Actionscript 3 :: Message Passing Architecture For C++ App Interaction?

Sep 22, 2010

I have a actionscript 3 based desktop Flash app which has its own event model(GUI component) and another native c++ application(business logic) which has its own model. I want to connect them and have a middleware module which can act like an arbiter between the two and dispatch events across the two components according to some model logic required for my domain specific app.

IDE :: Passing Instance Names To A Function Turns Up Error Message?

Feb 24, 2010

I made this function,that is supposed to create a bunch of slides based on a parameter. That parameter should be the instance name:

Code:

function createSlide(instName:Object){
trace(instName);
this.createEmptyMovieClip(instName, this.getNextHighestDepth());[code]....

In the script I call the function with

Code:
createSlide("mySlide");

After execution, this error message appears: Error: A 'with' action failed because the specified object did not exist.The trace statement returns the instance name -"mySlide"- When I replace instName with a stringtype name like "mySlide", it works fine.But I don't want that 'cause in that case I have to write a specific function for each slide.

Flex :: MVC Architecture Development

Nov 22, 2011

I have a mobile application that I want to try and reorganize so that it's easier to read and update and follows better practice.I want to implement an MVC pattern, but I'm getting a little tripped up on getting there. I'm just hoping for some help with rebuilding the architecture. Here's the outline of my application:

Level1) MainView has a column of 5 buttons that when clicked lead to View1, View2, View3, View4 or View5.

Level2) Each of these views is the same: a list, but each is populated with different data. Selecting an item brings the user to another set of views SubView1 - 20. that each are again populated with a list.

Level3) However, any selection made on a List in a SubView leads to a view that is always the same for all selection paths - but is populated with different data. Basically a button, another list, a text input and a textarea.

From what I gather, I should be able to use a lot less files and achieve something of the same result:The model being a single class for data? The controller being a class or that controls the business logic, and a view that calls the controller?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Website Architecture Using MVC Concept

Jan 2, 2010

I'm developing a library + workflow for easy (hierarchical) navigation management inside website or application. From popular - can be somehow compared with Gaia Framework and PageManager from Soma Framework (I do personally don't like these implementations because they quite limit development even if they say they don't). I used to develop website so that each section(sub-section, sub-sub-section...) is an instance of a custom class (that extends DisplayObject: Sprite, MovieClip or whatever Flex container even), that contains logic and data in "single layer" manner... and all the view coponents aswell (texts, thumbnails, whatever).

Each of those sections is implementing INavigableObject interface and has navigationHelper (way of composition pattern), which helps with all navigation stuff. So. This approach was OK. But with my last project I felt need to use MVC design pattern, so I decided to refine my navigation stuff. And so therefore I have a question: how does hierarchy looks like when using MVC (any implementation.. custom one or any popular framework like PureMVC..) for website development?

Flex :: Pageless Architecture - Any Way To Refresh Ads

Feb 4, 2011

I've got a Flex 3 website. I set-up adBrite in an iFrame to serve ads, and it works fine. I've got 2 ad zones in 2 iFrames. My problem is that as Flex has a "pageless" architecture, I only get credit for one hit even if the user clicks every button on the site. In short, I get one pageview instead of several. adBrite said that if I can figure out a way to refresh the ads when the user selects a new item in my navigation menu, they're cool with it. They suggested just refreshing the whole app.

I am creating an app in flash for Android. What would be the correct architecture for this? Would I wrap the flash in Java, and the java would control the adverts and menu?

If so, when, for example, clicking Save on the menu, the java would need to get data (in this case, an image) from the flash app. Is this possible? If so, how? ![enter image description here][1]

Flash - Transform Tool Architecture?

Jan 27, 2012

I'm trying to get familiar with design patterns, modularity, unit testing and etc... (with ActionScript). I'm developing a simple "Free transform tool" right now, just as a exercise, but I don't like the solutions that I come up with so far, so I'll try to walk you trough my line of thoughts. When I come up with the idea I was thinking "What to write so I can test this great Unit testing framework FlexUnit", the first thing that I saw was guess what.. a free transform tool. :) When I was thinking about the architecture of the tool I run every scenario trough "How can I write unit tests for that thing?", so I come up with some kind of twisted MVC meta pattern:

A view that's holding all components (rotation area, drag area, resize buttons)A model (or something like that) that holds the necessary logic (setSize, setPositiom, rotateAroundCenter, etc..).And a controller that add listeners to the view components, update the mouse cursor when its over a component, get the mouse coordinates when is interacted with a component, do the calculations and call methods from the model that will update the view and the object that is benign transformed.

