ActionScript 3.0 :: KeyCode And CharCode On Foreign Keyboards?
Aug 26, 2009
I thought all keyboards were alike other than maybe special Chinese and Japanese ones. I was guessing that, other than adding a few extra letters (such as Sweden's the keyboards would be identical... WRONG. find it extremely annoying typing since when I reach for a ", I get an when I want a closed curly bracket, I get ^. Swedish keyboards are not a programmer's best friend. It is quite frustrating, but that is another subject, and quite off topic.o doubt, since the key locations vary so drastically in some areas,How are "keyCode" and "charCode" values different if captured from other keyboards? How smart is Flash, and how much does the developer need to compensate for this?Is there any way to detect what type of keyboard the user is currently using?

Is there an easy way to convert keyCode to charCode?
Either this or a way to get the name of a key via it's keyCode and not it's charCode (I've made all of my movie use keyCodes so far, and I really don't want to have to convert it just to get the name of the key).I know there is a String.fromCharCode but this isn't what I need, I need one from keyCode.

I just recently switched from FLASH 8 to FLASH CS3 and noticed that by default, when working at the "Actionscript" window, I can no longer do shortcuts with keyboards. One good example is before at F8, if I want to add STOP to a keyframe, all I need to do is pre ESC then "S" and "T".

how to get the charCode from the character but I cant seem to find out how to get the character from the charcode.
Basically I am I am listening for the KeyDown event on a TextInput.
I prevent the char from being typed via event.preventDefault();
Later I need to add the text-char to the TextInput.
I can get the charCode via event.charCode so if I can turn that into a string I can save it for later user.
Why I need it
Basically I am making a TextInput, that that I can set to display default text in it. When A user types into it, I want to remove the default text first then add the user typed text.
Currently I am either removing it all, or ending up with both.

i'm looking for a way to capture key press based on the character pressed. using KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN has some problems: i can use String.fromCharCode works for letters only (and have to do capitalization manually using shiftKey boolean) but it doesn't work for other characters. the keycode for - (hyphen) is the same as for _ (underscore), for example, and fromCharCode returns the 1/2 (half) symbol.

I'm trying to embed a handful of European language characters into a little flash news ticker (Swedish, Norwegian and some others).I'm embedding my swf file in the html and passing a FlashVars variable This is the text that the ticker displays. For some reason the swf doesn't render the character when I put a foreign character such as in the HTML. I have embedded all these fonts in the dynamic text box in my .fla Attached is the .fla and .html file where you can input the text for the swf to display.
PHP Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><title>Flashvars Example</title></head> <body> <p><object width="728" height="36" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"

I have an app that generates text from the user's input (dynamic text box). The user is allowed to use Danish letters like '' (the 'a' with the ring above / å). My problem is that the top of the ring above the 'a' is cut off by the upper part of the text box. So, I want the text in the dynamic text box to move down a little. But as we all know, dynamic text cannot be vertically aligned in the properties of the text box. So, what to do?

I have an array collection set as a datagrid's dataprovider. I'm pulling content from my relational database and 2 of the columns in the grid appear as foreign keys.
How do I go about replacing the foreign key id with information from the other table?
I'm guessing I need to do some sort of: for each, but I'm really not sure how.

how to output characters from foreign languages in Flex and ActionScript.
To start, I'm just trying to output Cyrillic in a text control, but its just not working.
Ive tried BOM (Byte Order Marks) indicating UTF-8 in the XML file containing the text. I also specified "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>" in that file, and also in the actual MXML file. The actual text control is in a seperate AS3 file without a BOM, but I'm compiling everything with -actionscript-file-encoding="UTF-8".
The original cyrillic text came from an html file with a BOM indicating utf-8. I can paste that text into any html file with the same BOM and it displays correctly; take out the BOM and its garbage, so all that is needed is the correct Byte Order Mark at the start of the html file.

I have a dynamic text field that is not displaying foreign characters properly. They appear as boxes.
Here's what I've tried.
Under properties for the text field, I clicked on the embed characters button. In there, I pasted all the special characters I would need and clicked okay. Shouldn't this be enough for the text to display properly?

I have an online application that loads a variety of different languages. I have one main interface file that loads the appropriate language that is needed for the end user. These languages are being loaded from a txt file encoded using UTF - 8. Most of the languages are displayed fine in the dynamic text fields that are all embedded in Arial. The issue I have recently run into is with the French and Czech languages. In both languages the white space that follows a number is always removed. For example "20 minutes" would be displayed as "20minutes". Then in the Czech language I am also loosing spaces after certain letters, such as "a" and "v".

I have a multilingual project (currently 13 languages), which uses many different font variations of "Helvetica Neue", mostly bold, condensed and regular cuts from the LinoType Pro font set ( which includes western european characters) and the same for cyrillic. We will probably add chinese and japanese variations in the future. I have set up the project to use different CSS stylesheets and separately load the fonts for each version, depending on which language the user selects, so I can have different line heights, kerning and/or font sizes to make everything keep the original look, even if the fonts look nothing alike.
All of this works well, except for one problem: For some reason, all cyrillic letters seem to be displaced. They appear 2-3 pixels below the correct base line, and actually protrude across the textfield's bottom border, even when the field is set to autosize. When I use textfield.getCharBoundaries(), all values seem to be correct, even though they obviously aren't rendered correctly. To make everything look neat, I could of course manually move all problematic textfields up or down according to language and font size, but I was wondering if there was some way to prevent or at least detect this kind of displacement in order to automatically handle the adjustments - the Flash Player should have some sort of information on how things are rendered, shouldn't i

I have a function that needs to pass the "spacebar" keycode into an array. I'm not sure how to give the function a keycode that hasn't actually been pressed. It seems like there should be a way to do this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Is there a way to give a keycode (which is interpreted as such, rather than as a number) to a function, without that key having been pressed?

Does anyone know the greatest possible value the "keyCode" property will return?I'm mostly worried about international keyboards.I'm wanting to release a few KeyboardEvents myself using some rather nifty code (if I may say so myself) and want to make sure there are no future conflicts. Each of my "special keys" have a unique id numbered sequentially. Is there anywhere I can start my numbering from where I can be safe from conflicting key codes?
