Actionscript 3.0 :: Trace Statement Not Working In Document Class
Jan 27, 2009
I am new to actionscript and just like some of you, I would like to start off on the right foot. After several attempts to solve this problem I am now taking a break and reaching out to those in the community. I have created a .as file named Main.as and the code inside main.as is:[code]then i created a new fla file and named it testas. I then typed Main in the Document class under properties.The code has no errors and when I attempt to test the movie, there is no output to the output panel.

Is there a statement in AS3 that will return current class and/or scope? I'd like to use that in trace statements so that I know the exact location of a trace.

I'm running into an instance where I am trying to load a file 'main.swf' using the Loader class and the content of the 'evt.currentTarget.content' points to '[ object Main__Preloader__ ]'. When attemting to trace the content of the loader, I would expect the trace would show similar to '[object Main ]' since the document class for the main.swf is 'Main'. In Safari I can get the file to load and play properly (admitting through a work around) however, on Firefox for mac all that displays is some sort of 'preloader' (which I can assure you I did not create) which looks like so:
Here's the animated sequence:
oooooooooo
I will mention I am using CS5 on a mac and this file works fine when published from CS4 to FP9. I will also mention that the main.swf does contain imported assets from a RSL.

Is there a conflict with using an include statement in a frame script when you have a document class? We have an include statement in the main timeline that works fine when there is no document class. But when we add a document class we get:
"Error 1068: Unable to open included file . . . .".

I am trying to use the CSVLib from [URL].. However; when trying to use one of the examples I get an "1180: Call to a possibly undefined method addFrameScript."This is what I did.Extracted the files, then moved all FLA, AS and CSV files in the root (where also the COM folder resides). Then added the import statement to the Applicaiton file and defined document class.

I'm trying to learn OOP in AS3 and I'm hitting some roadblocks early on with a practice site I started. My fla file is in the com folder and my document class/AS is in the mywebsite folder (structured like this: com/mywebsite). I imported the images and sound and used linkage to assign their class names. My code isn't showing me any errors, but nothing is working... no sound, images, not even the trace statement in the output.
Code: Select allpackage com.mywebsite
{
import flash.display.*;
import flash.events.*;
[code]....
Besides not knowing why it isn't working as expected, Still learning and all I'm unsure about my placement of variables and addChild methods in relation to my functions.

I'm trying to make a slide-show that adjusts to the width or height of the stage, and eventually, of the web browser window. I was able to load and resize a picture by writing code on the timeline, but I got the Error #1009 (Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference) when I put this slide show into another movie clip loader (which chooses between different swf pages of the website, with the purpose of keeping the swf file sizes down). By the way, my "slide-show" loads the picture fine. When I use the movie clip loader to load this "slide-show" it works too. Only when I use the Flash Player to open it, it gives me the Error 1009. I looked around on actionscript.org, and everyone seems to be recommending the folowing code (or something like it):[code]
I also ran into some information about document classes and I figure maybe I should be using document classes to make this stuff more modular and reusable. So I put my slide-show code into an .as file, importing all the flash.xxx.* classes, and put it in a package and class and constructor function... in the same directory as my swf file, and set it as the document class to a blank fla file. Then I tested it and all I got was a blank swf. This is without the Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE code. I guess I don't know how to get the document class thingy working either. So my question is, can someone tell me how I can change my slide-show code into a working document class without the Error 1009?r?[code]

I am dispatching an event from one document class and listening for it via another document class.My code in class A.
Code:
this.dispatchEvent(new MYEvent(MyEvent.APERTURE_DONE));
trace("Dispatching APERTURE_DONE");
my code in class B.
Code:
addEventListener(MyEvent.APERTURE_DONE, onDoorsOpen,true);
trace("Lisetning for APERTURE_DONE");
[code]....
My listener is registering before the event is dispatched, based on my output window, however I never get the "Open Doors" trace statement to fire.

I have a FLA (say Main.FLA) document class with a child MovieClip on the stage: into the child MovieClip I load other swf files: each of the files contains its own Document Class (every swf is a somewhat independent application, say quizzes and so on).For some reason I must use the Main document class to store data (scores or so) from the child swfs loaded into the Main swf. HOW do I reference the Main class? I can't find a way.[code]and dispatch an Event this way from the loaded swf document class to the Main class:[code]Now, first of all I don't know if this could even work. Secondly, I tried to make it work by adding an event listener to my Main class but id did not work.

i suspect the answer here is "no", but i'm wondering if it's possible to set the color of trace statements which appear in flex's console pane. ie, i have a few "levels" of log statements, and i'd like the warnings and errors to really stand out.

