Flex :: ComboBox - How To Set Characters To Have Same Width

I am simulating a multi-column combobox by introducing spaces between each column, such that all rows for the 3 columns should appear in a single line. The gap in this implementation is that due to the varying widths of characters, this spacing technique does not work. How to set the combobox characters to have the same width? The other approach is to calculate the width occupied by characters in each column and then set the start position of the next column. How to achieve this?

In Flex 3, I've created a ComboBox within an MXML component similar to the following:
<mx:ComboBox id="comboBox" dataProvider="{_choices}" />

In the parent MXML application, I'm modifying the contents of the choices property:
myComponentId.choices.removeAll();
myComponentId.choices.addItem({data: "NY", label: "New York"});
myComponentId.choices.addItem({data: "CA", label: "California"});
// etc...
The binding is working in that the ComboBox is automatically picking up the new contents added at runtime, however it is not adjusting its width. The initial width of the ComboBox is wide enough only to show the initial item "All" declared in the component. However, I want and would have expected the ComboBox to re-size automatically during binding to be able to show "California", but it isn't. How can I get the ComboBox to update its width after I have added new wider labels to its dataProvider?

I've created a ComboBox skin by extending mx.skins.ProgrammaticSkin. It's working fine, except I can't figure out how to limit the width of the text. Is there a way to control this within the skin?
See the attached image for an example of the text going too far. I would like it to stop before the separator line to the left of the down arrow.

My mx:Text's htmlText is the following:
mainText.htmlText = "<img src="breadmaker.png" width="339" height="275" vspace="0" hspace="0" />" + "Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy tex......(more here)"
However, the result looks like the following:ScreenshotAs you can tell, it cuts off the first few characters in the text after the image tag (Lorem Ipsum is sim), but it is only because the image is full width. If I change the img tag to width="200", it shows the text floating to the right.However, as you can tell with a full width image (because the Text component's width is 339), it seems the text is still floating to the right, but it's hidden off to the right side of the image.

I have searched high and low on this one and there are many different answers and suggestions.I am loading my text in via XML. I have made sure that it is UTF8 encoded.For any other dynamic text I would simply embed the characters I need.
So far I can change the colour and the size of the text in the combobox but just can't seem to figure out how to embed the french characters I need in there.I have created my own font and embedded the characters I need into a dynamic text field on the stage. The created font is named "appfont"

I am trying to change width of ComboBox instance. I want to change width of the original box, not the list. List width can be changed with inst.dropdownWidth=myWidth; ComboBox width can be changed by free transforming in Flash IDE, but that is not exactly ideal. There should be a code solution for this (I hope). Anyone know or know where to find out? I could not find it in the documentation strangely enough (or maybe I just missed smtg obvious).

I'm trying to set a specific list item in a mx combobox to have a custom item renderer, the problem is that I cannot do this via mxml, it needs to be done via actionscript at a later stage, eg: combobox gets created, combobox gets populated, user does other tasks, combobox needs to set one or more items in the combobox to have icons (via item renderer)..
I can do this via the onChange event, but it only applies the icon when the combobox is opened and there is a slight delay so you can see the icon being added.

I am creating a nav in flex that pulls in buttons dynamically from xml. THe problem i am having is setting the button width to the text width. currently the buttons are all the same width and if the text is larger then it just cuts off. Once I've set either the width or percentWidth property on a flex label, is there a way to reset the width to its default (i.e., the width of the text plus padding)? I'm using the label as a renderer. In some cases, I'd like it to automatically size to the text, and in other cases, I'd like it to be a percentage width of its container. Obviously, I could use two separate labels, one for each of the above cases, but I'm curious if it's possible to reset the label to its default behavior.

I'm trying to setup a DataGrid that contains a column of combo boxes. The values of the combo boxes are defined by data specific to that row. I cannot get this to work though, I'm asking for a solution to this, either fixing what I have below or a recommendation on a different way.One of the columns of my DataGrid has an object derived from a ComboBox for an ItemEditor. 1) Each field in the form only allows 3 characters and no special characters such as @ _ ! . , etc... 2) When the user goes to the next field in the form, the previous field appears blank but the when clicking on that again, the original text appears. 3) When submitting the form, it just keeps saying "in progress" and never shows the confirmation text nor does the email get sent. There is an HTML file included with this form but I am not sure if I need to put that in as I have embedded this form into an SWF file so I don't think I need that code but let me know if I am wrong about this. I am posting both the AS code and PHP code below..

I'm using Flash CS3 and want to create a custom ComboBox. I've followed the steps outlined in "Editing component skins in a new document" (http:/[url]...), but every time I get to the step where I drag the ComboBox Assets folder from the HaloTheme.fla library into my library, if I test movie at that point my combobox has become an unclickable white rectangle with no label, button or anything.

I am working on a Flex app that has a MySQL database. Data is retrieved from the DB using PHP then I am using AMFPHP to pass the data on to FlexThe problem that I am having is that the data is being copied from Word documents which sometimes result in some of the more unusual characters are not displaying properly. For example, Word uses different characters for starting and ending double quotes instead of just " (the standard double quotes). Another example is the long dash instead of -.All of these characters result in one or more accented capital A characters appearing instead. Not only that, each time the document is saved, the characters are replaced again resulting in an ever-increasing number of these accented A's appearing.
Doing a search and replace for each troublesome character to swap it for one of the none characters seems to work but obviously this requires compiling a list of all the characters that may appear and means there is scope for this continuing as new characters are used for the first time. It also seems like a bit of a brute force way of getting round the problem rather than a proper solution.Does anyone know what causes this and have any good workarounds / fixes? I have had similar problems when using utf-8 characters in html documents that aren't set to use utf-8. Is this the same thing and if so, how do I get flex to use utf-8?

what's the easiest way to cut string in Flex ?I mean, I have a sequence of urls, I want them at most 60 characters length. If they are longer they should be cut and "..." should be added at the end.

Any way to get the exact position for every character inside a textflow?, also I'm having trouble with the TLF documentation, is there anny documentation that shows more on how to work with it in actionscript rather than mxml, I am looking to write my own component and perhaps not use richtexteditor if I don't need to. How to get each characters position in the textflow:

I have a data grid that has ComboBoxes in two of its columns.
What I need to do is get the values of those bombo boxes when a user highlights the row of the grid NOT when the user uses the comboBox. I understand how to pull the values out once the change handler is invoked on the comboBox, but I'm not seeing a way to get at the comboBoxes that belong to the currently highlighted gridRow.
I'm sure it's really straight forward, but I'm just not able to find any reference on how it's done.
