Dec 27, 2010

I am trying to set left and right margins in textfield to be a certain amount of inches. How can I do this if the margin can only be set in pixels?

Won't it change whenever the resolution change?

I want the textfield in the application to be exported as a document file and printed. Is there anyway to set the margins that they are always the same no matter what computer or resolution it is on?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Sub-class Refer/communicate With Super Class?

Jun 22, 2010

i have recently started a project that would require writing a set of classes and a small API.i know some basics of inheritance and extending classes but i still have some questions.

1) how should sub-class refer/communicate with super class.i think that dispatching events is the way to go but i have no experience on that. i have previously done it by having a parent set up a reference to itself in a subclass e.g

ParentClass.addChild(SubClass);
SubClass.myParent = ParentClass;

//i know that there is already a "parent" keyword in flash objects if i extend one but is that a decent way to communicate with super class

e.g SubClass.myParent.removeChild(this);//sounds a bad call

//but is it better if i dispatched an event that calls the removeChild() in the parent.i have is about dispatching events in a class that is likely going to be extended.

ActionScript Code:
public class Button
{
//add event listeners[code]....

//now if i extend the Button class into another class, let say ControllerButton and want that button to dispatch different event. e.g ControllerEvent, i am forced to override and rewrite all the common stuff in the handler functions.how to avoid having to override allot of common stuff.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Text Going Right To Left In Textfield After Upgrading To Flash Player 11?

Oct 12, 2011

Has anyone else noticed a lot of things breaking since flash player 11 was released? I have input text fields that display html content in them. They also have an image embed in them as well. Before people could enter text in them with no problems and now suddenly all the text types from right to left and is completely backwards?

Just to be clear it's not aligning to the right, the actual letters are coming out backwards like it might do for another language that is from right to left. These text fields are not TLFTextFields just regular textfields.

I have other textfields just like this that, but they don't have images in them and they seem to be working fine. Anyone else have this issue or know what might be causing it with flash player 11?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash - Access Player.x And Player.y From External Class?

May 8, 2011

I am trying to put together a simple game and have been doing really well until I decided I am going to have to create a new class to handle enemies.What I have so far is a player walking around on random terrains and I am up to the point where I have placed x amount of enemies on stage at appropriate times. I have written their class which will hopefully eventually handle their behavior and it outputs simple trace("BOO!").

Where I face the problem is that I obviously would like to make these enemies follow the player to attack. But when I try to access the .x or .y attributes of the player, it throws an error: 'call to a possibly undefined property with static type Class'?I have tried accessing the .x using the following ways (where badger is my player instance and Main is my class definition within the properties of the FLA):

Main.badger.x
Main(root).badger.x
Stage.badger.x

I have also tried to access other vars and still nope..My class code is this:

Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip
import flash.display.Stage

1- public static var Root:Main = this; and then call Main.Root.PublicVarName from another class.

2- make instance from the class ( var classInstance:ClassName = new ClassName() )  then to call function or var ... ( classInstance.PublicVarName ) but in this case i can't call the Main ( Document class ) as i got an error when try to create instance from Document class.

Professional :: ScriptBridge Class Provides Another Way To Communicate From JavaScript?

Jun 3, 2010

In Flash Player 10.1 and later, the ScriptBridge class provides another way to communicate from JavaScript running in a browser to ActionScript (but not from ActionScript to JavaScript). The ScriptBridge class offers significantly better performance than the ExternalInterface class, and provides access to the entire ActionScript 3.0 API from JavaScript. By contrast, the ExternalInterface class provides access only to callback functions in ActionScript.If you need to call JavaScript from ActionScript, or need to communicate between ActionScript and any other programming language

you must use the ExternalInterface API. If you need to call ActionScript from JavaScript, the ScriptBridge class is recommended. The rest of the section describes the ExternalInterface class.my research makes me believe that this new Flash Player plugin API is most likely resulting from implementing recent changes in the Netscape Plugin API. Hopefully it should be as simple as having the player script NPObject properties and functions to use to access objects, packages and classes of the flash application.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Communicate An Object To Another Class With A Getter?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Communicate With Page Class That's Not Loaded Yet?

Mar 6, 2011

I have an app with a setup page that requires the user to select a scenario for a quiz. Their choice determines the content that's loaded next.

