Flash - Create A Vector With A Runtime Defined Data Type?
Feb 17, 2011
Typically you create a Vector (strongly typed array) specifying a data type like:
new Vector<PictureBox>();
However I need to create a utility method that should be able to create a vector of any given datatype. Is it possible to specify a type using a variable instead of hard-coding it?
var type:Class = PictureBox;
new Vector<type>();

I have a class member in an ActionScript 3 class that looks something like this:
private var m_myvect :Vector.<MyType> = new <MyType>[];
I'm exposing it through a getter, like this:
public function get mydata() :Vector.<MyType>
Which doesn't help when I use it like this:
for (var o:Object in inst.mydata)
{
...
}
... because the type of o is not MyType, but Number instead, because it enumerates the vector indices instead of the data.How would I expose only the data within the vector in a way which:Does not expose the data in a way which allows it to be modified?

Is it possible to override this information e.g type.@isDynamic, as well as extendsClass.@type, at runtime? without bytecode?

I'd like to know if there is any way or any vector graphic file format that i can load dynamically at runtime on a web-based flash application.I have some files in pdf that i want to load in and i can convert them to jpgs at runtime and load the jpgs but then i lose vector graphics so when i zoom in and out they become pixelated.
I had a look a look at flashpaper to convert pdf to swf and load them in but i can't see anywhere in the documentation about converting the pdf's at runtime rather than manually dragging and dropping them in.So far i've looked at pdf, svg and .ai but none of these can be loaded at run time just imported into the .So can this be done? Or alternatively is there an application that can do the pdf -> swf conversion from the commandline then i could trigger php to do the conversion at runtime.

i've developed an cross-platform AIR application, which seriously under performs on mobile devices caused by animating/using vector graphics instead of bitmap assets. employing cacheAsBitmapMatrix / cacheAsBitmap is better, when and where assigned appropriately, but still not as fast as using bitmap assets.
i've attempted to bitmapData.draw() the vector graphics to a Bitmap object at runtime and animate the bitmap object instead, but this performs only about as well as (or maybe even exactly the same as) simply caching the vector graphic as a bitmap.
Flash Professional 5.5 UI now has the ability to convert a vector graphic into a bitmap assets, but is it possible to do this at runtime? is it possible to have an actual Rasterize() routine to convert programatically drawn vector graphics and maybe even editable text into bitmaps at runtime for optimal animated performance, especially on mobile devices?

Ok, I need some help on this one. I upgraded from Flash Builder 4 to Flash Builder 4.5 and have switched my project to the 4.5.1 sdk. I use an ant script to build my project, so I modified it to use the appropriate flexTasks.jar, mxmlc, etc...
Now, if I start out with a blank bin-debug folder, then build and run the app everything works fine. However, if I then make a code change and build (without deleting the bin-debug) then run the app I get a runtime error:

I would like to use Bitmaps in my Actionscript games.For me this represents a large change in my workflow as I have always used Vector but Bitmaps are really so much faster to render in certain circumstances. As far as I can see, 90% of all my game assets can be bitmaps.Firstly, are there any good tools for working with Vector to BitmapData? Libraries or OpenSource utilities?I know you can just draw to a BitmapData, and I do that, but what about Animations? What about a MovieClip of a laughing cow? How can I render that MovieClip at runtime to some kind of Bitmap version?But more complex than that What about situations where you do not have the MovieClip in a raw form?Imagine 10000 cogs turning at the same rate which is generated with code. This is hard work for the processor, so drawing it to a Bitmap for the duration of 1 revolution, would replace 10000 cogs with a SpriteSheet. I could destroy the cogs, and keep the SpriteSheet. Can anyone offer me any resources or google keywords I can search for, not sure of the technique but it seems to make sense? Especially with Starling..

i load in AS3 data into flash and mantain their data type? Like receiving an array and even with arrays in it and recognizing that is an array instead of a standard string.
And if this is possible is it more reliable then using XML?

Specific to Flash Professional CS5. With its export options greatly reduced, there seems to be no way to make Flash graphics accessible by other programs. Is there any workaround?Currently, Flash can output two kinds of vector images: SWF and FXG, neither of which seem to be importable by most applications, including Fireworks and Illustrator (which write to FXG but not read from it), and Catalyst doesn't seem to write to anything other than what Builder uses. In other words, I know no way to export Flash files to vector formats (besides using Flash CS4).

