I want to implement something like a pick-and-change selector, like this one here, what tools can i use to accomplish something like that? Is flash adequate? Which has the shortest learning curve? I was told by my friend to use 3d max.
View 2 RepliesThere are many times that I've needed to execute some code after a number of events have fired, and I've come up with counters and such but I feel there must be a better way.For example, say five files need to be loaded, after which a UI component will become active.If I set up a counter that increments each time a file is requested, then decrements each time one has loaded, I run the risk that the first two or three files may somehow get completely loaded before my code gets around to requesting the fourth and fifth, which would mean that my counter would be at zero when I still have two files to load, thus allowing the UI component to be prematurely activated.
There are some cases where you could know the number that need to be loaded before the requests go out, but it's possible that the first file contains the paths (and therefore the number of) files.And this file-loading scenario is only an example of the pattern I'm trying to explain.)
So I have this project I'm working on and I'm trying to build the website part of my project. I have experience with Flash AS3, but not so much or none with JavaScript. My co-workers are telling me that they are almost the same and you can just build the site in JavaScript. But people can have JavaScript turned off, and not everyone uses Flash.
I'm having difficulty knowing what to use to build my website...by the way, this website is generally an application. It's going to have a menu with features and stuff. I figured I can probably do HTML and PHP, but there's some features I need that will be dynamic. I really want this site to be available to as many people as possible.
I am looking to design and add an interactive flash part to our company's website. Since we do a lot of business planning and consulting, we have come up with a great idea, but unfortunately, none of us really know how to create it. Basically from what I have researched, I will need to incorporate animated buttons in a flash movie. I have attached a quick sketch of what the website will look like. The part I need to work with is the middle section with the boxes.
What I need to do is this:
The 5 gray boxes need to be buttons that link to their related pages. When the page loads, I want the animation to draw the first box, create the line, draw the second box, draw the next line, etc. until all the boxes and lines are drawn. This is a process map and since we do a lot of these for our work, we thought it would be nice for us to incorporate this into our website. Furthermore, it would be ideal if these boxes were links to different pages on the site as well.
So my question is this:
-What do I need to create in order to have this animation work
-Where is a good place to start looking in regards to creating something like this
-Is this even possible

I'm creating an XML driven language selector which places the current language's flag (depending on the user's locale which is passed through a Flash Var parameter) at the top of the list. I've got all this working so far BUT i'm having trouble with the results. I want to be able to add onRollOver and onRelease functions to the newly created movieclips but it just ain't happening! The onRollOver function would be a bit of movement for each flag and the onRelease would call getURL using the url for that language which is contained in the XML file.

View 1 RepliesI'm integrating a Flash-free web site with Facebook Connect.Loading it in Internet Explorer 7 (only in IE 7, not IE 6 nor IE 8) I get the famous IE information bar saying that the current web site requires the Adobe Flash Player and asks me if I want to install it.
If I remove the code needed to the Facebook Connect integration (some facebook-hosted javascript files), IE does not ask me to install Flash anymore.As I've already said my web site does not require Flash at all and with IE 6, IE 8, Firefox or any other browser I'm not asked to install the Adobe Flash Player.Is this normal? Does Facebook Connect require Flash? Does it need Flash only with IE7?
I've seen a tutorial for changing the background inside of flash based on buttons to click. However, these colors were palettes and not of backgrounds such as jpeg. What I'd like to do is to create 3 buttons and place them on my flash website. These three buttons allow the user to click on them thus changing the background. So if you're visiting the about page and click one of these buttons, I don't want the user to go back to the home page after clicking.

I've been looking into having a player-controlled sprite (a UIComponent) leave a trail as it moves across the screen, avoiding other lines and trying to get to the "exit". The player-controlled sprite will be controlled by the keyboard.I've looked at "snake" games to try to sort out the best way to do this, but I'm not sure that it's the best base to start from.

But couldn't find any explanation of why they might be required or what they simply do. Any good writeup on this topic anywhere? View 2 RepliesI'm trying to make a website where you can navigate by keyboard. I'm having difficulties getting the flash file to pick up the listener when upon first logging in. Here's my website: [URL] If you click on the screen you can then press the right arrow to expand the menu. when you log onto the website I want to make it right off the bat where you press the right arrow key and the menu near the top will expand.

Again, the only way to get that keylistener to pick up pressed keys is to initially click on the screen. Is there any way to get around that?
OK, I have a flash file which has a download button. This is in a php page. We have a php session in the header named sourceID= etc....
We tried putting the following url into the flash download button same as the php links on our page - [URL] echo (int)$_GET['sourceID'] ?> but it doesnt pick up the sourceID information.
i.e what to put in the php page and what to use for the getURL link in flash.
For example, when users are connecting to this application they are given a userid var, then it's inserted into the array. So, i'm using chosenUser = usersOnlineArray[Math.round((Math.random()*usersOnlineArray.length))]; to pick another random user. But i need to make sure it doesn't pick the userID they personally were assigned so they don't end up getting themselves. how would i use that code but tell it to "remember, make sure you dont pick userid" maybe I could do something like

Right now, I have a single css file, being loaded in the main SWF tag:

And repeat for Button, TextArea, etc etc. I have so many useless warnings, it is impossible to see if there are any valid ones.
Is this warning caused by something I'm doing wrong? The styles are all being applied correctly and appears to work just the way I want at runtime.
NOTE: I've tried the -show-unused-type-selector-warnings=false compiler flag, and it does not work...that's for a similar but different warning.
