Flex :: Strategy For Making LocalConnection Ids Unique

Aug 8, 2009

I'm using a localconnection to allow communication between an actionscript 2 swf and an actionscript 3 swf.Localconnection objects share a global namespace across a user's pc.So, this means, a user can fire up my flash app in one browser, and submit commands, back and forth, which is what i want. But the user can also fire up another browser, and all commands sent to my application will be handled by the first application if its still loaded in the first browser. When I make the LocalConnection, I specify an id, but the id must be known to the actionscript 2 swfs, and therein I find a problem. I don't know how to let the actionscript 2 swfs know what the unique id is.

Flash :: LocalConnection Between Swf Sending Delay & LocalConnection Sniffer Tool

May 6, 2011

The first one (FLEX application) sends a message on a dedicated LocalConnection to a second one (Flash application). The Flash then answers by sending a message on another dedicated LocalConnection. This message is not directly received by the FLEX and the delay is at least 30s, up to 1 or 2 minutes! It seems the issue only occurs with Flash Player >= 10 and it never occurs with Chrome.

I didn't find anything on the web concerning a similar issue nor something in Flash Player release notes. Did someone already have this kind of problem?

By the way, is there any tool that can be used to sniffer LocalConnection communications?

Additional information:

swf are located in different frames swf are embed with swfobject I tried to delay the Flash sending, I tried to create another LocalConnection dedicated to this call but I always had same result: for all calls, the FLEX method is called after the same delay. I also put a timer in FLEX to periodically log to see if there is no background process delaying the method processing but everything seems fine

Flex :: Does LocalConnection In Flash Player Randomly Fail Sometimes

Jul 31, 2009

I have two flash movies communicating with each other using localConnection, passing an object from swfA to swfB. This seems to work fine, but will occasional fail. The only information we have is that the status event is fired with a level of error, there is no other information. Once a connection has failed it will continue to do so.

I don't know why it's happening but it is not a security problem (both movies are running on the same domain) and all communication is wrapped in a try..catch.

alternative method for communicating between movies? I've tried using ExternalInterface but it's too slow for the number of updates that are sent.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Strategy For Button Timer

Feb 24, 2011

My client wants me to have these vertical buttons work automatically and switch slides every 30 seconds or so without having to click on them. Then if the user clicks on any of the vertical buttons, the timer is turned off for good and it would then work how it does currently. Does anyone know of a way to place a timer on the actions that the buttons normally cause, then turn that function off once the user clicks on one?

Flex :: LocalConnection AsyncError : Dispatched When An Exception Is Thrown Asynchronously?

Nov 6, 2010

I'm working on implementing communication between an Adobe AIR app and a browser Flash object, and the LocalConnection documentation mentions an asyncError as a potential event:

asyncError: Dispatched when an exception is thrown asynchronously — that is, from native asynchronous code.

However, that's the only documentation I can find on it. Does anyone know what this error actually means? I've searched around but couldn't find any reference -- most sample code I found does an addEventListener() for the asyncError but doesn't give any clue as to what it means or when it could occur (i.e. if it could occur when sending or when recieving). The Adobe documentation page also lists potential events for each method, but asyncError isn't listed under any specific method, only for the general class.

Valid Strategy For Secure Image Upload From Flash Client?

Apr 27, 2010

I'm creating a flash application that will post images to a url for saving to disk/display later. I was wondering what are some suggested strategies for making this secure enough so that the upload is verified as coming from the application and not just some random form post. Is it reliable enough to check referring location realizing that I don't need bulletproof security, or perhaps setting authentication headers is a better strategy even though it seems unreliable from what I have read. The application and the server script will reside on the same domain and is in java - is there a way to check for a 'session' or something like that?

Another thought I had was some sort of simple hashed key type system, I could hard-code a key into the flash application and pass something to the server based on that - the server would also know this key and be able to verify if the value passed was based on that? The app is a public app, so authenticating users is not an option. After more research I am thinking about using a hard coded salt key on both ends, then sending an MD5 hash of the base64 encoded image bytearray+salt to be matched on the server side.

