have been struggling for some time on this problem. I tried setting the ScaleMode of container and squares to various values but it did not work.How can I overcome this illogical (for me at least) problem? How can I prevent children from resizing their parent OR how can i prevent parent downsizing the children?

I used to have the checkbox MovieClips in the menuListingClass, but I instead wanted to add them using something like addChild(). However when I try to reference the checkboxs later in the same way as I did before, I get an Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties. I have this and I am trying to make a variable from the contents of the input box. Simple ya? The issue is that it is a child of another clip that is being added dynamically, so it doesn't think the input exists. How do I declare the input? How can I target it's contents? Also I have a remove function that is meant to remove this same parent clip.

'saver' is a variable created in another function, so I think there is a scope issue there. To try to fix that I declared 'saver' as a movie clip as a global var.

I am loading in some images and adding them to a movie using: mc.addChild(imageLoader); once all the images have been loaded in , i want to alternate the order of the children, so a different child is in the front and in view. i have been reading up a little on it and it seems the example i find are changing the order of different mc's . whereas i have 1 mc and im trying to change the order of its children.

I have an array of objects which uses a delimited string as the keys. When examined in the FB4 debugger, the keys look like this:[code]The first two items are numeric (cast to string) but the third item in the multi-part delimited key is naturally a string -- it's like an alphanumeric library shelf reference. As expected, when you click on the [+] icon in the debugger, you can view the object associated with that string key. So far so good.The debugger shows the keys in the (pre-sorted) order in which they were added to the array. However, when iterating the object array so:[code]the keys are returned in some other order --internal hash? My question is, how does the debugger know the order the keys were added in, and can I access that knowledge at runtime when iterating the array? I want to iterate the objects in the order in which they were added. Or do I need to maintain my own index of these keys showing the order they were added to the associative array?
