I've created a function that works on the main stage and I am trying to transfer it to an external class to make it an easily reusable function.When I run it however, everything works except for the fact that it doesn't put anything on the stage as it should. All the info it needs is there it's just not putting it there.Therefore I conclude that I am using the addChild(); incorrectlyhere is some of my code if needed:
ActionScript Code:
public function drawBoard(i:int, j:int, tiles:Tile, boardArr:Array, stageBoardArr:Array):void {

I was trying to add a TextField to the stage from an external class. I've made a small example of the part that isn't working for me.
The basic idea of the external class:
Code:
package {
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.text.TextField;
[code]....
When I run this I don't get any errors, but the text still doesn't show on the stage.

I load external swf file into main movie. and i give that child a name page0 there is a bit of code.
[Code]....
so after its loaded i want to insert some text into external swf using main movie. i managed to remove external swf, like this ActionScript Code: holder_mc0.removeChild(holder_mc0.getChildByName("pages0")); but i wonder how to insert text into that swf. i don't understand how hierarchy works, when you addChild, what name should i use for my external files. for example ActionScript Code: holder_mc0. ?????? .mainTemplate.tContent.text = "TEXT"

I have the followings:
_p:Player (which is a MC)
a1:Animation1 (which is a MC)
_p.addChild(a1); //doesn't display anything
_p.stage.addChild(a1); //displays a1
Why won't the MC display a child without using his stage?

I have a main "shell" swf which, by clicking several buttons, will load/unload various external swfs into a Placeholder_mc which resides on the main timeline in Shell.swf In the documentation and tutorials I've seen a couple different methods, and I'm not sure I quite understand the difference, or at least the reason you would use one over the other...In the 1st method, you can just add the Loader object using the addChild() method:
Code:
var myLoader:Loader = new Loader();
var myURLRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("ExternalFileA.swf");
myLoader.load(myURLRequest);
Placeholder_mc.addChild(myLoader);
This will apparently add myLoader to the display list once it has completely loaded.The 2nd method, you supposedly can add the Loader.content; however, it appears you can only do this once the content has completed loading, so you need to incorporate an event handler with the contentLoaderInfo object:
Code:
var myLoader:Loader = new Loader();
var myURLRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("ExternalFileA.swf");
myLoader.load(myURLRequest);
[code]....
What are the pros/cons of adding the entire Loader object, as opposed to the Loader.content and vice versa?

All I'm trying to do is load an external .swf file into a precise location on the stage of my existing Flash file. I've spent an hour and a half on this site search and found nothing. What do I add to my loadMovie command to place the file at specific x,y coordinates?

I am very new to Flash and am looking for some help with linking a class I made that will shake the mc when hovered. Right now, I have all 8 mc on the stage. I had it working with repeating the code for each button but I wanted to make it into a class that way I could emininate some of the code.
I have linked each button by selecting "export for actionscript" and set the base class to "ShakeButton" and each class is named after the mc name. the mc names are just 1_mc - 8_mc.I am getting an error of 1120: Access of undefined property shaker_mc.Here is the code that I have in the ShakeButton.as file

In my website I would like to import a external file into the stage .The appearance of this file is an image divided into a grid of 6 rectangles (each one a mcl). What I would like to do is, on mouse over, each mcl could rotate to show its back. The idea is when you click , let's say, Adobe the Adobe logo will appear divided in 6 rectangles and when you go over with the mouse they rotates to show Adobe products.

I am building a pretty basic app which pulls data from an XML file and displays it on my site. It's basically for displaying reviews of other sites so each record has a title, image, description, rating and URL field.I have got as far as being able to display one record at a time, however I would like to dynamically add new placeholders depending on how many reviews there are for a given category.In Flex you can do this with I think it is called the repeater component. However I am not sure the best way to achieve this in flash? So to summarize I guess I am looking for a way to dynamically add new elements to the stage for each record in my external XML file for a given category.

I have a dynamic textfield called neighName on my Flash stage. I also have a movieclip that I call a region on my stage. When I mouseover the region, I want a word to display in a little popup *and* I want some text to display in my textfield. I have an external .as file for handling the region. I can make the code "see" my region, but I can't seem to make it see my textfield, although no errors are being thrown.

I'm importing a cool external photo gallery .swf; however I can't figure out the stage settings. I created an empty movie clip and added the import script in there. Works good and can align clip where I want, but the .swf file is not appearing as a 550px X 413px contained .swf. It stretches to fit the main stage.

I've been searching around all afternoon, and am pulling my hair out. 1) I have a movieclip instance on stage (simple graphical element that represents platforms for a hero to run and jump along). I have placed it on the stage with an external class engine.as and in this class it is called myPlatform and is an object of Platforms.as. The movieClip is called platforms and from a trace(myPlatform.name) the instance name is instance3.
2) I am attempting to access the properties of myPlatform in an Enterframe event loop in my character control and collision class (called hero.as)
Basically here is the bit of code I am trying implement within Hero.as :
[Code]...
This all worked when I was writing actionscipt within the FLA file, on the timeline frame 1. I simply don't know how to access myPlatform from within the external Hero.as class! Do I need to create a variable? Is there a really easy way to do this with some syntax/command that I have not learned yet?

The following piece of code works in the timeline:
var ball:Sprite = new Sprite;

ball.graphics.beginFill(Math.random()*0xff0000);[code].....
Is the stage accessed differently with the getBounds method in an external file than in the timeline?

I'm having a very odd bug with ActionScript 3 in Flash CS4. I am adding movie clips to a stage in a for loop and then moving them out of view so that I can pull them in and remove them when I need them.
I've narrowed down the issue to a point that I know that every time one of the movie clips are added to the stage using addChild(), the stage shifts to the right by one pixel. I know that sounds odd, but it's literally true... the 0 line on the y axis is shifted to the right one pixel every time the movie clip is added.
Here's the code that is doing the work:
private function setupSlides():void
{
for(x = 0; x < TOTAL_SLIDES; x++)
{
[Code].....

I am trying to add an object to my main stage via the addChild() method. Normally, when working within the FLA itself, using addChild(myObject) works just fine. However, it does not work within an external AS class.
All of the other tutorials I have found showed me how to do something like this, which is not what I need:
var myMovieClip:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
myMovieClip.addChild(myObject); // Works great, but not what I need
how to add an object to my main stage via an external AS class.
