ActionScript 3.0 :: Build A Hidden Object Game - Accurate Collisions With Mouse
Oct 27, 2010
I'm currently trying to build a hidden object game, but am having difficulty getting accurate results with where the mouse is clicking. I thought using hitTestPoint to check whether the mouse's coordinates were actually colliding with the pixels of the shape would work, but this produces the exact same results as simply checking for a MouseEvent.CLICK event. It seems to be returning true even if the pixels being clicked on are transparent (i.e. just background/not part of the shape). Is there any way to check whether the pixels being clicked on actually contain the image of the object being searched for?

I am making a breakout type game where you bounce a ball around and it hits & breaks blocks.The issue im having is with handling the ball after a collision is detected.Every frame the ball checks four points on its surface to see if they are colliding with any of the blocks. The problem occurs when the ball starts moving fast. The ball's radius is 7 pixels. If it is moving upwards at higher than7 px/ frame, then the ball might end up half way into one of the blocks.
In that case the ball detects a collision on its top AND on its side (which is bad -- If the ball is travelling upwards it should detect the collision at the top of the ball)how I could fix this so that I can make the ball move fast without sacrificing the accurate detection of collisions??

I have 4 ball movie clips, a playhead and four target movieclips called mc_1-4, the array, (my_array), has 4 elements, which are each defined as having values of 0: I have a hitTest set up that will trace my_array to the output window each time it hits mc_1, to see what is happening. However the hitTest prints the array 3 times?
Am i right in thinking that this is because the hitTest is being triggered on entry of mc_1 in the center and upon exit?I need to make this hitTest be triggered once when the hitTest passes the center of mc_1. Secondly if any of the balls have been dragged and dropped on to mc_1 i want the array value with an index of 0, to change to 100 from 0 (not in terms of its index position because my array is only 4 elements long, in terms of its actual value) which i have tried to implement but i cannot configure the right code.
1. hit tests that only trigger once when they pass through the center of the object thus tracing one array.
2.use the balls 1-4 to make the array index 0, have a value of 100 if they are in contact with mc_1.

I tried adapting a bit of script from one Tonypa posted some time ago about making a hidden objects game.I want to have a movieclip play on top of a randomly selected movieclip from an array, but I don't seem to have it.Here is the hint script part.....
this._parent.hint.visible=false;
function showHint () {
var n=Math.floor(Math.random()*this._parent["object" + i].length);

I'm making a drawing application, everythings looks and works ok, except for one thing...My mouse cursor is hidden and a paintbrush like cursor follows it. This cursor is a movieclip, because the user chooses a color, and the tip of this paintbrush changes to the selected color.But there's one problem... when I draw to the left the line is drawed with no problem, but when I draw to the right, the line is interrupted, and I don't understand why.I made one experiment, and with no movieclip "attached" to the mouse cursor, the line is drawed with no problem, both to the right and left.

I'm working on a game (my first) where objects touching is A-Ok, but I want to detect overlapping collisions ahead of time, prevent them, and react. This seems like a pretty basic and common thing, such as a character walking along a platform (even though by touching it it's 'colliding'), but of all the many many collision detection tutorials I've looked at, none of them have covered this case--they all assume that objects touching should be indistinguishable from overlapping. I've been using a workaround of a slightly smaller hitbox to use for collisions, but it has issues of it's own that make it not so good. So basically I'm looking to redo my CD from scratch.
So, like I said, I'd like to know how to differentiate between 'touching' collisions and overlapping collisions, but even a way to keep touching collisions from triggering entirely would work.

In AS3 is there an easy way for collisions to take place between a moving circle and a rectangle object. A moving circle has a direction and you need to know how it collides with an object rather than knowing it just hits. In .net you use a points test where you test several points around a circle to see what hits an object and then you can work out what direction it will bounce off.

It's a small hidden menu showing on mouse over. Here is the problem: the transparent button (that enables mouse over and mouse out menu) covers my small menu so i can't click on buttons i put on it (i put buttons on frame 5 of mouse over function ).. Is there a way to click on those button while mouse over is active? Or make the button that covers my menu a kind of transparent so my menu can be clickable?