I am trying to use my Flash app to update an XML file when a new user registers. I thought I had found a method to do this using the FileReference.save function. From various searches I understand the function is not as simple as it seems but I cannot get my head around what I need to do to get it working.Here is the code:
ActionScript Code:
var newUserToAdd:String = "<user>
<name>Steve</name>[code]............
This is the error I am getting at runtime: 1061: Call to a possibly undefined method save through a reference with static type flash.net:FileReference. Are ther any prerequisits I am missing in order to use the function?

I have a quick question for you all. I'm trying to convert over some ActionScript code to C++ and am having a difficult time with this one line:
private var edges:Vector.<Array> What is this exactly? Is this essentially a multidimensional vector then? Or is this simply declaring the vector as a container? I understand from researching that vectors, like C++ vectors, have to be declared with a type. However, in C++ I can't just put down Array, I have to use another vector (probably) so it looks like:
I don't expect you guys to know the C++ equivalent because I'm primarily posting this with AS tags, but if you could confirm my understand of the AS half, that would be great. I did some googling but didn't find any cases where someone used Array as it's type.

I have a class which takes a Vector.<DisplayObject> in it's constructor. I had expected it to be ok to create instances of this class by passing Vectors of types that are subclasses to the DisplayObject class (in this case Sprite ans SimpleButton). But it doesn't work. And casting these Vectors as Vector.<DisplayObject> when declaring the instances doesn't work either. [code]...

I'm currently building a create-your-own t-shirt application using AS3. My client needs the resulting design as an Adobe Illustrator file for printing. Is there a way to dynamically create an AI file from your Flash app? The only solution I have been able to come up with is recreating the design in a special version of the app that only the client has access to (the app would automatically load and create what the customer designed). This version of the app uses PrintJob to create a printable version of the design that the client saves to a PDF and then opens in Illustrator. It works, but as you can see, it's a messy process and creates additional steps for the client.

I'm looking for a way to take SVG path info (basically a string of coordinates) and dynamically draw it with Actionscript. Icing on the cake would be if those shapes could detect mouse events to trigger JS and dynamically change their appearance (fill, stroke, etc...).
I'm currently trying something similar to this ([URL]) using SVG but it's just too slow in IE. I've also tried Google's SVG Web ([URL]) which basically does exactly what I'm looking for (it converts SVG to Flash in IE) but again, it's sloooooow - which is why I'm considering doing the whole shebang in Flash.

Trying to create a 2D vector. I'm getting type coercion errors when trying to store the 2nd vector inside the first.
Code:
var vector1:Vector.<Vector> = new Vector.<Vector>
var vector2:Vector.<CustomClass> = new Vector.<CustomClass>
for(var i:int=0;i<5;i++){
vector2[i] = new CustomClass()
}
vector1[0] = vector2;
1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type __AS3__.vec:Vector.<CustomClass> to an unrelated type __AS3__.vec:Vector.

I need to know the best method to find an item inside a list (Vector, Array, Dictionary, whatever is faster) of complex type (extensions of Objects and Sprites).I've used "Needle in Haystack" method, but it seems that it isn't fast enough.
E.g.Suppose that I have a collection of Sprites (a pool, in fact).Each sprite will be added to the stage and perform some action. After that, it will die.I don't want to pay the cost to dispose it (garbage collect) and create another (new) one every time so I'll keep the dead sprites in a collection.
Sometimes times I'll call a method that will add a sprite to the stage.This sprite can be a old one, if it is already dead, or a new one, if the pool don't have any free sprite.
One of the scenarios that pushed me to this question was a Particle System.A "head" particle leaving a "trail" of particles every frame and exploding into a flashy multitude of particles... Every frame...Some times this counts up to 50.000 PNGs with motion, rotation, alpha, event dispatching, scale, etc...But, this is JUST ONE scenario...At the moment I'm trying to use a Object Pool with a Linked List...Hopes that it will be faster that running a whole Array/Vector or create new instances every frame an let them dye with Garbage Collection.

Now what i want to do is,
1. create some templates in Flash CS3 <!--i want to learn -->
2. use actionscript 2.0 for coding
3. read nodes from xml <!-- i know how to do this -->
a. read the template type of the screen <!-- i know how to do this -->
b. for a particular screen on flash, load the template (made in 1) onto stage <!--i want to learn -->
c. read data from xml file <!-- i know how to do this -->
d. load the data onto template in flash. <!--i want to learn -->
I want to do this because i think re-using will make my application size smaller.
Can I do this?
