ActionScript 3.0 :: Get Instance Name On Click?
Dec 21, 2009I am loading my movie clips dynamically. Is there any way I can get the instance name of a movie clip when I click on it with a mouse?

View 2 RepliesI am attempting to set a movie clip's instance name to a string variable when clicked. For example: on my stage I have many mc instances named section101, section102, etc. when I click on any specific one I'd like to get the instance name (i.e. "section101") set to a string variable. So far I have:
var sectionfocus:String = new String;
addEventListener (MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN , setfocus );addEventListener (MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP , tracefocus );
[Code].....
The buttons of my menus are mc with instance names. I want to play a click sound on each of them on rollover.
View 8 RepliesI've been learning AS3 lately and am trying to put together an interactive map. I've brought in some map data and converted it to individual movie clips, each of which has an instance name that I'd like displayed when each clip is clicked on. ideally an informational box would appear with the name of the clip and some other info that I've specified.
What do I need to script so that if one clicks on a movie clip, the instance name is displayed?
I am using a loop to add 10 shapes to the stage, then i just want to click on one at a time, in any random order and make it alpha 0, im using this code.. it gets rid of some shapes but not all. i dont get it?
Code:
var shape:MovieClip;
for (var i:Number = 0; i < 10; i++)
{

I want to create a class where when you mouse click on an instance of it, all other instances are notified about this click.
I want this functionality to be inside the class so there wll be no need to write any code outside the class definition, like assigning listeners to all instances and such.I wrote the following code but the event I dispatch doesn't get catched.
package sample{ import flash.events.EventDispatcher; import flash.events.MouseEvent; import flash.display.MovieClip; import flash.events.Event; public class labels extends MovieClip { var dispatcher:EventDispatcher = new EventDispatcher(); public function labels() { this.buttonMode = true;
[code]...
It used to happen in AS2.0 as follows :
my_Mc.onPress = function()
{
trace( this)
}
//output :
[my_Mc Movieclip]
[Code]...
I have a scrollplane instance onstage that I need to skin, but flash is not allowing me to double click the instance to edit its timeline. Does anyone know why this may be?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to delete a single line using graphics.clear() method but it clears all the instance of lines created by lineTo() method. I want to remove a single line upon click from bunch of its multiple instance.
View 2 RepliesDoes creating a new instance of an Object that uses an identical name to an older instance, delete the previous instance? Or should the original instance be deleted first? The code uses a ridiculous amount of XML vars. Isn't it less memory intensive to parse the XML and save the properties to an Object, and then delete the XML Object, rather than keep the XML Object around and reference it's child nodes directly? Is it better form to break up a huge XML file (>600lines/3200vars) into smaller chunks?
View 1 RepliesLets say i have a button on frame 1. And if you press it normal, you ll get to frame 2. But then if you click it on another way, you ll get to frame 3. How do i do that easy?! With another way i mean like shift click or ctrl click or is it an easier way?
View 3 RepliesI am trying to learn JavaScript and I am wondering whether JavaScript has a event listener just like ActionScript's ENTER_FRAME. Basically, I want this event listener to listen "all the time" not just wait for any particular instance (mouse click, keyboard event) of event.
View 3 RepliesI have a library object (SomethingMC) which extends a custom class (Something). Something, in turn, extends MovieClip.If adding SomethingMC to the stage within Flash CS3 IDE, is it possible for it's super class (Something) to assign an instance name from a class constant (Something.THE_CONSTANT)?
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;[code].....
The above does not work. It throws Error #2078: The name property of a Timeline-placed object cannot be modified. if the instance is assigned a name in the IDE, and it just doesn't work if no name is assigned in the IDE.
I have a BUNCH of bumpers of four types bounceUp, bounceDown, bounceLeft, bounceRight. during a collision which you hit determines the bounce so they always do the same thing so here's my question.....can i just name every bounceUp instance the same thing and then just add that one instance name to the list the collision detector checks?
i just dont wanna go through and name a hundred each of bounceUp s and bounceDown s individually as the potential for screaming increases proportionally.......
I placed a movie clip instance inside a button, and I want this movie clip to play when the button is released. I'm using this code on the frame containing the button:
function playMovie(event:MouseEvent)
{
this.theButton.theMC.gotoAndPlay(3);
[code].....
Does anyone know if it is possinle to scroll a graphic or a movie instance as well as a text instance in flash. I want to scroll text and images as well. Actually text with imges embedded in it.
View 3 RepliesI am wrapping my brain around OOP in AS2. I am making two posts on two different subjects. My question here is: when should I use local instance variables, and when should I attach new properties to the instance object? (Feel free to correct my terminology.) Let's say I have a class for a scrolling background, which scrolls when I mouse over its edge. I want to put these values somewhere:
1) How wide is the border in which a mouseOver makes it scroll? This is basically a semi-constant I set it up once and keep it the same, unless the user changes it in an options menu to make the border wider or narrower. Call this scrollBorderWidth.
2) How fast is the background scrolling now? I want to track this so I can smoothly change the scroll speed over several frames. This is often changed. Call this scrollSpeed.
It seems I have two ways I can store and access these values and darned if I know which is better practice. METHOD A: Make them local variables in the class, so the scrolling background instance has them as local vars. I set them up thusly:

