Professional :: "The DisplayObject's Filtered Dimensions Are Too Large To Be Drawn"
Feb 17, 2010
I'm editing a site which runs flash. I can click through the entire site without issues in Internet Explorer 5 and 6. In newer versions of IE, Firefox, Chrome and Opera, I have issues playing any video. The site is designed in a way that you click from page to page (topic to topic) and "click to enlarge" objects. PDF files and jpg's work fine. When you click on two FLV videos the enlarged window pops up but the player does not open and the video does not play. When I open this file in Flash Pro try opening these video I get a message stating "The DisplayObject's filtered dimensions are too large to be drawn." I know the site works, but I believe the flash file is calling something not compatible with current browsers.

As you probably already know, when accessing the width property of a rotated displayobject it returns the width of the bounding box. I instead need the width of the actual displayobject (essentially, the width of the bounding box when the displayobject is not rotated).[code]

I'm trying to make a program that's meant for graphics tablets in AS3. So far I can allow the user to draw a line across the stage so that they know where their moving their pen around. However I want this line to only be temporary, and so the graphics.Clear() method is called to remove it.
I'd like this to look a lot better however, as the line just instantly disappears. Does anyone know how I could add code that makes the line fade out to 0 alpha first before I call the clear command?

I draw a shape with the pen tool in Flash CS4. I made sure the shape was closed. But, I cannot fill the shape no matter what. Paint bucket tool does not work. Whatever I do, I get the red diagonal line on the fill color. I can fill a shape with the rectangle or oval tools but not the pen tool.

I'm trying to learn Flash CS5, but having a bit of trouble with the basics. I start a new actionscript3 project and, whenever I try to draw anything, no matter what I select, it always comes out as a plain, green outline. For example, say I want to draw a red, dotted circle It should look something like this, but it will always come out like this

The more I work with this program, the more weird stuff I encounter. I set up my .fla file as 700 x 400. I've been putting stuff on the stage and adding tweens, then when I test the movie, part of the stage image is cut off. I turned on the ruler, and found that the top of my stage is aligned at X 0.00 and Y -44.50. I drew a box the size of the entire stage, and its position is X 0.00 and Y -44.50, and the dimensions are 700 x 469. Can anyone tell me why my stage is larger than 700 x 400, and how to get the top left corner of the stage to be aligned at X 0.00 and Y 0.00?

For an e-learning presentation, what is the standard size the Flash stage should be set to nowadays? Is there a trend as to a specific standard size that everyone is using? This will be embedded / placed / inserted within a .ASP page.If standard interactive actionScript and animations, should I stick with SWF file format?

I have to create a demo loop that will play on a 32" TV at a convention center booth. This .swf will also be repurposed on a webpage after the convention. What's the best pixel dimension to create the flash stage? If I create it at 1024 x 768 to fit safely within a browser, any idea how it will look when viewed on a TV? Will it look distorted? How do I compensate for fact that the TV may be 1080p or it may be 720.... and still have it work on a typical web page?

I would like to be able to quickly check if a given DisplayObject is a descendant (not in the inheritance sense - ie. child, grandchild, great-grandchild, great-great-grandchild, etc.) of another DisplayObject. There doesn't seem to be a native way to do this and I can only think of two ways to achieve it: Create the mother of all nested loops. Seems a bit, I dunno, wrong? Dispatch a bubbling event at the 'child' and check if the potential 'parent' receives it.

I have a big ArrayCollection variable. I want to filter it serveral times and each time assign the filtered result to a different ArrayCollection variable.
So if it has let's say people, fruits and cars. (for illustration purposes) I want to first filter it to only show people, assign the result to a people ArrayCollection, then filter it to show fruits and assign it to a fruits ArrayCollection and so on.
How can I do that? Not the filtering, but the assignment after filtering. Or is it faster to instead run a for-loop through the big ArrayCollection and just add each item into the corresponding smaller ArrayCollection?

I am working in Flex. I have an arraycollection which is used to fill a tilelist with images. I am using filter method of arraycollection to filter out certain images from tilelist based on a selected value from combobox. The issue is that when the images are filtered out they just vanish suddenly. But I want to give some effect to them when they are filtered out, say slow fade effect or zoom effect. I tried removedEffect, hideEffect etc. but in vain.

I have data model (dataProvider as ArrayCollection) i want to display in few views , each view should show filtered data. As you probably know, filterFunction is property of ArrayCollection,so I can't use this solution (unless creating new instance of ArrayCollection for each view on top original and impementing filterFunction).

