Actionscript 3 :: Setup An Array Of Movieclip Buttons To Navigate Across Timeline?

Mar 12, 2012

I wanted to setup an array of movieclip buttons to navigate across my timeline via labels, this is where it went pear shaped.

Having spent three days reading and attempting most online solutions I couldn't find a method which worked 100% without failing in some way or another.

I've had some joy with the method below having seen a blog entry covering different ways to call frames etc and which highlighted the bugbear below :

clipArray[i].mouseChildren = false; //Hidden bugbear

I've added the full code below so hopefully it may help anyone else who similarly nearly resorted to hari-kari in trying this.

import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.events.Event;
var clipArray:Array = [btn_1,btn_2]; // Movieclip's called btn_1 etc...

[Code]....

This works fine, now however my understanding of whether it is 'good' code or not is an issue, if this could be improved in any way I'd like to know why and how as the problem with learning AS3 from 2 is that often you use code having seen it online without fully grasping the detail.

Adding MovieClip buttons with fluidity and which cancel out from an array became a three day mission when you're learning...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Navigate With Previous And Next Buttons To Frame Labels Stored In An Array?

Mar 8, 2011

I have a long timeline with a series of slides arranged along it with a labeled frame at the beginning of each slide.These slides do not have any standardized length so instead of counting out frames and jumping a set number I am trying to navigate with my previous and next buttons to frame labels stored in an array.

This works GREAT!Or rather...it works great if you're rapidly hitting the Next and Previous buttons to step through the area.The problem comes when you sit and try to watch the whole thing play out and then try to use the next button.If you have passed framelabel2 and hit the next button it returns you to framelabel2.If you have passed framelabel3 and hit the next button it returns you to framelabel2. Clearly the problem is that it does not know it has gone past framelabel1 and is thus gotoandplay-ing the next frame in the array...which is 2.I need to make it check its current position in the array before adding 1 and advancing the playhead.

var fLabels:Array = new Array("start1", "start2", "start3", "start4", "start5", "start6", "start7");
var cLabel:Number = 1;
function nextPlayClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {[code].....

what's the simplest way to navigate within one timeline? I have a simple 5 page site and in a code layer, I assigned this script for each button: Home_button.onPress = function(){ gotoAndStop("home");

So when I tested the movie, I realized that I need something to make the playhead not move until something is clicked. Right? Do I still need to go into the actions for each button and say something like gotoAndPlay?

ActionScript 3.0 :: MovieClip Buttons Referring To Main Timeline?

Sep 1, 2009

I've got what I think isn't a real tough one however I can't seem to get this working.

I have a MovieClip. This movie clip has 21 buttons. These 21 buttons should be forwarding the user to frames 60-81 on the maintime line.

The actionscript I've added is not providing any errors however it's working either as these buttons don't do anything unfortuanlty.

Below is a sample of the code i've placed within the MovieClip itself, as the buttons and the button names are contained in the movieClip.

AS3 Code Being Used

button1_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, button1Click);function button1Click(e:MouseEvent):void{    gotoAndStop(55)}

This code is listed for each button instance and to forward the user to a frame on the main timeline (NOT the timeline in the MovieClip itself).

Again, this code is contained in the MovieClip itself and not on the main timeline, as the buttons exist in the movieClip I.E. button1_btn to button21_btn

Lastly, to provide a visual idea of what i'm expereincing, please refer to screenshot embeeded in this message or the attachment (same thing).

AS3 :: Buttons Controlling Timeline Not Working Inside MovieClip?

Feb 25, 2011

This is my first time coding a website using ActionScript. So far everything has went very well, I designed the website in Photoshop, and imported to Flash CS5. Then I cleaned everything up, and started adding navigation to the various pages using buttons.The website is constructed in a very simple manner, there are five main pages and they are connected by buttons on a static navigation bar (the first page, home, doesn't have a corresponding button). Then there are nine sub pages, that each contain information on a character of the game, and are connected to corresponding buttons in the 'Character' layer/MovieClip. My four menu buttons (Story, The World, Characters, Extras) all navigate correctly without problems.

