Actionscript 3 :: Single Massive Class For All Data Storage?

Nov 14, 2011

I have created a class that I've been using as the storage for all listings in my applications. The class allows me to "sign" an object to a listing (which can be created on the fly via the sign() method like so):

manager.sign(myObject, "someList"); This stores the index of the element (using it's unique id) in the newly created or previously created listing "someList" as well as the object in a 2D array. So for example, I might end up with this:

Flash :: Using Bitmap Data To Draw Massive Image?

Feb 18, 2011

I am making a snow boarding game in AS3. The problem I am having is that I want to leave a trail in the snow behind the board.

I have had a think and feel that the best way of achieving this would be to use the lineTo() method to draw a line form the snowboards previous position to its current position. If I do this all of the way down the slope I would end up with a line almost 23000 pixels long which seems extremely large and will have a major impact on performance.

If I were to convert the trail movieclip to a bitmap would it improve performance? I am targeting a minimum of flash player 9 which I have found to have issues when handling bmp's over 2880 pixels so I think this method might not work.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Best Practices For Data Storage

Feb 27, 2010

I've been working on a game the past few days where there is to be a LARGE amount of stored data. By a large amount, I'm talking something like 200+ entries of around 12 fields.The game is being designed with the intent of playing it online (per say), so I can't rely on storing specially made files on one's computer (Not that I think I could and do it in a way where players cannot modify it). I also do not want to rely on a stored XML file on the internet or on a database, because if the website that has this data goes down or if the person loses internet access, then the game becomes unplayable.So, I need to store this data in the game itself, but I am unfamiliar with the best way to go about doing this. I've normally worked with outside sources for data storage, as they were designed in closed environments (aka intranet) or the website that the SWF would be on would also be where the database used is stored. Neither apply to this game, as the game will likely be put up on Flash portals like Newgrounds.

Flash And Remote Data Storage

Apr 8, 2011

A few years ago I was up-skilling form AS2 to AS3. In the process I could have sworn I came across a resource that was all about using SQL and Flash AS3 together. It looked like native AS3 SQL communication.I remember thinking "That's cool, will use that one day" and then putting the book down. Well it is now one day and I need to remotely read and update data from a Flash file. The thing is I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it.Searching online has been a bit discouraging. All I can find is a lot of people saying there is no native Flash AS to SQL communication. Was I dreaming, or are all the posts I'm finding old and referring to AS2?If this is the case, is there a way to save shared objects or XML files to a remote server? Or is my only option calling php files from Flash?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Specify A Value Of A Single Item To Get The Rest Of The Data?

Jul 7, 2009

I am having a problem parsing xml data, I know how to get it into as3, and that is working pretty well after following a brilliant tutorial on kirupa: [URL]

But I am having a problem tracing the data that I want. Seemingly it is connecting to the database and is working in that sense but when I try to trace data I am getting a couple problems.

The first is that I need to somehow specify a value of a single item to get the rest of the data. Here is the xml:

XML Code
<user>
<name>{$line["name"]}</name>
<id>{$line["id"]}</id>";

on (release) {
_root.gotoAndPlay("Main");
}

There are 9 scenes which are very short.BUT, when I tried to export it, it took about 15 minutes to export.

I have about 1000 images and 1000 sounds that I am using in it. About 70MB of data

How will this affect a users computer?

Is it even possible the load up this much content?

I ask because I am getting stack overload error on my bulkloader!

Scares me to think that months of work will go down the drain because I can't load this much data!

Flash :: Massive Efficiency In Timeline Project?

Feb 1, 2012

this is the offending bit of code:

for (var i in yearMarkersArray) {
yearMarkersArray[i].x = ((timelines.x + 350) % 140) + (140 * i) - 5;
yearMarkersArray[i].text = "0";
}

This is part of the main loop that triggers whenever the user drags the zoomed-out timelines (the sprites in eventsArray) left or right. The six TLFText objects in yearMarkersArray appear to scroll left or right with the user, but are really repositioned and relabeled with the correct year markers as calculated by a function I did not include above (it's working and not relevant to this problem, I simply replaced it with the "0" for clarity).

