I wanted a suggestion from you guys regarding drawing and scrolling performance. The requirement is - I have to draw a graph with sound volume's values updated at 30 fps. And I need to draw this graph and simultaneously scroll to fit in the new values. So the length(width) of the graph is unlimited.
View 1 RepliesI'm working on a simple real time graph. The data is polled every 50ms, and each poll translates to a line one pixel wide, (data_point) pixels high. The graph scrolls such that new data is on the right, and the oldest values eventually fall off the left.
My solution is embarassingly brute-force, in that I just use theMC.graphics.clear() and a loop of lineTo()s for every graph refresh. While this displays correctly (and I can control the refresh rate to mitigate the CPU burn), it should be painfully evident why I want to move away from this method.
I want to programatically scroll or pan the entire graph one pixel to the left (and drop the leftmost line), and then just draw one new line on the right, but I can't figure out where to start. Assuming such a thing is possible in AS3, would someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction?

I have a movieclip that I want to be resized when a button is clicked. I want the animation to be smooth as if it had weight though. I read the tutorial on this but I need something slightly different, I would rather it where I can just refer to a function that is set in another movieclip. That way I could easily refer to it again and just set the height, width, and if possible, x, and y.
And my second question, is how to keep the border of my movieclip that is going to be resized the same thickness. I want the inside to be resized but the sides to stay the same width but move to stay on the edge.
I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.
I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.
I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?
Will I take a big hit in performance using nested ViewStacks? Should I strive to handle all navigation in one ViewStack and push children manually or will the affected performance be negligible?

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?

I'm doing a FB app with the Graph API in Flash. I've got everything working which consists in uploading some images created by the user in the app. The only part that I'm missing is how to tag these photos as with the Graph API it is not possible.
So I was wondering if it's possible to call a method of the REST API even though I'm using the Graph API.
I have two basic bar charts and I am currently using XML/SWF Charts which is great but the problem I have is I need to be able to send these graphs via email to the user. As well as display them on the site.
I know sending Flash is a bad idea, I would love to find a way to convert my current graphs to an image, but am pretty certain there is no quick fix without building a work around myself.
Therefore what are the best open source or closed solutions for this problem.I need to be able to display two graphs dynamically and then email them to users.

I'm trying to draw a static graph based on an Array of Numbers. This graph should be nice smooth sinus-like.The bottom values should be always zero, the upper values are specified in an Array of Numbers.
I've been trying to achieve this effect with curveTo(), but without any luck.
EDIT: Values are like: 10, 15, 40, 28, 5, 2, 27 etc.
How do I remake my swf for xml commands? "Remake" sounds silly, but I just want to have integer values updated by an XML file. This may be beyond my understanding. I'd like an example, a mash-up, or method I can work from.

I need to create a map of the U.S. that looks at a MySql database and highlights the states that have store locations and makes them buttons, and leaves the states that don't have store locations gray without button actions.
I understand how to create the individual states MCs with a gray state (no button) and a button state. I just need to know how to turn "on" the states from a MySql database.
This is more of a question of logic than coding.. but here goes. I've got an array of points, and when plotted on a graph in flash it shows something like this:The blue points just highlight the points of each spike. While the red points are points I want to find.My question is, how do I find the red points on each spike?At first I tried sorting through the array for the highest points, but that didn't give me all the red points as some blue points are higher than the red points.Just by looking at the graph I can immediately see the points I need, but it's a bit harder to find those using code..

My friend is now asking if there is a way to automate it so that when he puts an image into the "images" directory on the server, it would automatically recognize that and edit the .xml file accordingly to add the photo to the gallery.