There are a lot of flash games that ask u to do repetitive actions. An example would be FarmVille or getting statistics on on-line poker game. What is the best way to create an interface between what you see on the screen, a bot's algorithm and clicking of the mouse. So basically, when I'm playing a texas hold'em on face book and if I get AA I want the bot to click all-in. If I don't get AA I want to fold. This is just an example, not the actual strategy. Or another examples would be routing tasks in farmville. So basically. It has to grab a picture of the screen. recognize patterns and convert them into an input of the algorithm. The output algorithms would be clicking on some other (may be same) patterns.

[please note this may require AS3 + Java knowledge] Background Information:
I'm trying to build a game using Java + Pulpcore, but I'm fairly new to the scene. The game I'm building could possibly be more performance intensive than I thought, and I know Java would solve my problems with this, but there are a couple questions I have dealing with strict-types, etc.

Would like to know what is the best way of designing and building a basic AS2 flash dress-up game for girls and boys.
Are there any templates one can get going with?
The flash should be able to save a snapshot at any given moment and email the snapshot to 5 or less friends.

I have researched the infamous 'Flash hogging keyboard focus' issue, but I believe our issue may involve a workaround that someone else has already come across. I've tried the various solutions I've found on stackoverflow and other sites, which I summarize below.We have a web app, and a particular interface loads several divs that we are using as "tabs". When a user clicks one of the tabs, we hide the current div and un-hide the new one. Our main tab (which is loaded when the page loads) embeds a document from Scribd, which is loaded as a Flash movie. When a user clicks on the Flash movie, they scroll with the mouse/keyboard like normal, and when they click outside of the document control returns as expected.When they navigate to another tab and then return to the original tab and click on the embedded Flash to navigate within it, the embedded Flash steals control of the mouse scroll and won't let it go. The user can click in this document and scroll with the arrow keys and then click out of the document and scroll the parent window with the arrow keys, but mouse scrolling is still bound to the embedded Flash movie. The only remedy is a hard page refresh.[code]This doesn't work -- I can confirm that the element is removed from the DOM, but when it is returned to the DOM it hogs mouse scrolling when clicked just like before.I also tried a similar solution, but instead of removing the element I called [code]

Ive got some high level questions about vector graphics. From what I understand, when you draw stuff in the Flash IDE, you are creating vector graphics. Is there any way to view the actual XML (or whatever code) that is generated 'under the hood' ? Is there any way to save the drawing as a .SVG file or something? Ive looked at a few free SVG drawing tools, but I'm wondering why not just use Flash directly, instead of creating my vector drawing in a separate program, and then trying to import it ?
Im thinking of different ways to build maps/levels for my flash game, and right now I'm thinking that building the levels out of vector shapes seems to offer the best features in terms of fast/easy collision detection, fast map creation, small level size, etc.The problem is, once I draw a level in Flash, how do I break the individual shapes apart (rectangles, lines, circles, whatever), into useable pieces I can use in the code? For example suppose I simply draw a big rectangle for a super-simple level. How do I grab the coordinates of the corners for use in my actionscript code? And how do I determine that the shape is a rectangle, and not a general polygon or just an unclosed set of lines?
For example I imagine the SVG code for a rectangle looks something like this:RECT 120, 60, 400, 500
But where can I grab that text from using actionscript, If I drew that rectangle in the flash authoring tool?

I have a game where "targets" hide behind trees and when they pop out from behind, you click them and they are destroyed. For some reason though, when you click the tree they are hiding behind, they still get destroyed. I want them to be safe from the user clicks when hiding. Here is a sample of the code I am using:
Code:
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onClickHandler, false, 0, true);
function onClickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
{
[code]....
I tried adding an else if statement like so:
Code:
else if(bullet.hitTestObject(backtrees)) {
poof.x = bullet.x;
poof.y = bullet.y;
[code]....
but that did nothing as well. As you can see, it is not the click of the user that causes the target to disappear, but the hittestobject that causes it to disappear.

I'm currently working on a game that has multiple 'scenes' located on each frame. In one scene, if you click on an object it disappears. I did this using the visible = false method. However, anytime you return the scene after, the object is visible again. How would I write the code so that it stays invisible permanently when you click it, regardless of whether or not you leave and later return to the scene?

