I have flash CS4 and I understand that you can "easily" replicate the star wars text scroll effect with the 3d tools. [URL]. I have followed that tutorial to the best of my ability but no matter what I do, I cannot get the text to scroll into the distance, it just moves upwards.
View 10 RepliesI'm working on a standalone Flash application (written using Flex 3/ActionScript 3) that features a text crawl, like what you might see at the bottom of your TV when watching a cable news channel; it's a long narrow box that text moves across from right to left. I've implemented it by creating a Label element, populating it with text, and then moving it using a mx:Move object with a Linear.easeNone easing function. It works, but it has ample room for improvement. It looks a bit jerky, and tends to have a fair amount of "tearing" (the top and bottom halves of the text sometimes fall out of sync).
I tried throwing math at the problem to get the crawl's movement rate synced with the monitor's refresh rate, but that was a bust. I found out the hard way that the app's frame rate jumps around too much; the "optimized" crawl varied between looking silky smooth and like it had epilepsy.
Is there anything else folks would recommend I try to smooth this thing out? Is there some alternate design you'd recommend I try?
Edit: Some context: the crawl is part of a digital signage application (played from a standalone Flash projector -- no web browser) that does stuff elsewhere on the screen, including video playback and rendering text and images. It definitely gets choppier during video playback, but it's never as smooth as I'd like it to be.

browsing the macromedia site of the day yesterday i noticed and effect i had not seen before, at least to my knowledge. notice the scrolling text in the bottom left. now grab the bar and move it manually. notice the blurring effect? any ideas on how this is done?

View 0 RepliesI need help with a health bar that I am trying to create for my game, Nerd Wars. I have 2 health bar, the players health bar that changes from weapon choice and an enemy bar which shows the enemy health when the players weapon choice is on.
Between the change animation I have put a few second for the enemy/player health bar to go down in. The health bars should be going down by a certain random amount between 40 and 60 and this is where I think the problem is. post code that would generate a random number between 40 and 60 and assign it to a variable. I think that would be a good place to start.
I'm creating this simple strip crawl of logos (1920x95). It's a about 40 logos in one strip that I imported. I created a tween that scrolls the logos right to left lasting about 1 1/2 minutes @ 24fps. When I export the SWF file the scroll is not smooth and there is all types of small jerky movements.
View 2 RepliesI am currently creating a remake of the game Geometry Wars but in Flash using AS2 but the further you get through the game it seems the more lag builds up. And it is down to my computer (which does suck) but it's been tested on multiple pretty good PCs. It lags when a lot of enemies enter the screen but to be fair there isn't a lot. Stuff I am doing to prevent lag:
-Enemies are not visible when offscreen.
-Unwanted movieclips (like bullets) are deleted once offscreen.
-Main ships 'onEnterFrame' is split up in to lot of small functions.
I know you can use the mouse wheel to scroll through text in the flash componenet scroll pane, but is there a way to set it up to work with the code I have posted below?

I've gotten to chapter 5 in my AS 3.0 classroom book but I need to use wisdom today (CHAPTERS before I gain it for myself),I need to create a custom scroll bar with buttons that function just like the UIScrollBar but more visually suited to our projects. the boss demands it.
I found several tutorials on creating the custom scrollBar, however, they don't include the buttons and I'm unable to find a tutorial on how to create a button scroller (I figured I could link them both to my "info_txt" after creating them separately).

What I'm really interested in is how, when you release the "sun", the tickets don't stop spinning until the one closest to the middle of the stage is directly in the middle of the stage. I've been trying to accomplish this with a some scrollable thumbnails. But when you release the arrow keys, it stops where ever it was on MOUSE_UP.

There are 'sights' over the 3 middle doors. The sights remain in the same place, but when you press the left or right arrow key the clip of the 12 doors scrolls in that direction and stop at the next door. View 2 RepliesI really like the text effect Pom used in the footer contest, and would like to use the same grid-type method of creating mc letters but with a different effect. i understand how to change the parameters and shapes of the letters, but can't seem to figure out which piece of code is purely for the explosion effect. basically, i want the letters but with the 'Repel' effect from[URL] here is Pom's AS:

I really want to use this panning/scrolling effect for some thumbnails in a flash portfolio. My only problem is it's AS3 and I'm using Flash 8 (AS2). I've tried re-working the code, but with no luck. It's the EventListener that is confusing me!

Following some tutorials, I coded for a thumbnail scroll panel that works just fine. The thumbnails are scrolling when the mouse if hovering the panel and stops scrolling when the mouse leaves the panel.
However, I'd like to create a slow down effect on the thumbnail scroll panel when the mouse cursor leaves the scroll panel (instead of immediately stop scrolling).
I'm building a web app to design and animate simple 3d scenes using the Away3D library, but the design of the interface itself is built around a scrolling menu which takes up the whole height of the screen.
The problem is, on OSX browsers have a silly quirk where if the page is scrolled when it has already gone as far as it can, the page can be dragged slightly further, revealing a brushed metal background. This looks nice and whatnot, but it pretty much ruins scrolling in a swf object. I use flash builder and export to safari, which is just about useable, if pretty annoying (especially with a mac touchpad, which can give a much higher scroll delta than a mousewheel can), but when I open my app in firefox/chrome the same effect happens, and causes the app and browser to slow down drastically.
I've found code which uses ExternalInterface to stop the swf sending mouse events to the page, but they all seem to disable detection in the swf as well, and I can't find anything else which help. If anyone knows of a solution you'll be saving me from throwing a few months' work away for what seems like a suspiciously unnecessary drawback to Flash on OSX!
take a look at the swf and tell me what kind of transition is equalent to that image movement effect when the user clicks on the scroll?
View 2 RepliesI have added 2 text3D textfields for each plane that gets rendered via xml.Everything works fine, yet as more planes get added via xml the carousel slows down considerably.If I remove the text3D fields the carousel rotates very smooth and at normal speed. Is this just a limitation of text3D in Papervision3D or is there a way to optimize this better? Yes, smooth is set to false and images have been optimized.

I'm obviously not asking anyone to build the whole thing for me, just point me in the right direction.
