View 7 RepliesI am stumped as to how to use an animated symbol repeatedly in a timeline while being able to alter its visual qualities without breaking the animation motion.I make a simple 3-layer animation of a body with two legs doing a walk cycle in place.I convert the completed animation as a new graphic symbol in the library.
I can then drag copies of that animated symbol to different timeline layers and alter their overall scales or give them each additional motions with a motion tween so various versions of it can move across the stage independently with tweens while keeping the walk cycle movements of the symbol.
I can change the colour properties of the added symbols but this only affects the whole image, so if the object had a body and legs in different colours, altering the properties changes all of the body parts to the same colour.Doing this does preserve the walk cycle motion, but the new object looks crude because it has become all one colour.I can then alter the visual properties of the components individually, but then it loses its animation motion.Whether I just group it again or convert it to a new symbol, it has lost the animation motion (the walk cycle of the legs) of the original. how to make such an animated symbol so that I can reuse it in the timeline while changing its visual properties (so it looks like a different character in the story) and yet keep its original animation motion.I have tried to duplicate the symbol and to copy and paste the motion but nothing seems to work.
I'm working with Flash Builder 4.6 as an IDE and Flash CS5.5 to create library items. The problem is - when I put an instance of a library item on the stage or inside of another item, Flash Builder fails to detect the instance name that was declared in Flash CS. This doesn't prevent the code from compiling just fine though.
I understand that the IDE only sees the fields that I have declared directly in the .as file, but it really hinders me that I the IDE goes crazy when I do this.
Is there any way to circumvent this - other than dynamically creating and placing the instances?
In my library I have:A Sprite named Emily of base-class "Character" with a sub-sprite labeled "head" of auto-generated Class "EmilyHead".A Sprite named Jess of base-class "Character" witha sub-sprite labeled "head" of auto-generated Class "JessHead".
Flash compiles with the following warning: Warning: All instances named 'head' will be automatically declared as JessHead in symbols that use Character as their base class. In symbols that are linked to user-defined base classes, instances with the same name must be of the same type. And then the runtime error:TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert EmilyHead@3a0d1e81 to JessHead. at flash.display::Sprite/constructChildren() at flash.display::Sprite()at Character() I can turn of auto-declare stage instances in the Actionscript 3 panel, but then I have to manually add a public var for all sub-child's, such as the head sprite. But then at least everything works as expected. This is more setup than I'd prefer to do, but everything else about this workflow is very fast & easy. What can I do to sidestep this error, while keeping the same workflow?

I'm attempting to use CS4 (PC/Vista, if that matters) to create a SWF file that will basically act as a "library" of commonly used symbols. This SWF would be loaded at runtime by other SWFs, which could then use the symbols within it, including all art and code assets.

I am using CS3 / AS2 and was wondering if it was possible to load a movie into a symbol, not just an instance of that symbol, from the main timeline. I tried exporting the symbol for actionscript then using loadMovie but I suspect that is not the correct way to go about this.

I've built a flash application on which I've created a webservice client to consume a dotnet service. when the full domain ex: www.yourdomain.com is used to load the site (primarily html and asp.net code with just a flash client) everything is fine. If I load the website using just... yourdomain (no www) then the flash interface activates but never returns a response. I've tried loading a cross domain policy file to see if that could be the issue to no avail. So far no www flash bugs are turning up as a common issue on Google, maybe I'm not using the right key words?
View 1 Repliesi'm fresh to using flash cs5. everything works smoothly,but i can't use type1 fonts (even though they work ok in flash cs3, and also, all the other types of fonts work fine).if i use a type1 font, the textfield (both render in the final swf, as well as on the stage) appears in some default font.

