What to use when 32 bit ints or even 53 bit Numbers arent large enough by far? Im thinking of just using a 256 bit array but theres prolly a better way.

Everything seems to be a string right now & that kinda ruins the whole xml as an internal data structure thing, I don't need a big tree of string I need typed data :-/ Are there any changes I can make to either my XML files or my AS3 code that will force it to cast ints as ints and Numbers as Numbers? Or maybe some kind of type schema I can impose? Not really worked with XML til recently so chances are I'm just ignorant of the canonical way to deal with this...

Or... how do you XOR doubles without getting integer results? I am using Actionscript 3.0 and found the following:
var a:Number = 3.000000004;
var b:Number = 29.999999999;
trace ("a: " + a); //3.000000004[code]..........
Clearly, the XOR operation is converting my Numbers into ints. I am a bit surprised by this and don't exactly understand the reason behind it. But I do know that other bitwise operations will also change Number into int, so I am not that surprised.Be that as it may, is there a way to XOR doubles (aka Numbers) without having them get truncated to integers?I used the above XOR originally for performance optimization (these number switches are executed millions of times in an array).I assumed if I skipped the temporary variable, I would see a speed increase.Alas, if the Number data gets changed to int, it is all for naught.
public static function reversePairs(values:Vector.<Number>):void {
//1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 -> 5, 6, 3, 4, 1, 2
var l:int = values.length;[code].........

Flash is known to behave in very unpredictable ways ways when it comes to manipulating data. I'm curious that if there is any performance/memory benefit to using Numbers instead of ints aside from values that need precision. I have heard that some basic operations in Flash may convert multiple times between the two type to resolve the expression. I've also heard that Flash runtime, under the hood, actually maps ints to non-precision Numbers/Floats during runtime. Is any of this true?

I am trying to convert a string having numbers to an integer.
//15 9's are there
var str:String="999999999999999"
var res:Number = new Number(str);
But it is not able to convert correctly as the the var res now has the value 100000000000000000. I know that the number has 52 bits of memory, then why is it not able to do the conversion?

I am working on a maths game which involves generating some large numbers in AS3. When I pass these numbers into a textbox they appear as e.g. 300000, I would like them to appear as 300,000.Is it possible to format a text box to do this?

I'm trying to get the 255 smallest numbers from an array made up of all the alpha values in a given BitmapData, and storing these numbers in the Alpha array for paletteMap().We all know how to get the smallest/highest number from an array, or to delete repeating numbers or even to average numbers inside an array. I've been tweaking for 2 days with these possibilities but unfortunately I can't find anything satisfactory.

I am using a Dictionary where the keys are Number objects, but I run into unexpected problems if the keys are large integers.
Here is some example code that inserts two key-value pairs in a Dictionary, one with a small key and one with a large one:
var dictionary:Dictionary = new Dictionary();
var smallNumberKey:Number = 1;
dictionary[smallNumberKey] = "some value";
[Code].....
None of the keys seems to be stored as a Number. Why is that? The first one is stored as an int, which can be converted to a Number. The second one however seems to be stored as a String, which makes no sense to me. What is going on here?

I have plans to make an RPG that is similar to those on the SNES as far as movement goes- you walk one tile in a direction at a time and if the tile that you are trying to move to has been marked as one that can't be walked on, it stops the character from going there. That means that conventional collision wouldn't quite cut it.
So I decided that I would make it to where every tile will have a specific value (one to say that there is no collision, another to say there is, etc.), and every object will have an X and Y value that changes in relation to the character (because there is scrolling in this project).
The thing is, there will be a lot of objects, and there will be a lot of tiles; this will quickly become an unimaginably huge project if I just go ahead and throw objects in.
So, what would be the most efficient way of storing these values? I was thinking of storing it in an XML file or a class, but I haven't really done it before, so I want to get a second opinion before I try and do so.

How do I find the digit sum of a floating point number?* (Eg Math.pow(10,100)). The correct answer would be 1. I have tried writing two functions, function A does not work for floating point numbers due to it converting numbers to strings, function B does not work for Math.pow(10,100) and other floating point numbers).
Specially: (1 with X zeros) % 10 = not 0, according to flash.
*Alternatively, what method can I use that gives me the last digit of a floating point number, and works for 1 with some number of zeros?
My functions:
private function getDSum(input:Number):Number {
var res:Number = 0;
for(var i = 0; i < input.toString().length+1; i++){

I was wondering if anyone here had any advice on rendering large numbers of identicalanimated instances. The first step we undertook was to separate out the parts of the instance which are static and render flag them cache as bitmap. However I was wondering if there was a way of rendering the same object multiple times without the player having to recalculate the animations separately for each etc?

when cacheAsBitmap is true, do x and y suddenly become ints? im ok with them being drawn this way, but my calculations require x and y to be numbers, because else strange behaviour occurs, which is happening now.

