Actionscript 3 :: Pass Argument In AddEventListener?
Apr 12, 2011
How do I pass arguments using ActionScript's event-listener?I have code, as given below, which creates a label, and I want, when clicked on the label it should pass the toolTip associated with that label. This is what I was trying to do:
public function create_folderpath():void
{
for(var i:int = 0; i < fm_model.absolute_path_ac.length; i++)
[code].....

The transition from AS2.0 to 3.0 has been a long and broken trail for me.
Is there a way to pass arguments to a function via addEventListener, like (but unlike) this: timerTurn.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, moveUnit, "unitname", "unitdirection")
where moveUnit is the function I want triggered, and "unitname"/"unitdirection" are the arguments?

I'm trying to pass my object class as constructor argument. I have something like this:

import flash.display.BitmapData;
import flash.display.Bitmap;
[code]....
Now, when I try to create my Example:
import myclass.Example;

I get message, that I'm not passing any variable (Error #1063). Why is that? What is wrong with it?

I created and filled a multidimentional array, and passed it to a function, like this:
var array = new Array();
for (i=0; i<someLength; i++) {
array[i] = new Array();
[Code]....
I get an undefined value, like the array I just passed is just a value. What would be the correct way of achieving this?

I have recently moved from AS2 to AS3 and I am finding the transition fairly easy, however I do have a few questions, some of which may not have been possible with AS2 but I would like to achieve them in AS3
1. Is it possible to pass the name of a class as an argument in a function and then use it to create a new instance. e.g [code]
2. Carrying on from the previous question, if a class can infact be passed, can I specifying a variable type for the argument so that only classes and not instances will be accepted?
3. I have three class files that all inherit some functions and variable from another class called Ship. Is it possible to specifying a variable type so that the variable can only hold instances of classes that are inherited from the Ship class?

Here is what I am trying to do. Make a dynamic number of buttons on the stage. Place a BtnNum variable in each button so that when the button is clicked it will pass that BtnNum to a function. Here is my code so far
[Code]...
I know that if I use something like this["Btn"+i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, function(e:MouseEvent){SayNumber(e, "Hello")}); it will pass a variable but I want to make the variable dynamic and I am lost. I am new to as3 since a week ago.

So i have 4 buttons, that represent values: 10, 50, 100, 1000
When i click one of them i what a global variable declared: pulic var stake:int = 0; to e initialized with the value of the button pressed.
So i have the following code:
stake0050_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, changeStake);
i would like to have a function changeStake, witch will update a variable called stake.
How can i tell the event listened to call changeStake with an argument?

Ok, I have 2 buttons on the stage. Each button does almost the same thing, so I want to create a single function, and each button calls that same function (we'll name that function "Navigate")... however, the function will need to end up doing something different dependant on which button was clicked.So, previously, in AS2, I would've added some code onto the buttons themselves with on(release) methods, like so:
Code:
// Define the Navigate function
function Navigate(myLabel){

Trying to migrate my way of thinking from AS2 to CS4/AS3. Ok, I have 2 buttons on the stage. Each button does almost the same thing, so I want to create a single function, and each button calls that same function (we'll name that function "Navigate")... however, the function will need to end up doing something different dependant on which button was clicked. So, previously, in AS2, I would've added some code onto the buttons themselves with on(release) methods (see CODE EXAMPLE 1) So, each button effectively calls the Navigate function, and passes a different frame label to the function. Now, I'm trying to recreate this functionality in AS3. As you all know, on(release) has been done away with (still don't know why), but we now have to use event handlers, so I'm trying to figure out a way to pass a different frame label argument to the Navigate function. Currently I can achieve that by using a switch statement to test which button was clicked, and act accordingly (see CODE EXAMPLE 2).

i have couple of videos that i want to play in succession. my theory on how to do this was to add an event listener that would call function to change the source of the FLVPlayback component and play once the initial video finished playing. The problem is that i don't know what parameters to pass to the eventlistener and the acting function. I just need someone to fill in the blanks to the following code

I'm having to pass data (originally read via an XML file loaded by the parent class) to a child class upon instantiation, and I can't decide which is the better method.I could parse the XML in the parent and throw the data into an Object and pass that object to the child class....or just pass the part it needs as an XMLList and let the child class do the parsing.Seems like a trivial decision, yes, but I'm not sure of longer-term implications.

Trying to pass a variable as well and cant seem to escape to pass it. How can I pass using window.open as such: Trying to pass (pid) all i get back is (pid) and not actual pid.How to on a jscommand?
Code:
something.onRelease = function () {
var jscommand:String = "window.open('http://www.someform.php?proj= + (pid)','win','height=200,width=300,toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes');"; getURL("javascript:" + jscommand + " void(0);"); }
I can do a standard getUrl("http://www.someform.php?proj=" + (pid), "_blank"); works fine but no control over window properties.

I've got all the major peices of my project but I need a steering wheel! I'm not sure how to enable the functionality of the app. Let me try to explain: I have 2 working getTimer timers in 2 class files. One is a 15 minute countdown timer. The other is a timer to call animations, but (here's the problem)i have 4 different sets of animations to call based on the users button selection. They are added to the stage with
ActionScript Code:
var countdown:CountDown = new CountDown(time_txt);//where time_txt is a TextField on the stage
addChild(countdown);
var Alerts:sniperAlerts = new sniperAlerts();
addChild(Alerts);
They kinda have to be called to the stage in this manner because I have some buttons that alter the time on the fly based on the Alerts and countdown var. I tried having 4 different alert files, but you can't declare them all as the Alerts var if you use different frames. In addition you can't repeatedly call the countdown timer as the same var because of namespace. I wish I knew how to make menu_mc to pass an argument to the stage that selects which animation set the alerts timer will process. Here's the alert timer with 1 set of animations to call:

What I want to do is to remove an item from the array targetArray when the tween hitFade has finished. I added a MOTION_FINISH event to the hitFade tween which calls the spliceTarget function. I wanted to send an argument to the function indicating the targetArray index to splice, but apparently I'm not allowed to send any argument.
how do I send the targetArray index (i) along to the spliceTarget function?
I'm guessing that I could put i into a global variable and use that in the spliceTarget function, but that seems kind of roundabout.
Code:
var hitFade:Tween = new Tween(targetArray[i], "alpha", Strong.easeOut, targetArray[i].alpha, 0, 1, true);
hitFade.addEventListener(TweenEvent.MOTION_FINISH, spliceTarget);

My question is, can a function bring in an argument and then use that argument as a class name? Here is an example:
Actionscript Code:
package {
import flash.text.Font;
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.text.TextField;
import flash.text.TextFormat;
import flash.text.TextFieldAutoSize;
public class embedTest extends Sprite {
[Code] .....
Basically, if I have a swf with:
Actionscript Code:
var example:embedTest = new embedTest(Font1);addChild(example);
Can the class file bring in Font1 and use it as the class name.

pre_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, backward);
function forward() { nextFrame();
}function backward(){ prevFrame();