I have a general / somewhat newbie question. Is it better practice to call a function from another class like so:
[Code]...
Does one way free up more memory or enhance performance?
I have a base class I've used on 6 different MC's. Then when I use these MC's my function runs an if statement to check which one to add.
if(id=design) var obj = new design();
if(id=team) var obj = new team();
I want to make it a bit more dynamic and use the id:String to evaluate which new instance to create.
ActionScript Code:
public function loadChapter(id:String):void {
var obj = new instance_of( id )();
}
I have a bunch of text boxes which are acting as labels on a diagram.The idea is all the labels are jumbled up to start with, and the user has to drag the labels to the correct place.So far, I have the labels, and they are dragable, but I want to be able to lock the label onto a specific area (I've called them crashzones) so that when the user drags the label onto the correct area, the label snaps into place.The 'crashzones' instance names, are indentical to the label instance names, with the exception that the 'crashzones' instance names have the letter 'z' at the begining.
On the dragStart event, something (maybe a string) would hold the instance name of the current label and add the letter 'z' to the beggining, so something like ... crashzone = "z" + label1;As there is an instance with the name "zlabel1", when the dragstop event starts, it'll do a 'hittestobject' on the instance "zlabel1".
I'm not entirely sure how to go about this.I've tried creating a string to hold the 'crashzone' name, but the hittestobject event doesnt work with strings i.e: hitTestObject(stringname);I've also tried with Sprite, but as the sprite technically already exists and has a name, I can't give the sprite any properties.
I have a base class which is being created via remote_object [RemoteClass alias] from the server.I have other specialized classes that are derived from this baseclass, but serialization with the server always happens with the base class.The base class has meta data that defines what the derived class is, for example
[RemoteClass (alias="com.myco...')]
public Class Base
{
[code]....
I am trying to communicate between an instance of flash embedded in a browser and a flash instance running in a C# WinForms app... I am getting a compile error that say:
1119 Access of possibly undefined property printOut through a reference with static type flash.net:LocalConnection
Here is the actionscript:
var feedback = "";
var receiving_lc:LocalConnection = new LocalConnection();
receiving_lc.connect("fromClient")
[code]....
on clicking the Search Icon , a search bar will be visible (ON) if user click anywhere on the stage the search bar will be NO visible(OFF) OR user click on ICON again the search bar will be OFF but it Stage CLICK is triggered without clicking

I have a button labeled 'blueButton' and I'd like to use an anonymous function to handle the click, like so:
blueButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, function(event:MouseEvent):void {
trace( "-----click detected-----" );
// now do other stuff
});
Problem is, the click handler is called multiple times per click. The number of times called seems to be random (sometimes 2, sometimes 4, sometimes 3 etc). could I be missing something in my code, or maybe I set up the button wrong?
also I noticed that it seems to always get called once on the first click. After the first click is when it starts getting called additional times, maybe that has something to do with it?
I have read all threads and can not find a solution but i am not somebody with a lots of knowledge about actionscript so here is my problem i am using this script .
[code]....
the problem is that when i click on the first button loads ok but when click on second still showing the first movie clip in the back ,,,,, i have try everything without luck ,,,, i guess i need to keep reading but will like to find an answer to this situation ,
I created a movieclip animation that only activates when i rollover the movieclip button. I further extended the frames and created another frame animation that i active only when user clicks the button. So i have a roll over/out animation and click animation in the same movieclip in the same layer. Now the problem is that when i click on the button, its supposed to take me to another page, and it does, unfortunately without the click animation. That means after i click on the button its supposed to first finish the click animation and then go to another page. But when i click, it takes me to another page without showing the click animation
SO I tried the If function, but i seem to make a mistake somewhere and i dont know what to do. Now there is no error in script, but onw there is a problem in link, the button finishes the click animation but it does not go to the tarrgeted"about" frame. here's the code
[Code]...
can i define a flash event as double click or single click
View 3 RepliesI just started playing around with as3 and I have a function for mouse clicks that draws a shape on each click. However the mouse click event does not appear to work unless I click a movieClip object I placed in the middle of the screen. Is there a way to make the mouse click event recognize when I click anywhere on the screen?
[Code]...
I want to listen both click and double click events for advanced data grid in flex. I have given double click enabled true and written the function in itemdoubleclick but only click is working but not itemdoubleclick
View 1 RepliesI would like to know how to make it so when you click a button, it goes to a different frame within a MOVIE CLIP. Kind of like gotoAndPlay but not a frame in the timeline. I would like it to move to a different frame in a movie clip.