The problem arises because inside my Characters page (a movie clip) are nine buttons, each linking to a different page. These buttons should bring the timeline to the frame specified, but when the buttons are clicked nothing happens. I've spent hours searching for a solution to this, but with no avail, and I have a feeling the answer is prettysimple.gotoAndStop("gowang", "Scene 1");line in the Gowang character button function with:MovieClip(root).gotoAndStop("gowang");

ActionScript 2.0 :: Change Movieclip Buttons State When Timeline Reaches A Certain Frame?

Nov 18, 2009

I have a menu with 4 movieclip buttons (movieclips that act as buttons) that when pressed make the timeline jump to a certain frame. The mc buttons have both "onrollover" and "selected" states. However the timeline also moves on its own, even if no button is pressed.

I need the buttons to assume the "selected" state when the timeline reaches a specific frame (as if the button had been pressed to make the timeline jump there). But I can't figure out how to do it althought I think it must be quite simple.

This is the code I'm using (controls the buttons and its on the first frame of the main timeline)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
// create an array of all nav buttons in group
var groupinfo:Array = [birds, bears, bats, bunnies];
// create constants to define start and stop of fadein and fadeout sequences
// (fadeout should be exactly the same sequence as fadein, in reverse frame order)

ActionScript 3.0 :: Navigate On Main Timeline Using Custom .as?

Apr 21, 2010

OK, I'm back, and I have another issue that's bogging me down. The project I am working on has individual frames, each of which holds separate movie clips.  Within those movieclips are buttons which allow the user to navigate to the next frame in the main timeline.  The button objects are different in each frame, so these aren't objects that I can just put on the main timeline (some are nested within several objects)

I want to be able to use a line like:myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, rootnextframe);

and not have to always then follow that up with the function declaration. I've tried just declaring the function on the main timeline, but when the script within the objects call the function, it doesn't see it.

I have created an actionscript file that reads:package public function rootnextframe():void {      MovieClip(root).nextFrame();}}

but I get the errors:Call to a possible undefined method MovieClip.Access of undefined property root.

So, clearly, I'm going about this all wrong.  I feel like it's a waste to have a function that has only one line, but I can't think of any other ways to do what I'm trying to get it to do.

Actionscript 3 :: Flash Timeline Sound Not Stopping On Navigate Away?

Dec 16, 2009

I have a Flash piece that has one main timeline that loads different movie clips and different sections of that main timeline.

On those embedded movie clips within the main timeline are sounds attached to the embedded movieclips timelines set to "stream". They have to be on the timeline so they sync up correctly (I can't load the sounds programatically).

I'm having the issue that when I navigate to a new section on the main timeline, the movieclip that was embedded on the timeline I navigated away from goes away, but the sound continues to play. I can't figure out how to get the sound to stop once I've navigated away.

I can't add a stop all sounds because the navigation of the movie is controlled from an external player I don't have control over (basically the external player just calls a gotoAndStop("myFrame") on the movie.)

ActionScript 3.0 :: MovieClip - Add The Array To The Pop Up Buttons?

Aug 1, 2011

I am kinda new to flash, but I have been able to navigate myself around enough to learn a thing or 2. I have an array of movie clip buttons that when clicked stays in the down position until a new button is clicked. When one of those buttons is clicked a movieClip goes accross the stage (above the other array) and 6 new options open up for a photographers gallery (Newborns, children, family, etc, etc, etc) I am trying to add an array to the new buttons that show when a portfolio button is clicked, but keep getting an error in the output panel saying something about trying to access a "null" object. I have put the new array script in the movie clip button "portfolio" and I have also tried in the main timeline.

I assume that my problem is that the movie clips for the buttons I am trying to add the array to dont really show up at all until the down status of the button. Or I could definietly be wrong. How would I add the array to the pop up buttons?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Placing Intro And Common Element Setup On Main Timeline?

Sep 14, 2006

I'm building an animation intensive website and I want to keep my code centralized on the first frame of the main timeline. Most of the intro animations (like building the sites common elements such as menu, header, etc...) have to be done on a timeline since they are pretty complex. Would you keep the main timeline with only one frame and attach the animations via actionscript, or would you place the intro animations on the main timeline, stretching it out?

I usually place the intro and common element setups all on the main timeline cause that gives me more control on linking animations together. For example: the intro plays, then the menu loads in, then some special effects popup, and then the home content is loaded in. But since some people advocate for single frame main timelines, I'm wondering if there is a better approach.