I was thinking: "Ok its flexible, i can switch M, V or C at any time, I achieved my main goal, because I can make lots of unit test for the model, where the important calculations are, so its great..".I just have started implementing it, but I think most of those thoughts are wrong. Yes I can change the view and add new skin but it's not flexible at all, if I want to add "skew" (or any other) functionality I should rewrite (or If I'm lucky just extend) M, V and C.Yes I can make bunch unit test for the model but controller's calculations will be hard to test.

So now I'm thinking for something like the Decorator pattern that will allow me to create whatever combination of controls i want to use and keep their logic separated, but I want to have the option to re-skin the controls themselves and to keep the logic separated so I can do the tests.I realize I want to create some kind of "ultimate transform tool", but I'm really trying to push my limits and learn something.

Flex :: Modules Over MXML Component Architecture?

Dec 2, 2010

I am actually in the process of Architectural of our project. We have choosen Mate framework. The project is not so quite complex, but what advantages i would get over MXML when i choose Modules.

Main App - > Views - > Events - > Maps - > Services [PHP or Java]

When i come up with Modules based Architecture, it seems to be good but i doubt it should not end up with tight coupling and unwanted issues which may break the head later to solve.

Main APP - > Modules - > Module Interface -> Events - > Maps - > Services
[PHP or Java]

What advantages i do get if i choose Modules over MXML Component? What is the prefered and the best way to Architect an FlexApplication? Since the Application is going to communicate with Backend, do we need to make the frontend more complex?

Flash :: What Client Architecture For An LCD Wall Application

Dec 23, 2010

I have been asked to design an LCD wall application for a display like the one in this ad. Requirements are that the wall can display full screen video or partition the wall in different sections to display multiple video or images and video. I would like to understand what platform can be used to drive such beasts (what OS? what video card?). I wonder what software platform can drive multimedia on such a scale. Html5 + JavaScript would be OK on a single monitor, but on that scale would it slow down? Flash also is an interesting platform, as it is Air, but, once again, can it scale like that?

I am also considering the server architecture that is needed to drive a set of walls in the same location and the slideshow designer to create storyboards, but this is dependent on what client architecture will be embraced.

ActionScript 2.0 :: CS2 / CS3 Photo Gallery Website Architecture

Oct 16, 2009

I have built a website for a photo gallery and have added the deep link architecture only after the website is built, so the whole site is kind of cripple... The path to each photo is by clicking buttons in the following order Menu->Submenu->Photo I have designate a link for each photo. The site works properly if I try to reach the photo by clicking button in the above order. However, if I try to access a photo by typing the direct link to it, the photo cannot be displayed coz the swf of the menu and submenu, which are triggered by a button click, is not loaded yet.

The current architecture of my site is that when ever the menu button is clicked a new submenu class will be initiated, so the loading of the submenu class only happens when the menu button is clicked. The following site is an example the way I want to make my site to be : [URL] I could access any image on my site by typing a direct link and the swf could be loaded.

Actionscript 3 :: Component Based Architecture In Game Development?

Oct 1, 2011

I have been thinking of trying out component based architecture for game development. I have read some blog posts and articles about it but I have a few things I have not sorted out yet. When I say component based I mean that you can add components to a ComponentManager that updates all components in its list. I want to try this to avoid getting classes that inherits variables and functions that they donīt need. I really like the idea of having an really simple entity class with a lot of components working side by side without getting bloated. Also, it is easy to remove and add functionality at runtime wich makes it really cool.

This is what I am aiming for.