Something is corrupt with my Flash Professional CS5 Actionscript Auto format: Comments within a block, such as ' // ' or block comments ' /* ... */ ' are tripping up the Auto Formattor, which returns this error: ' Error with autoformat near line: }'. Comments before package block don't cause an error. When I remove comments within package block, Auto format works correctly.
View 2 RepliesI'm creating a game-engine, which will add objects to itself as symbols, and I want to be able to choose how they are "layered". For example, say I decide to model things in a type of 3D, and the Z co-ordinate is used for depth (distance from front), how would I translate this into an object 1 unit away rendering in front of an object rendering 2 units away? The engine programming I've done fine in terms of calculating the values etc., as I have a strong javascript background so that was the easy what with actionscript's neat OO syntax, but getting it to do things visually is a bit problematic know, heh. So far all I've really managed is a nice little loading bar, which isn't really that hard =D
Also, the symbols I create are actually going to be comprised of multiple parts; a base-layer, a detail-layer, and a colour-layer. What is the easiest way to do this? Ideally I'd create the symbol with multiple layers of its own, and simply toggle the detail and colour-layers on/off as required, and tint the colour-layer independently of the rest of the symbol. Is this possible? Or will I need to use multiple symbols and move them in tandem myself?
I have a list of 700 words that I would like to convert to symbols in Flash for a flash card game. I'm trying to make a game where a random symbol from a slice of the array of symbols will come into game play until the user performs an action.Basically, I'm wondering how I can create an arrayed/indexed library of symbols from a dictionary, for a downloadable Flash game. Does anyone know how I could start to script this? Also, if I want to pair a 'word symbol' with its translation, do I need to use a database? Obviously, because it's a flash-card type game I'm working on, the translated symbol is just as valuable as the original-language symbol.
View 1 RepliesMy game is rather dependant on dynamic text fields, for giving players in game hints, signalling to them how far they've progressed (round/wave), how many points they've scored for destroying an enemy ect.
It's come to my attention that, the game lags whenever I update these dynamic text boxes. This happens particularly with the in game messages, (black glow filter) that fade in and out. Without any dynamic text messages at all, the game seems to run fine even on battery saving mode/slow computers.
Is there anyway to keep the dynamic text and get rid of the lag? I think I've tried all the different options for the textfields (I'm using CS4):Character Embedding Bitmap/Antialiazed text (Bitmap works slightly better) Multiline/single line Non selectable [URL]..
I've been working on a uni project. Basically, enemies are placed on the screen using a timer variable and using the attachMovie to put them on the screen. This is an example of the code I'm using:

This works and places them on the screen, (and into the array) but by putting them into the array, I thought that each one would be a unique instance of the movieclip which doesn't always seem to be the case. If I shoot one of the enemies, sometimes another enemy will explode (or both of them) and other times I will knock into one enemy and another one will be the one who get's knocked.
For my collision code I'm using this:

The explosion code also uses a similar for loop. Should I look at another method to place unique instances of the enemies on the screen?
When I open a document in Flash CS5.5 that was created in CS5, for some reason the buttons appear invisible when the document is published.
Buttons are also appearing invisible when they have been brought in from the library of another CS5.5 file.
I used this tut to create a menu. [URL] And my question is; Can I make the slider to move after a movie clip symbols instead of button symbols? That way my menu would be animated.
View 1 RepliesI'm working through a book called Foundation Game Design with Flash, and I'm finding the Flash IDE confusing. I've been programming for several years, so working with AS3 directly is far easier than trying to understand symbols and nested symbols and the difference between graphics and movie clips and scoping issues and all that -- when tied into the IDE.
How many of you who are making games in AS3 also use the Flash IDE? Can anyone recommend a resource that is AS3 heavy and Flash IDE light? I don't care how much time I may or may not save by using things like the timeline, I just want to understand what I'm using.
Is there any way to do that, well bone tool is for AS3 only.. so how would you connect symbols with other symbols?

The animator said that he has created two symbols: one for the body, and another symbol inside the body symbol for the head.What I don't understand is how he translated the layers over into the head symbol. When I click on the head symbol, all of the layers disappear and I cannot edit an object individually within a layer.
when I enter a symbol by default everything around that is not part of that symbol becomes faded - is there a way to disable this?
View 4 RepliesIn CS5, I want to create a simple series of still images that display in the Timeline for about 5 seconds each. Is there an easy way to do either of the following:
1. Change the Timeline to display in seconds instead of frames?
2. Specify how long something should appear prior to the next symbol showing up in the Timeline?
I have an .fla I created a while ago. In it is a movie clip in my library which I now want to use in a new .fla. This movie clip is reliant however on an image which is also in the library. I have tried selected both the image and movie clip, copy them, and paste them into my new library, but this doesnt work. I have tried cutting... I have tried duplicating and copying the duplicate. Nothing seems to work. Is there anyway of getting a symbol from one library into another?
View 3 Repliesi am using CS4 on a PC, and I have created my motion guide layers as I normally do, created a path, but when I scrub the playhead, the symbol just goes from point A to point B without follwing my guide. Also they are not snapping to the guide. I have not done a motion guide in a while, what am I missing here. Also where is the pallete to turn on object orienting?

My flash movie is displayed in 9 regional languages and hence I have used TLF text for Flash Movie which easily displays Unicode text.SWF displays text properly when i publish it. but once i view the same SWF in Internet Explorer or any other browser it does not display text in those buttons.