With as2 I would have used a global variable to indicate the users choice but of course that's not longer an option, and I don't think I can send an event because the next page isn't loaded yet.

So how do I communicate with a class belonging to a dynamically loaded swf that isn't loaded yet?

Actionscript 2.0 :: Video Amount Played More Than Amount Loaded?

Feb 11, 2012

So I have been having a serious issue with custom video where flash is saying that the amount of the video so far played is MORE than the amount that it has downloaded, which is clearly impossible. This results in various problems, such as the playhead (scrubber) moving past the end of the loader bar.I posted a simple demo that displays the amount loaded and the amount played in text fields. You can see it at: URL...[code]I encoded the video at a high rate so that it would download slowly. It may not playback smoothly, which I am not concerned about. What I am concerned about is the numbers below the video what are derived from ns.bytesLoaded and ns.time. If you watch it for a bit, the amount played should exceed the amount loaded.

I double checked the video duration and the bytestotal that flash is reporting and they are correct. I don't know of any way to check the accuracy of bytesloaded.If your internet connection is super fast, you may not see the issue - it only occurs when it is playing back faster than it is downloading - if this is the case, you may need to throttle your speed down, or start downloading a large file while you are watching this demo in order to see the issue.But this is a serious issue and means that building custom video interfaces with loadbars and playheads is impossible!

ActionScript 1/2 :: Flash Player 8 & Selection Class (overall Not Working Via Code)

Jun 21, 2011

I have a simple input box with an on-screen keyboard. When I type into the box using the on-screen keyboard (adding characters to the box programatically) the Selection class overall isn't letting me control the input.I'm assuming this is a scope issue of some sort. The input belongs to one class while the onscreen keyboard belongs to another.Is the Selection glass global or is it class-scoped? Even when I pass a reference from one class to another and request Selection.getCaratIndex() from the class that generated the input it continually returns -1 which is not correct.The kicker is I can make a new AS2 document, put an input box on the screen, add text to it (all programmatically), Selection.setFocus() the input, run Selection.setSelection() to the last index of the input and Selection.getCaratIndex() returns the valid number. So there's something funky going on when classes are involved.

The only way the Selection class is working is if I use a real keyboard or mouse click, then it works fine. This isn't very useful in an on-screen keyboard context however.Are there any mines I should avoid when using the Selection class in an application where multiple other classes are involved? Is Selection really global or should I worry about scope with it?

Actionscript 3 :: Arrays - Option For Subclassing Vector Class (Flash Player 10)?

May 7, 2009

I would like to take advantage of all the goodness of the newer Vector class for FP10, but it seems it is marked as final. I am doing some intensive mathematical processing in Actionscript, and repeatedly process arrays of Numbers. I have previously been using my own subclass of Array(I call it NumericArray), with added functions such as sum(), mean(), add(), multiply(), etc. This works very well and allows for some clean OO code. However, I am finding through profiling that about 95% of my processing time occurs in the functions of these objects. I need more performance out of these arrays.

I want to use a Vector, as it provides some performance enhancements. I want to specifically use a Vector.<Number>. Unfortunately, I cannot subclass Vector as it is marked final. What is the best and cleanest way to imitate what I was previously doing with a subclass of Array, to a Vector.<Number>?

I have thought about passing around Vector.<Number> variables instead of my custom class and just using utility functions to manipulate, but this is not good OO design and will be a pain to use, not to mention ugly.

Get Flash To Communicate With A Database?

Dec 18, 2009

I have written a flash program using AS3 which allows the user to build a picture of a product using a variety of options displayed in checkboxes. Very simply these checkboxes either make a layer visible or invisible in my flash movie and certain choices may change the list of options. This information is currently being supplied by XML. Once the user has built his product, I would like to be able to save his choices in a SQL Server database and also be able to download his options again at a later date and view these choices at the manufacturing plant.

So far I have tried using asp.net to write to the database and have got the information to the asp.net program by using the querystring, however there may be up to 50 options which does make a querystring rather unwieldy. Also I cannot seem to send back information from the asp.net page to my actionscript.Can anyone tell me how to do this or give me an example? I am supposing that I use the response.write function in asp.net but what command in AS3?I looked into the possibility of using a webservice but see that AS3 no longer supports this as all the functionality is in Flex. I have read about Flex but still do not understand whether