I'm using jQuery Autocomplete just as in this example: [URL] The problem is, the area where you see the Result box in that example - that's where my flash object is. So, when the autocomplete dropdown appears, most of the text is concealed by the flash object (which I can't move). How can I make the autocomplete text appear over the flash object (concealing its view rather than vice versa)?

I'm trying to build some kind of an effect when the mouse is over. Everything was ok until I tried to reach specific movie clips that are inside other movieclips, which are not on the stage yet. the variable pageOnOn holds the movieclip that contains the thumbs(which are also.then I somehow found a way to use the function after the pageOnOn movieclip is added on the stage. (I embedded he function into the other function that is responsible for adding the pageOnOn as a child)the problem is at that line:
ActionScript Code:
thumbs.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, colorDown);
and I already checked the names in the arrays and the instance names of the movie clips, they all match.and I also tried
ActionScript Code:
this.pageOnOn.thumbs.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, colorDown);
it does not work either.
ActionScript Code:
var theArray:Array=[];
for (var c:uint = 0; c < pageOnOn.kalemTarget.length;c++) {
[code]....

I'm building a Facebook multiplayer game where the client side is in FLEX and the server side is in Java and I wanted to know if there is a guide on how to build the server clients managing system. When I say server clients managing system, I mean a server which many clients will connect to and will be able to choose between tables to join and play or to create their own table, same way as in texas holdem poker.

I am kind of new to javascript/html5. normally I would do that kind of stuff inside flash/as3. but since the iPad doesn't support that I need to switch the horse...I want to build a website where words are floating in position and size and if the mouse comes over one word it should draw some lines to all the other words. are there any frameworks one could use? the whole should look like a tag cloud with lines between the tags.

I apologize in advance -- I am new to Flash. I am triyng to build a Flash object to display images from a catalog. I would like to build something like this. I really just need some advice/direction to get started.Once I know the basics/techniques to be used, I can go from there. Is this some thing that can be done solely in Flash or will I need to use some combination of Flash & Javascript. Right now, I am thinking I can use the loader class to achieve something like this.

In TFS 2010 build, I have a new build and I want to call an ant script that builds Flash. How do I call the ant script? Also How can I compile the Flash directly? I've seen the Power Tools and this question but it doesn't help me as we don't have TFS 2008. I can't find any documentation on how to use the power tools except the 1 sentence on the bottom of download page saying to create your build the old way and import it (which isn't very helpful). I've installed the power tools on the agent computer but I don't see any new options in the Toolbox when I'm designing the build flow.

I just started working with ant a few days ago. Right now I have a general buildall.xml which should call each project's build.xml. Because some projects depend on each other, I need to rebuild some other projects which depend on it. This isn't a problem--I'm just setting the depends property of the target. However, ant is always building the dependencies, even when the files haven't changed.Let's say project1 has no dependencies; project2 depends on project1; project3 depends on project1, 2; project4 depends on project1, 2, and 3; and so on.I could hack a solution which looks at project K, and checks if project 1 .. project K have updated files using uptodate. If so, then run the target. This is messy and appears unnecessary.
What is the cleanest way to implement this?EDIT: So I decided to just hack in a bunch of targets, "check_projectK" where it does the uptodate checks on all of its source files, its build file, and the build files of the 1 .. K-1 projects. Due to dependencies, this is always handled correctly. However, this is still a large amount of copy and paste for a large workspace.

I'd like to animate a button when I put the mouse over it. I use mouse_over or roll_over events, ok. But what if I hide the button when I click it and then I show it again later without moving the mouse? The mouse stays over the button, but the button does not animate, as there is no out/over event: I have to move the mouse out and over again to see the animation.
How can I detect the mouse standing on a button without the out/over event?

Using FDT, when I have a debug configuration with several operations in the launcher chain and the final launcher opens in Flash Player, how can I retrieve the build output from the console once the build is complete and Flash player is running?
It seems that once Flash Player has started the console clears to make way for the application's trace output, but I need to be able to look back over the events and build times for each item in my launch chain while Flash Player is running. Is there a setting I can enable to either log my build output to a file or to preserve it in the console?
Edit: I know I can still read the info when building normally, this question is specifically for building with the debugger.