Flex :: Getting Unique Elements From An ArrayCollection?

I want to populate a ComboBox with UNIQUE VALUES of "appName" field from the ArrayCollection initDG.

<mx:ComboBox id="appCombo" dataProvider="{initDG}" labelField="appName"/>

One method I could think is to loop through the Array objects and for each object check and push unique appName entries into another Array. Is there any better solution available?

Actionscript 3 :: Flex CategoryAxis With Non-unique Values

Jul 27, 2009

I have a BarChart that compares different user interactions with a program we have. Obviously some users will have multiple sessions and depending on what the filtering is, a single user may have multiple entries displayed at once.

The problem comes in with the Category Axis, which uses the username as the categoryField. This is fine and displays nicely when there are no repeats of the username in the dataset. If there are repeats, though, it will put a new entry in the Y axis for each instance of the username, but all of the data is rendered on the first label in the Y axis.

Is there any way to keep the username as the category axis, but have the BarChart display the corresponding data in the correct spots?

I am building a tabbed interface for switching between various similar layers. Each layer will have a number of graphs. By dragging with the mouse the graphs can be rearranged or even moved between layers. My question is, is it best practice to register a unique mediator for each layer that keeps track of the layers content / organization, or should i keep track of it all with one central mediator.some considerations:

the layer contents and organization will be saved(in a db) so that it can be restored when a user comes back to the app.the layers themselves are functionally identical.the user can add and remove layers at will.

LocalConnection In Mac Browsers

Feb 21, 2008

I have a relatively simple localConnection between three swfs: one swf is an image gallery; another swf controls the playback of the image gallery; and the third displays xml-driven captions from the image gallery.Everything works flawlessly in a PC environment, on all browsers, using AS 2, flash player 9. But when I test in a mac environment, the captions will display on load, but it will no longer show if you refresh the page; only a cache clear and refresh will bring it back, but the same issue will happen again. The navigation doesn't work at all, ever (though the swf is loaded and visible).

Apr 23, 2009

I'm having a little issue with LocalConnection - trying to communicate from one SWF to another. From my main SWF I've loaded an external SWF of same dimensions ( effectively replacing the main SWF). What I wanted was then to re-load the main SWF, but rather than have the main SWF play from the start, I wanted to go to a specific frame instead (I used a frame label called "myMarker"). Thought LocalConnection was the way to go to achieve this. Gave it a shot and it all works well locally BUT when uploaded to server it doesn't work, but throws the following error:-

ActionScript 3.0 :: LocalConnection Limitations?

Feb 12, 2009

limits to number of SWFs that can establish local connection on MAC? The architecture is: One Manager ("server") and N number of other SWFs that communicate with the manager. When I embed more than 8 SWFs (manager + more than 7 dependents) and attempt to establish connection between them - only first 7 dependent swfs are capable to communicate with the manager on MAC (both Safary and FF). The rest are ignored. It doesn't seem to be an issue on PC where I went up to 20 and it worked (with some quirks of course). Is it a native behavior on MAC?

I did not check if number of connections is at stake (as opposed to number of swfs). There are 14 connections all together when 7 dependents are involved.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Using LocalConnection To Communicate?

Aug 19, 2010

I need dozens of AS2 Flash swfs I wrote to communicate with an AS3 swf. My code below is on the "wrapper" AS3 swf, which loads the lesson1_activity3.swf AS2 swf. This is then further nested into an Adobe Captivate-generated swf (that's what the rdcmndNextSlide method is for).

This configuration works the first time you see the wrapper/child swf together, but if you navigate back to the slide, the child swf doesn't load. I'm guessing that Captivate has all the objects still stored in memory, so it thinks I'm trying to declare var again, which I can't do. Is that it? Does anyone see the issue with my code that would make it work the first time the wrapper is loaded, but not subsequent times?