Flash is returning decimal floating point formats in evaluation results under the IEEE 754-1985 format.I looked it up and this seems to be how ActionScript 3 was designed to follow that standard which creates these results.This doesn't happen in the ActionScript 2 compiler. It only happens under ActionScript 3, paste these trace statements and compile so you can see what I mean:
Code: Select alltrace(48.48 + 0.01) // returns 48.489999999999995
trace(18.48 + 0.01) // returns 18.490000000000002
this one is ok: Code: Select alltrace(18.49 + 0.01) //returns 18.5
I need a two decimal place precision result as this is for an algorithm that I'm trying to use to round up or down by a penny so I can't simply convert it to an integer but there's no pattern that I can see so I can predict results for it either.I can't have a $18.8999999999995.

Trying to get a MovieClipLoader to work for me... This code is taken pretty much right from Macromedia's Help file. I get no error messages (yay), but I also get no trace statement (boo) or loaded clip (boo2). There *is* a clip named audioplayer.swf in the same directory as my file.

I am making a jigzaw and when all the pieces are put in the right place, another movie clip will be played.All pieces are buttons placed in different movieclips. The movieclips are then placed in scene 1.
In frame 1, I've written
_global.var1=0;
In frame 2, I've put movieclip1, and in movieclip1 I've placed button1, with the following actionscript:
on (press) {
startDrag ("_root.movieclip1");
}[code]..........
However, when the piece is in the right place, and the if-statement has been activated, _global.var1 is still 0 when I trace it in frame2.

This has never happened before. One of my .fla's suddenly won't trace at all. Anywhere I put a trace statement, it does not work. On the main timeline, in an MC, in a function... nothing!
Is there an option that I could have accidentally turned off or on?
In the meantime I'm debugging with dynamic text.

In have searched the forums and can't find the appropiate answer. I do not have the "omit traces" option checked in publish settings (I use flash CS5). Here is my code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
[code]....
The creation of a movieclip works fine, but the trace doesn't. This is the main class.

Using Flash CS5 Professional I have created a symbol, dragged it onto the stage, and given it an instance name of GreenLight1. If I want to make this visible from the document class, I can simply do the GreenLight1.visible=true; and poof it's good to go when I test the file. As long as I stay in the document class I am good to go, but now I'm trying to move to another class and hitting ALL kinds of trouble just trying to get Flash to allow me to access this simple object. All I am looking to do is have this GreenLight1 go invisible (visible=false) when a certain condition occurs in this new class and Flash just won't let me access GreenLight1 at all. Things I've tried thus far:
stage is passed to the class and is referenced by _stage and is working just fine when I do _stage.addchild or anything like that. So I have tried "_stage.GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property GreenLight1 not found on flash.display.Stage and there is no default value." My document class extends Sprite, so I figured I'd try the root function. So I tried "Sprite(root).GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "1119: Access of possibly undefined property GreenLight1 through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite." I tried to create the Resource class as described therein. To which I came across the same problem that I started with in that it doesn't know what GreenLight1 is to begin with so I got "1120: Access of undefined property GreenLight1." Here is my code for Resource.as (am I supposed to pass something to this class from the document class?)

If I have a Document class that extends MovieClip, and I want to use it as the basis for another Document class, is it possible to create a subclass that extends the main document class and use that for a different FLA?
For example,
fla1.fla has a document class of MyMainClass:
public class MyMainClass extends MovieClip
fla2.fla has a document class of MySubClass:
public class MySubClass extends MyMainClass
I've tried, but now I'm getting errors that all of my variables that reference stage instances aren't being found.

Say i need to send some data from AS 3.0 to a server-side script for it to do some actions. Can I do this in a sub-class called some where in a document class or should we always do it in a document class?

Ok, this is one of those walls that I know once I can jump over it, I will be a much happier developer again.
I've done tons of reading, and think I have a firm understanding that the general consensus is that if you want to reference something, it needs to be added to the display list, using addChild().
I hate to be defiant, but what if I don't want to?
Or at the very least, what if I want to add a movieclip class to the stage using addChild, and then reference objects inside it?
It is much easier this way than what most people recommend - adding 15 objects via addChild, then setting the x and y for the, etc.
That said, I'm all about using classes and using as3 the way it was meant to be used. So what this is, is a best practices question I guess.
HERE ARE THE STEPS I'M TRYING:
- Create new flash document
- Draw graphic symbol bg, with text field over it, select them, convert to movieclip symbol, and export class name "box", then delete it from stage
- Add document class .as file, which simply adds that class "box" from the library, to the display list using a simple addChild()
- Set a name for that box using box.name = "test" let's say
- Do a simple trace like the following - "getChildByName('test').textFieldName" - it shows up great
- So then, I'll now try to set the text by doing this - getChildByName('test').textFieldName.text = "yo";
That last line above, is what doesn't work. I know I'm referencing wrong, but how would a pro as3 developer, reference something on the stage within a movieclip class, from the document class?