The text-setting statement is the problem code...I've commented literally everything else out of the main loop to verify it. I even changed the statement to not involve any function call (simply setting the text attribute to "0"), and it still causes the final .swf to eat an extra 1% of my CPU every 15 seconds until finally the FPS crashes through the floor. The rest of the main loop has much, MUCH more complex and I'm sure inefficient code that also runs every frame,Since this project reads a data file with a list of timeline events whose span of years I cannot predict, I do need the displayed year markers to be done dynamically in some way. The code ultimately works (I only noticed the ridiculous slowdown when I accidentally left the movie open and idle for a few minutes),

ActionScript 1/2 :: Create A Single Large Bitmap Data At Run Time?

Feb 8, 2010

Requirement: Create single very large bitmap data which contain some 30 PNG images loaded and for each image it should have some text.  Images and text are loaded dynamically (AS2 code. Images are stored in a remote server). The bitmap data display should show 8 images at a time and corresponding text. We can see rest content by scrolling (kinetic scroll is implemented). How can I go for it?Some questions:Is there any limit for size of bitmap data ( As per link there is restriction on the height of the bitmap we can create in AS2 (max value is 2880 which is not enough for some 30 element list If we create individual bitmap data for 30 individual PNG files, we find some jerks in scroll. How can we have smooth scrolling?

Flash - Adobe Cirrus: Deliver A Chunk Of Data To A Single Peer With Known Id?

Jun 17, 2011

Adobe Cirrus offers a number of options for transferring data from peer to peer: Directed Routing, Object Replication and Multicasting to name a few.I just want to send the data to one specific peer, its fine for other peers to 'see' it in transit.

My experiments with Directed Routing (the obvious answer) have not gone well. all the sendto... methods fail, while NetGroup.post works fine on the same netgroup. I am concerned about using direct connections because of reliability.

Has anyone successfully implemented a one to one messaging strategy (not one to many), which can still message between non-connected peers - (Directed Routing) or solved this problem successfully?

I am considering various workarounds, but I am quite perplexed that these NetGroup methods: sendToNearest, sendToNeighbour & sendToAllNeighbours just seem to fail, for no apparent reason.

I've been working with the flash data grid component, and I want to update just one cell in the data grid without updating the entire dataset. I haven't found anyway to do this and the object inheritance makes it really difficult to track down properties of specific child elements. var cellData:String = _currentPlaylistDataGrid.columns[0].itemToLabel(_currentPlaylistDataGrid.getItemAt(_c urrentSlideID));

What's the best way to do this? It's NOT on a click event or interactive event.

Php :: Send More Than One 'stream' Of Jpeg ByteArray Data In A Single URLRequest And Output 2 Images?

Jan 25, 2011

I have an AS3 swf which users can upload jpg images to my EC2 instances which sit behind and Elastic Load Balancer. The jpg images are converted into bytearray data and sent using URLLoader.load(URLRequest)I make 2 calls when uploading, one to upload a large version, then another to upload a thumbnail version. A PHP script to which the bytearray data is uploaded converts this to a file using file_put_contents($destination,$GLOBALS["HTTP_RAW_POST_DATA"])Is it possible to combine these two requests into a single request which contains both the bytearray data for the large and thumbnail images and 'split' the HTTP_RAW_POST_DATA to create 2 files at the server. This would be better than uploading the bytearray for the large version then using something like ImageMagick to resize the resulting image into a thumbnail which I realise is another option.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Loading Multiple Sound Files With A Single Class?

Nov 11, 2009

I am working on a simple game for kids. The game revolves around the alphabet and it is all voiced. So I have a good number of sound files that I need to call on at any given moment.In AS2 I would just link all of the sound files to variables at run-time and have them ready to play when the interaction dictated it.... with the way "linkage" has changed in AS3... I feel like it would be a bad idea to have over 50 different class files (one for each sound file) so I am looking for a cleaner solution... that and I am guessing that having redundant class files misses the point.I haven't had much luck finding a forum post or tutorial that talks directly about this type of issue but the idea is a little foreign right now so I am sure I have stared directly into the gold mine and not noticed. I am very interested any thoughts or links on the subject.

I should create a single skin class for outermost container i.e BorderContainer and any how provide different fonts and background color to all the 3 child containers through that skin class. So, is it possible that I can create single skin class that can provide different decorations to each of the child container.
