JWplayer Image Fallback If No Html5 Or Flash Support?
Oct 14, 2011
I'm using JWPlayer to serve an html5 video with a flash fallback.I'd also like to have an image fallback if there is neither html5 nor flash support but I can't see how to do this.
My code is as follows:
modes: [
{ type: "html5", },
{ type: "flash", src="http://www.mysite.com/jwplayer/player.swf"}
],

I read about a project that enables the developer to program a HTML5 web sockets application that is compatible with older browsers by automatically falling back to using a flash method.

I told my boss to use HTML5 with a fallback on FLASH.But he said he wants FLASH as the first option, and if the browser (ipad or any other) can't recognize the FLASH , it should play the MP4 file we got. I suggested HTML5 with fallback on Flash. But he wants the opposite.
Using SWFObject (google it) and a SWF Controller (like FlashMediaPlayback.swf).It's very important to understand that the iPad has limitations with video size. So the MP4 file can't be bigger than 720p and 160kbps for audio.
<div style="text-align:center" >
<script type="text/javascript" src="swfobject.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var flashvars = {};

I'm trying to have a flash video, with fallback to the html5 video element for those browsers which don't support flash, such as iPhone. I'd also like to have valid html5. The issue I see is that in html5, object doesn't support the classid attribute anymore, but this would be required for a user to get flash if they don't have it but want it.
It seems my options are to accept invalid html5 but not have the flash work properly, or have the classid and not have valid html5.

I'm doing Html5 video play on my project with flash fallback (if it doesn't support html5). But both players are loaded if browser supports both.
<video controls="controls" preload="auto" poster="image.url" >
<source src="video.url" type="video/ogg" />
<source src="video.url" type='video/mp4; codecs="avc1.42E01E, mp4a.40.2"'/>

I'm just trying to understand how once HTML5 enters the picture, the current concerns about browser incompatibility and other issues go away? Wouldn't HTML5 simply add another set of browsers to the large list of current browsers that the application must target?
That is, assuming the enterprise web app requires one of these new HTML5 features (e.g. playing audio and/or video, integrating SVG or vector graphics, etc.). If such a feature isn't critical then graceful degradation may be acceptable and then my question is moot.
But for those apps that require one of these new HTML5 features, are you planning to support older browsers, or expecting it's acceptable to restrict to HTML5 browsers because the enterprise in question has made one of them their new corporate standard (or other scenario, etc.)?

I'm looking for javascript libraries and code that can simulate localStorage on browsers that do not have native support.Basically, I'd like to code my site using localStorage to store data and know that it will still work on browsers that don't natively support it. This would mean a library would detect if window.localStorage exists and use it if it does. If it doesn't exist, then it would create some sort of fallback method of local storage, by creating its own implementation in the window.localStorage namespace.I understand that Flash and Silverlight can be used for local storage as well, but haven't found anything on using them as a fallback for standard HTML5 localStorage. Perhaps Google Gears has this capability too?Please share any related libraries, resources, or code snippets that you've found! I'd be especially interested in pure javascript or jquery-based solutions, but am guessing that is unlikely.

I need a audio and videoplayer that is usable both in non flash-browsers (such as iphone-safari) and in non html5-video-enabled browser (such as all old browsers)Apart from this clean asthetics(think vimeo), support for many codec-types and easyness to implement are all bonuses.

Looking into HTML5 video tag, and researching which browsers support which video file types, and my initial thought is things just got harder than just using flash. I am wondering if there is some skeleton code (combined with development approach for videos) that someone has figured out to do the following: If flash is available, use it If not, try html5 video ogg format If that doesn't work, try html5 video h.264 format If that doesn't work, try html5 video webM format Based on what I am seeing, am I correct in thinking that now, in order to accommodate all users on all browsers, a video needs to be published in 4 formats? If so, this HTML5 video thing is an epic fail!

I have the following code to display the swf object on the page. It works well in all browsers. However, if shockwave flash turned off in Firefox, it won't fallback into image and show bunch of characters instead looking like "CWS..." All other browsers fallback to the image. I verified that we serve application/x-shockwave-flash MIME type on our server.