I have a project made in flex, using php data services to access a sql server database, and I need to convert it to mysql, I have changed all my php services from sqlsrv to mysqli. Something like this:
$this->connection = mysqli_connect(SERVER,USERNAME,PASSWORD,DATABASE); // Start Connection
$ssqlstring = "select * from Users";
$runssql = mysqli_query($this->connection, $ssqlstring);
while($user = mysqli_fetch_array($runssql)) {
$users[$user["ID"]] = $user;
} return $users;
It worked fine on sqlsrv but with mysqli it returns to flex the INT, BIT or DATE values as string the main Datatypes on mysql are INT,VARCHAR,BIT(1),DATETIME,DATE (same as sqlsrv)
and on the flex the return types are mainly as object[]

how to do this and not found much, so here goes:
I want to generate a variable number of random numbers less than 16 with no duplicate numbers
Ive posted the fla, and what i'm doing is generating a random number and putting it into an array then using a for loop to cycle through the array for each new random number to check if its already there. if it is, then i want to regenerate that number.
if you test the fla you'll see that all i get in my array is some lovely zero's and i sort of know why this is, but don't know how to stop it.

I have a flash file, which is a header for a website. I inherited it from my company's previous webmaster. I was looking through the library items & see alot of images & graphics that I don't see in the finished product on the webpage. The guy worked really sloppy so it's possible there's alot of unused items. Is there anyway to easily tell which items are not used in the final exported flash file so I can clean it up?

create a function that picks out X amount of numbers from a set of numbers? So if X=3, then i need this function to pick out 3 different numbers from say a set of numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) and then stored it into X number of variables.
In saying that, X will only =2, and =5. So in the first instance, i'll need 2 random numbers from the set above that are not the same numbers, and second instance 5 random numbers from the set above (also no repeats of numbers). Then i need to be able to store those 2 or 5 different random numbers from the set into variables to call them with other functions.

I'm new to the forums here and new to AS3 (I have some AS2 experience, and lots of general programming experience).nd I've made a few tweaks, including most significantly, fading out and killing particles after a certain amount of time. But I have a problem: I can't figure out why some of my particles live longer than they should.In more detail:In particles.as, for each dust particle that gets generated, the fadeOut function should get called after half a second, and when that tween is done, the killParticle function should get called. This seems to work for most particles but every now and then a few particles will stick around (i.e. the fadeOut function won't get called)Watch the animation: linkOh, and I'd love to know if there's anything I can do to increase performance as well. This is pretty cpu-heavy right now.All my .fla file does is include particles.as. See code below.particles.as
Code:
import fl.transitions.Tween;
import fl.transitions.easing.*;
[code].....

ActionScript Code:
public function randomRange(max:Number, min:Number = 0):Number
{
return Math.round(Math.random() * (1+max - min) + min);
}
trace(randomRange(3,-31));
But I need a code which will return some times '3' and some times '-31'. Not the number between them.

I have been using Actionscript 3.0 in Adobe Flash Builder for a few weeks,and I really like it! Bare with me because I'm not really good at it, yet. Anyway, I was wondering how would I go by adding up odd numbers from an array of numbers? I know how to make all of the numbers add up, but adding only the odd numbers I'm not so sure how to do it.

It seems that my 4 buttons aren't linking correctly or something.I'm linking with labels, like this:
Code:
on (release) {
gotoAndPlay("intro");
}
The links go like this: Home, Photos, About Us, Contact Us.Here's what's wrong:
1.) If I click on About Us from the homepage, it goes to Photos instead.
2.) If I click on Photos while I'm on the Photos page, it goes to some unknown frame before the photos label, and stops where I don't even have a stop placed.

I have an object (button) on frame 2 of my timeline, with the name btnMenu. When clicked, i want to return to frame 1 in the timeline. Actionscript 3 does not allow me to bind the eventlistener to the button from my code on frame 1.Layout:layer 1: Actions, only on frame 1layer 2: btnMenu, only on frame 2 (with an empty frame in front)Code:
stop(); // don't automatically go to frame 2
btnMenu.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, function() { gotoAndStop(1); }
(and other code to go to frame 2 obviously)The error i get is "can't find method/property of object that is null" (roughly translated).

I'm trying to compile an SWC file and everything works great until the part where it needs to add components, none of them added added to the .swc file at all.
The original file should be somewhere around 211 KB and when i compile it its only 1.64 KB, after unpacking the .swc and then the .swf inside it i can see that there is no components added at all.
BTW some components showing some errors but i dont think its a reason to not include ALL the components because the errors are like:
Description Resource Path Location Type
1084: Syntax error: expecting rightparen before leftbrace. XXX.as /XXX/[source path] src/com/XXX line 1469 Flex Problem
What could the problem be? ask me if you need some future info cause i don't really know what to include in here cause there is no code it's only a project with a library.

I'm using Flash Pro 8 and I'm attempting to incorporate events into some of my classes and I'm having nothing but problems. After looking at lots of examples, this all seems okay, but doesn't work. First is the class code and secondly is the code on the timeline.
ActionScript Code:
import mx.events.EventDispatcher;
class iaicu.mycampus.ClassSchedule {[code].....
Keep in mind that these classes are more elaborate, so events are intended to be more useful.
