I was wondering if an AIR application can find out what OS it's running on, e.g. Windows XP, Vista, Mac OS, etc. Also, is there a way for it to find out the current OS user name?

I have an air application that loads a swf ( built in flex ) , this swf loads moduls and basicaly my air application is a testing environment for this swf .
when i run it in flex environment ( eclipse ) it runs fine , when i run it from my programs ( as an air program ) it gets stuck , what i was thinking is that it has to do with security issues because it gets stuck when my main swf try to loads the moduls .
I'm a newbby in Adobe AIR/Flex. I have developed a simple Flex web app. that through 2 Php's, can connect to a DB and return an XML result of the query. I uploaded the PHP and Flex files to my internet server, and the app. works fine. My question is: How can I make the same app. work in Adobe AIR? In other words, I have made a new AIR project, and I copy/paste the Flex code. When I run the project, it does not work and say things like:

We're interested in putting one of our flash applications on the server back-end so that it can run as a module on the server machine (not on the client!). I know flash wasnt designed for this at all, so my question is:
1) Can I run Flash from the command prompt and pass parameters to it?
2) Can I detect when the Flash has finished running, or a way to communicate with the command prompt from Flash (to inform it once the operations has finished).
3) Can I close the flash application from the command prompt?
We are using flex for same. (Although I know flex is meant for web application and air application is best suited for desktop clients, but due to some build issues we can't go for air applications). Now according to our use case we required to read file from local file system which is not allowed in flex application due to sandbox policy. To override it we had planned to use it in local mode (i.e. running from local file system instead of deploying in web container). So after running application in local mode it bypasses sandbox policy and allows to read local file. Eventually we requires remote services call (either using web services or blaze ds) also in our application. To avoid sandbox restriction for network access in local mode we are planning to explicitly grant network access permission to our flex application.

View 1 RepliesI just updated my AIR runtime to 3.0 and noticed that my AIR application doesn't work anymore. So I tried to debug it it with Flash Builder, but when I run it there, everything works just fine. So I uninstalled the AIR runtime completely but noticed that I can execute my AIR app within Flash Builder still just fine. So the AIR runtime used within Flash Builder seems to be a different one than the systemwide installed AIR runtime. How Do I chose within Flash Builder which runtime to use and how do I update this runtime?

Unfortunately, the KeyboardEvent is not caught when running the app under IE since it is conflicting with the IE native shortcut (closing the active tab). Now the problem, when the socket-server isn't running i get an IOError in Flash what seams alright. Now when i start the server and try to connect again, i don't get an error, but the socket-server doesn't receive a connection either?!

Is it possible to build an application in flash that can then be exported as say an exe and then be used in the background while another application is running? I know that sounds complicated so let me further explain. I currently dj with an application and would like to create another application with flash that allows users to play some custom sounds (drops) while running the primary dj application. I believe someone out there already has created an application via flash that does this (have to read up on it more). But from the research I did do there is no way to interface with the flash application unless you alt-tab to it. Is there someone way to build a flash application that can be assigned windows shortcuts (say f1 funuctionality) while another windows application is running?
View 5 RepliesI'm an application developer, and my standard usage of Flash is as follows: I'm creating an executable application, which contains a ShockwaveFlash object instance, which in turn is displaying a Flash Movie Clip - also created by myself. The executable application and the contained Flash clip are communicating via the ActionScript ExternalInterface (using XML strings) and the FSCommand.
I'd like to be able to debug the ActionScript code of the Flash file while I'm running/debugging my executable application. For that, I need to be able to start a remote debugging session from the Flash object running inside my executable. Problem is, I did not find any way of doing this.
When I publish the Flash SWF file with "permit debugging" checked, I'm able to start a remote debugging session when I'm displaying the file in a player or a browser (the "debugging" option is shown at the right-click menu of the Flash object), but I'm not able to do the same with the object inside my executable (the "debugging" option doesn't exist on the menu).
Environment Details: The executable application is using the ShockwaveFlash COM file to create the ShockwaveFlash object. The executable application is created using VB.NET, Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5. The Flash SWF file is created using Adobe Flash Professional CS4. I'm developing under Windows XP (SP3).
Is it possible to get somehow list of running applications/processes and, while running in background, check which process is active?
Additionally - if somehow, the answer was yes, is it possible to react for change of active window / application react just as if it was Event, or bind to it custom event (e.g. Event.SystemActiveAppChange)?
EDIT: Due to probable missunderstanding, I mean local applications - on your win/mac/linux machine - I would like to (in process of learning of language) track what apps I use the most, make a little graph maybe?

I'm new at AS3. I'm pretty good when it comes to PHP, MySQL or HTML but I'm totally lost in AS.I have a project in Flash Builder 4 that I'm trying to add something to that was built in Flash Professional. It's supposed to loas a couple of external AS files, then execute functions from them at a certain point in the application. I know where I want the functions to execute in the application, and I have linked the AS files to "test.as" which is the main AS file for "testapp.mxml". The problem is calling the "Detector" function from inside "FaceDetector.as" which is one of the external AS files. I'm looking for a really really small linux distribution or process of making my own that's sole purpose is to get an air application to launch full screen and stay there; Essentially I'm building a home kitchen computer that runs entirely as an AIR app.
I have looked into using windows xp; and windows xp embedded but they pose so many issues I figured I'd try modern linux.
I have also seen TinyCore Linux which looks interestingly small but not sure what issues that poses in regards to running AIR and "hardware" accelerated display. I've also thought about stripping down an Ubuntu installation but I'm sure somebody must have done this already; google is just failing me right now.

My Flex web application is almost ready for launch. I'm currently optimizing as much as I can in order to make sure even low-end clients are able to run it fluently. The problem is, I have no idea where to optimize more than I've already optimized. My question is, what are the usuals suspects regarding bottlenecks? What tips and experiences do you have when it comes to Optimizing a Flex app?

But it is not. Should I have such a folder? And, if so, where should it be?

I need to disable all the aspects of functionality which access the client file system in a flash/flex application. I started having a look on how to do this. It appears that the package flash.filesystem need to be importated to allow the interaction with the file system. However, I did not find any reference to this package in the application. I am a beginner concerning these technologies so maybe I am missing a point here. Do I need to look into an other direction?