I have a Flex 4 app with an external ItemRenderer inside of a DataGroup for a repeating form. The DataGroup dataprovider is an ArrayCollection (coll_sites). In the documentParent I have a trio of comboBoxes (Status, Year, Area) that trigger a filter function that operates directly on coll_sites.The itemRenderer has a series of textInputs and comboBoxes. Three of these comboBoxes are tied to fields in coll_sites (again, Status, Year and Area) that are filtered by the aforementioned parentDocument comboBoxes. The problem I am having is that in the itemRenderer when the field is one of the filtered ones, the itemRenderer ComboBox will not close. If it's not filtered, there is no problem. I have confirmed that the problem ComboBox updates the ArrayCollection appropriately, it just won't close unless another Item in the dropdown is selected.[code]In the ItemRenderer code above, the ComboBox for STATUS works exactly as it should but YEAR stays open after changing. In my full code, I have three such filtered fields and all three behave exactly the same. The other six fields which are not filtered, close appropriately.

I'm on a macbook pro, osx 10.6, using CS4 Web Premium. I used to have an external monitor hooked up which had much higher resolution, so when using Adobe Media Encoder I'd click the Settings button on a video to get the Export Settings window, then stretched the Export Settings window to be the size of my external monitor. Now, I'm just using my laptop, and the export settings window does not have the resize buttons at top left to adjust it back to the size of my laptop, and the bottom third of the export settings window is getting cut off so I can't see the cancel/ok buttons etc.
I've tried re-installing media encoder (via reinstalling flash using the CDs) to try to 'reset' the window sizes, didn't fix the problem. If anyone knows of any other preferences or something I could delete to fix this,

how do you merge data (coming repeatedly from server) into a filtered ArrayCollection?
The TestCase.mxml (just place it into a Flash Builder 4.6 project):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application
xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark">
[code]....
The problem lies in the fact, that when the ArrayCollection _data is filtered (because the Checkbox "Even" is set), then the 2nd loop in the test case (for adding new items) adds items (the "35") again and again - because it's filtered and thus not visible.

I am trying to create a web site suing adobe Dreamweaver and flash, for the first time.I am trying to upload a webpage that contains swf. When I check mu site I could only see a blank page with the webpage title at the top of the page. When I contacted the webhosting company they say they can see the message that a newer version of adobe flash player is required. From my computer I cannot even see the message. The helpdesk person said there are possibly two reasons for it. Either there is a problem with the code in flash or it is too large. Are they too large to upload? If so, what is the maximum size of file can I upload on a webpage?I know they are basic questions but I am trying to create website on my own.

I am preparing a navigation (using panning) movie in Flash. There is very big (6000x4000) image (area photo from top) on the stage and it's position moves once user moves his mouse. Thus, user can navigate on the area. But flash really drives me insane while working on this movie. It usually suddenly stops and quits with error.I'd like to ask what can i do? should i use a different method???It seems, Adobe becomes stupid on large files and there are bugs in somewhere Flash. For example; how can i use a method like Google Maps (it loads an another image when you move another position. Not loads all images together and doesnt consumpt large amount of resources.)?

I found this bug in Flash 8, so I just downloaded CS5.5 trial and I see the same problem. When I increase the image export resolution to get a larger image, at one point the lower section of the image became white (the image has the appropriate size but the content is not rendered in the lower section). As bigger is the image, larger is the white fraction. The amount of useful pixels always stay around 10 or 13 megapixels. Here some examples:Original image was 3375x6710 pixels in the left one and 2625x5219 en the right one.

I have brush off my Flash skills. Usualy I work in FW but now I have to create a banner in various large sizes but with very limited file size so I turn to Flash. My animation needs are very modest: moving ease in/out, rotate back forth and maybe a fade. Have any of you guys have some tips&trix for getting as much (simple) animation with keeping a small file size? Or point me to some tutorials?

I have one that's almost done and the stage size is 700x800 px. But I'm starting to worry if that's going to look too small? To change it, will be a lot of work - there's animation, imported Jpegs etc. As far as I can tell, in order for it to look correct in larger dimensions I will need to basically create it again from the ground up. So, I'd really like to get an idea of what the optimal pixel dimensions would be for ecards to run on multiple platforms.
I really want to do this and I don't feel like I can move ahead until I get the viewing size correct. I don't even mind redoing the card. I just want my future cards to be the correct size. I don't want to have to come back and redo them all. By the way, the cards are being made in Flash. The site itself will be created in DreamWeaver.