// this is what the setup could be like
entity.componentManager.add(new RigidBody(3.0, 12.0));
entity.componentManager.add(new CrazyMagneticForce(3.0));
entity.componentManager.add(new DrunkAffection(42.0, 3.0));
// the game loop updates the component manager which updates all components
entity.componentManager.update(deltaTime);

Communication: Some of the components need to communicate with other components I canīt rely on the components to be self-sustaining. Sometime they will need to communicate with the other components.In Unity 3D, you can access the components using GetComponent().I was thinking of doing it like this, but what happens if you have two components of the same type? Maybe you get a Vector back.

var someComponent : RigidBody = _componentManager.getComponent(RigidBody);

Priority: Some components need to update before others

Some components need to update before others to get the correct data for the current game loop. I am thinking of adding a PRIORITY to each component, but I am not sure that this is enough. Unity uses LateUpdate and Update but maybe there is a way to get an even better control of the order of execution.

Flex :: Architecture - Application Framework - PureMVC Portability Vs Swiz?

Dec 9, 2009

My company is building a Flex application that we may need to port to other platforms:

[Code]...

Currently, I'm looking into application frameworks to build upon and I'm torn between pureMVC and Swiz. I LOVE swiz for its simplicity and how it just gives you a way to hook things up and then apply your own patterns. From a flex-only perspective, this is my 1st choice. But, PureMVC is platform-independent and has already been ported over to most of the platforms that are mentioned above. How valuable is this portability? Will it really make our lives significantly easier when it comes to porting and developing/maintaining multiple applications? If so, then it seems like PureMVC is the way to go.

Alternatively, since Silverlight has the most definite business case for porting of our application, maybe we could port Swiz to Silverlight? I'm not too familiar with which AS3 language and Flex framework features Swiz depends on and whether they are available in C#/Silvelright.

My concern with Actionscript is scaling, my concern with PHP is having to build an update system that would need a lot of back and forth xmlhttprequests which might get complicated.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Architecture Duplicate Functionality For Multiple Uninherited Classes?

Jun 8, 2011

I want to add some common functionality to a number of display object classes: Sprite, MovieClip, TextField, TLFTextField, Bitmap, Loader, SimpleButton, and possibly more.I can easily extend any one of those and add my code, but I would need to duplicate the same code across a bunch of classes, ie SuperSprite, SuperMovieClip, SuperTextField, etc.

So the options I've thought of: 1. Use includes, so each class extends whatever and simply includes the class code. I haven't tried this so I'm not sure you can even use includes like that, and I'm not sure how it might affect (break) code hinting.

2. Create a new class that takes a target reference and essentially wraps functionality on to any eligible target instance. I'm not crazy about this because it means the instance I'm dealing with isn't the actual display object (ie its some wrapper that references the display object.)

3. Create a core class that takes a target display object and encapsulates all the functionality, then create separate classes each that extend the various display objects and contain an instance of that core class with itself as the target. I think I like this idea but am sure I would come back later and be confused with the structure.

Media Server :: Determine What Limitations SSAS Has That The C++ Plug-in Architecture Can Rectify?

Dec 9, 2010

I am currently trying to determine what limitations SSAS has that the C++ plug-in architecture can rectify.

Currently I have determined that C++ plug-ins can provide the following benefits: Quality of service increase/decrease based on client info via reserving a set of core processes for premium clients, then have a set of core processes for everyone else. Additional layer of security in the Authorization plug-in

I have not been able to find very many features that the C++ plug-in can provide that you can not provide with some code in the SSAS. So I guess I am just looking for a comparison table of advantages/disadvantages between the C++ and SSAS. How can I exploit the C++ plug-in architecture to do amazing things that the SSAS can not?

Actionscript 3 :: Structuring System Architecture In A Flex Web Application On A Budget (w/o Java)

May 28, 2010

I started a project a while back using the following architecture from Adobe Developer Article talking about Creating marketing platforms in Flex. I did my first set of coding locally forgetting that my server did not handle Tomcat. So I said okay, and cut some corners and then some other limitation came up and I cut some more corners. Eventually for a good week or two, it was trying to get the project working with making the ends meet. Layers started to merge.

In the end I used a

PureMVC (Presentation/Client) -> ZendAMF (Communication) -> MySql (Data) Layout.

It worked but I never felt as though I had some layer just to take care of all the SQL calls to the data.It just felt hacked together

So should I keep the above setup and just start from the presentation layer and move downwards like they said in the article or is there a better layering (based on a hosting plan that does not handle Java) I could accomplish ?
