I'm a developer on nice space MMO using Flash. On new PCs performance is quite good, but some features shouldn't be enabled on older PCs because the framerate drops to shit if we do. Flash wasn't made for this, but hey, pushing boundaries is fun.
An example is fullscreen mode. Of course every user can manually enable it, but "advertising" it to a user with and oldie PC would be a bad idea - but for the Alienware crowd it would be dumb not to.
So I want to find out how "capable" a user's PC is to decide if I should enable or disable some features for him.
I need to create a internet speed test application in Actionscript 3.0, like Speed Test. I need to calculate:
1. Download speed
2. Upload speed
3. Latency (Round Trip Time)
4. Jitter
5. Packet loss
6. Network availability
I get a working application in Flash made that lets the user click to create blocks which subsequently gravitate towards the mouse. I made the exact same thing in Processing too, just to compare speeds.However, when I run the Flash version and add around 15-20 blocks, the framerate drops to 5-10 FPS.In the Processing version I can add ~60 with no noticeable slowdown. What's the deal, Flash?

this is what i'm trying to accomplish; With a click on a movieclip (cannon_mc)a shot is being fired (ball_mc)
The longer mouse is down, the speed of wich the ball is fired with should increase.My question to you is;
What is the most efficient way to accomplish this? With a timer or something like this;

I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.
I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.
I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?
Will I take a big hit in performance using nested ViewStacks? Should I strive to handle all navigation in one ViewStack and push children manually or will the affected performance be negligible?

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?
View 1 RepliesI'm using swfobject to load a flash object on my site and it's loading very slowly on pages with a lot of data...as if swfobject waits until the page loads before loading the swf. Here's an example page with swfobject: [URL] If I change out the swfobject code with an iframe (with the swf as the src) or just use object embed, the flash object loads much, much faster...before the rest of the page loads.
I know there are a ton of page load time improvements I could make to that page (I'm working on that as well), but I'm wondering if there are some specific changes I could make to the way I'm using swfobject to get the same loading speed as an iframe or object embed?

The code all works fine, although is probably quite messy, in the test movie environment within flash but when i publish or export the movie it doesn't load my images?

is there a simulator or a way for Adobe Device Central to read CS5 created iOS published SWF's or ipa's for testing purposes?At the moment, I make a change in Flash CS5, publish the SWF and IPA, delete the old version from my phone, drop the new IPA in, re sync and test. This is not good for the workflow. What are the options for testing and developing?

I'm trying to load in xml test data into a dynamic text field.

This, however, loads all the text in with tags. How would i go about accessing each node so i can remove the tags so I can apply a css style to each section??
I'd attached one preloader.zip file in that there is FLA and SWF file is there now when you run the source file after completing the preloader to 100% it load test.swf file, now you export the file to preloader.swf and when you will run the preloader.swf file it will run properly but when you put this preloader.swf file into html file and after that you open this html file what will happen that after loading 100% preloader it will not to load test.swf file from html file.

If I try to test from a project with the mx component set on the classpath I get a "getElementIndex not available in non Flex 4 projects" error.Can I unit test spark components in FlexUnits visual test environment while still having the mx component set on the classpath?
UIImpersonator delegates it's method calls to a "testEnvironment".The implementation used for this "testEnvironment" is decided by the VisualTest EnvironmentBuilder class and the FlexEnvironmentBuilder class. If the FlexEnvironmentBuilder class can find the "mx.core.Container" on the classpath it returns a MX environment, else a Spark environment. Only the spark environment has valid implementations for Flex 4 relevant method calls on the UIImpersonator - like the addElement method.
My buttons only work when I click on them on the stage while having the "enable simple buttons" option on. They do not work if I try to "test movie," "test scene" and publish it to a SWF. Nothing responds whenever I am in these modes. I am using Adobe Flash Professional CS5 Actionscript 2.0.

i have a movie that has worked fine in past during Html test but ive been doing some dubugging using the flash test latly and it runs fine here but when i go back and try to test in Html mode no errors come just the movie never fully starts (starts up about as much as if there was an error).

but on scene 2 that performs same function as scene 1, the first button

instead of going to frame 2 goes to frame 3. and the second button goes correctly to frame 3.that happens when i test scene! when i test movie all buttons work properly.

View 1 RepliesI'm running Flash CS4 on a laptop and find it gets sluggish. I find when I restart my computer, I can work at a good speed for a while, but eventually it becomes very laggy - why is this?
Can I dump the cache files or something to simulate the restart? I've reduced the undo history to 10 - any other tips for CS4 on a mediocre machine?
When I have an animation, 180 frames long which contains just some small animations and its running at 120 fps no problems. Now I add a keyframe on frame 90 where a large static image pops in. A 1280x800 background image for example, completely static. Then I try to run it at 120 fps and I get a small freeze(0.25s-0.5s) on frame 90. When I add this large image at frame 1 and set visibility to false and on frame 90 I set visibility to true, I have no problems. So the problem should be in instancing the large background object. What can I do about it? Is it possible to get rid of this problem and still keep using the timeline for animations to not hardcode everything because of this?
View 2 RepliesPowerMac Dual 2.3 GHz G5/8 GB RAM I suspect I'm not using best practices, as this is my first project, but my the flash file is getting very sluggish to work on. The swf (AS 2.0) publishes fine and runs OK off the server and in the browser, but the Flash application is slowing down to a crawl making work very unpleasant indeed. Not that it was ever that fast to begin with. The Flash file size is presently 15 megs. It's got a log of symbols in the library and a lot of small jpgs used as navigational buttons, and utilizes many instances of the loader component to dynamically load external files: Is this too much of a demand on the app's resources? I do think that some of this has to do with a poorly implemented user interface (first attempt by Adobe to make Flash "look and feel" like a CS app), but I'm sure there are other issues.