Almost every flash player has an option to display how much of buffer (or % of total video) is downloaded to the client. At the moment I don't see it in any implementation of html5 video player.
The real problem I am trying to solve is to have a way of knowing % of downloaded asset (image/swf/video whatever). In flash its easy by using MovieClipLoader and bytesLoaded property.
Is there any way of doing it in HTML/HTML5/Javascript (without relying on Flash) ?

I would love to get some information from some of the old pros on here as to best practices using flash for large scale environmental displays:
1. Flash supports High Definition correct? I did a google search, and see that it does - but unsure whether I need a plug-in or it's just a setting? My question is more along the lines of - can the flash animation be highDef, or only the videos it displays?
2. I am working on a very large (like 40ft tall) environmental graphic, and curious .how you deal with images at that size? I remember vaugely, that they don't need to be 300dpi, but do i still need to maintain a certain resolution?

The player loads a flv video file seeon.flv from another domain.Currently, even without a crossdomain.xml in the server where seeon.flv is located, the video is loaded fine.This is not the behavior I want or expect it to be.I also tried putting a crossdomain.xml with the following content:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE cross-domain-policy SYSTEM
"http://www.adobe.com/xml/dtds/cross-domain-policy.dtd">
<cross-domain-policy>
<site-control permitted-cross-domain-policies="none"/>
</cross-domain-policy>
From firebug, I could see that there's a request to the crossdomain.xml before accessing the video file (seeon.flv).It returns the content fine , with the Content-type of application/xml, but it still allow the cross domain behavior.

Here is the code i use to embed:
<script type="text/javascript" src="/Frontend/Javascript/swfobject.js"></script>
<div id="mediaspace"><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash"

I've got a Flash video that takes a very long time (30 seconds+) to load, which is obviously frustrating for users. I'm using the JWPlayer to embed the video.Flash experts (which is not me), what am I doing wrong? Or is the video file too big/server too slow? I've tried embedding in various ways (direct embed, swfobject) without change.I notice it does sometimes play right away on load, but I'm not sure if this is because at that time, the Flash video is cached in my browser.

I found this awesome example: [URL], or an HTML5 WebSocket echo server in Jetty, and I love it's simplicity. However, the web app I am developing will require a bit more cross-browser compatibility, so I tried to use: [URL] as a Flash fallback. The problem: I need to serve some XML file on port 843 for Flash. Now I am new to both Flash and Jetty, and would like to figure out how to accomplish this. I have used HTML5 WebSockets before in PHP, Python, and Ruby, and I have the echo server working perfectly on my Mac, but now I need to configure Jetty to send the file.

I'm using VideoJs to handle my HTML5 video needs, using a single M4V. I needed a playlist, and I'm able to change it's source easily using JS (in my case, jQuery). However, I'm not able to pass these changes along to the flash fallback (which is achieved via an object including flowplayer). How one might be able to dynamically change flowplayer's flashvars, and reload the object?

I'm trying to add mediaelement.js to my site to present a single player for any MP3 link on a particular page. The design is working fine for IE 9 and Chrome 11 (which have HTML5 MP3 support), but it has an issue with the flash fallback on Opera 11 and FireFox 4. Clicking any MP3 link on the page uses the .setSrc() method of media element player to change the source of the player, but in Opera and FF, the first time this method is called, it returns error "this.media.setSrc is not a function". Any call to the function after that works fine.
Another issue is after the element containing the player is hidden "display:none" and then displayed again, calling the .pause() function will produce error "this.pluginApi.pauseMedia is not a function". After that error is thrown, subsequent calls work fine until the element is hidden and displayed again.

In my application I'm using a custom embedded font for English (Helvetica New) which does not contain characters (glyphs) for chinese unicode range. In the application, wherver chinese characters are avaiable they are not displayed (suppressed) since they are missing in the custom embedded font. How can I make the flash player to use a fallback system font for the missing characters? And the fallback should be for the missing characters alone. For the Engligh characters it should use the embedded font.
