Is it possible to send a custom event to a child?

when I click the parent, it gets click event. in the click event handler, the parent dispatches a custom event of type E. and the child is listening for E. obj.dispatchEvent() by default targets for obj it is called from. So, the event being dispatched won't reach the child if obj had one. Is there a way to send an event from parent to child? Better yet, is it possible to send an event to an object not in the DisplayList nor is a DisplayObject (the object is instanciated, but it doesn't have graphical role in the program)?

I have these buttons in a movie clip and I would like to have only one event listener for the parent, using event.target to point to the children. I have also tried event.currentTarget, and it didn't work.here is the code that works:

test01.abtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.bbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.cbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);[code]....

It is only targeting the movie clip, not the buttons inside the movie clip.

i'd like to send a dispatchEvent to a loaded swf, put into a movieclip. I found a good topic about it : as3 - dispatchEvent from a parent swf to a child swfi have a main.as
another class : submenu.as, that i import in main.aswhen i click on the "main" menu in "main.as", i would like to send a dispatchEvent to submenu.as (because i'd like the submenu to change one of its item, when i click on the "main menu" in "main.as", so i need to send a dispatchEvent to submenu.as) so i put a dispatchEvent in the method "clickButton" in my main.as : "Event.CHANGE"and in the submenu.as, i'd like to listen to this event.CHANGE, and that's what i wrote below ;-)

I'm trying to build a class for objects in my prog that can by manipulated in various ways.. I want right clicking them to send them to back, and left clicking, bring them to the front.

CS3 Send An Argument With A Tween Event?

What I want to do is to remove an item from the array targetArray when the tween hitFade has finished. I added a MOTION_FINISH event to the hitFade tween which calls the spliceTarget function. I wanted to send an argument to the function indicating the targetArray index to splice, but apparently I'm not allowed to send any argument.

how do I send the targetArray index (i) along to the spliceTarget function?

I'm guessing that I could put i into a global variable and use that in the spliceTarget function, but that seems kind of roundabout.

I am in the final stages of building my new web site: http:[url]....On most of the pages in the portfolio there is a video "Commentary" link (top right corner).Each of the commentaries are flv called up by f.ex:

Once the video is done playing, it fades to black.I would really like the flv to trigger an event to send the playhead to another frame and load another swf.I could use a pause command and let the main time line pause so many milliseconds and then proceed, but it is probably not consistent how long it takes each viewer to download the video and watch it.

I'm having an issue with an event dispatcher and an event listener. Here is the application code...

It will trace the loader.data variables but doesn't dispatch the event to the main application (Test). I'm listening for the event on the stage of the main but it doesn't trigger the event to display that the login has been successful even though it traces from the sendAndLoad class...

I came to the point where I need to communicate between 2 objects (let's say Tank and the Cannon). It is tile game, and when the Tank approach specific tile I need my Cannon to shot the Tank. When Tank gets that specific tile I want to dispatch some custom event and have listener in Cannon class body to make the shot happen. Other way I would have to check in ENTER_FRAME loop (inside Cannon body class) if the Tank touched tile that runs the Cannon shooting - but this is not elegant and efficient. The issue is complicated by the fact that the Cannon and Tank are added to the Engine (document class) and can't simply hear for each other, because they seat on the same level in display list.

Initially I could addEventListener to the Engine, but this way my document class would enlarge to the XXL size (all listeners functionality, all methods for game etc). What I would accomplish is to have event listener in every Cannon object (defined in body class) listening for Tank's dispatching the event. I saw some 'Centralized Event Manager' article in the net, but can't download full classes [url]...

I have a child swf that dispatches as custom event:

My parent swf is listening for that event.

I got a square component inside a canvas which when clicked shows a glow effect-indicating selection-while clicking somewhere else this effect is removed-indicating deselection.The problem is that the canvas always dispatches the "deselect" event, even if the mouse if over the square.I worked around this by defining a circumstantial function which removes the child's width,height from the parent's "clickable" area.Is there a better way to tell the canvas to dispatch his event only if not over the child ?

I have created a movieclip called allbuttons.swf, inside this movie i've created some movieclips by hand (button1,button2 etc..)Through the loader class (in combination with) URLRequest i managed to load the swf inside menuholder.swf but i keep getting stuck on how to manage events on buttons/movieclips inside allbuttons.swfI want to make the buttons/movieclips in side the loaded movie (child) clickable.. but i mange to fail everytime.. i litterly tried everything..- place the eventlistener in the child movie- place the eventlistener in the parent movie- adding an eventlistener to the loaded swf and tyring to catch e.currentTarget..nothing works, i don't see what i am doing wrong, probably learned some basic stuff wrong.

I have a simple 2 class game Im working on. It has a document class (BubbleBuster.AS) and a Bubble class (Bubble.AS). In the doc class I made a container sprite called bubbleContainer. I add bubbles (instances of Bubble.AS) to the bubbleContainer. When the game is over I fire a custom event in the bubbleContainer from the doc class like so:Code:bubbleContainer.dispatchEvent(new Event("gameOver"));Now I want to listen for this event in the Bubble children so I can kill tweens and remove things. I have two classes in my project - a main class and a fancyText class. In main I create a new instance of fancyText and add it to the stage. Inside fancyText there is a timer that runs and when x time is up the fancyText fades out.

I'd like to know the best way to remove the child from main when the alpha of fancyText hits zero. Should i go down the route of adding a listener to fancyText in main, and dispatching a custom event from within the fancyText class?

I guess i could just check the child's alpha value in main and remove it when the alpha it's zero. But fancyText only gets added in a certain scenario - so i can't check it all the time - which would mean doing something like this:

checkFancyText = true (assuming a boolean declared earlier)

Seems like there are a number of ways to do it - I don't suppose it's possible to remove a child from main from within fancyText class? or is that space cadet talk?
