Flex :: Tools For Profiling AS3 - Timing Functions To Find Bottlenecks?
Apr 17, 2011
I'm working with Flashpunk to make games using Flex and FlashDevelop (highly recommended, amazing lib and IDE). Since performance varies so much from system to system, I want to find where slowdowns are occurring and only fix those bits. Flashdevelop has a built in tool called Profiler, but it only shows the number of objects and the memory they are using, not the execution time. Grant Skinner wrote a great tool called PerformanceTest, but it seems suited to writing very specific optimization comparisons, not automatically profiling your code.
What I'm trying to find is a tool that will automatically analyze the program while it's running and tell me which functions are taking the longest to execute. I've heard that CS5 has this built in, but I'm wondering if there are any alternatives.

My Flex web application is almost ready for launch. I'm currently optimizing as much as I can in order to make sure even low-end clients are able to run it fluently. The problem is, I have no idea where to optimize more than I've already optimized. My question is, what are the usuals suspects regarding bottlenecks? What tips and experiences do you have when it comes to Optimizing a Flex app?

I would like to know how to manage timing in AS3.Let say I have some functions in a code and all of them trigger an animation.
A) I would like to run the functions one by one, but next function must not be triggered before the animation of the previous one is completed
B) I would like to run the functions one by one, but next function must be triggered certain time after the animation of the previous one is completed.

I am aware of the FlexCover project, but I want a code analyzer that finds the functions (and classes, I suppose) that have no calls to them at all in the source code.I suppose I could comment them out one-by-one, but that way lies madness. It's more than just tidiness: we have many versions of the same functionality and maintaining un-needed versions prevents us from getting rid over several classes and protocols that Really Need To Go Away.

I've noticed that, recently, builds in FlexBuilder have been taking much, much longer than they used to (30 or 40 seconds, as opposed to 3 or 4). What is the simplest way of profiling these builds to figure out what is taking so much time?

I have a Flex GUI which is using AMF Streaming to BlazeDS on WebLogic 9.2. As the AMF Streaming uses long polling, it keeps the connection open for extended periods of time.
WebLogic has a max thread timeout of 600 seconds. WebLogic throws an error and times out the thread if it has been alive for longer than the timeout. This causes my GUI to lose its connection and hang.
I could change the default setting in WebLogic (StruckThreadMaxTime) but this would obviously negatively effect legitimately stuck threads.

There is an ongoing argument on the web right now about the "openness" of the iPhone OS and Adobe Flash platforms. Adobe's argument is that anyone can build a Flash application without having to worry about being allowed to distribute it.
This made me wonder... is it possible to build and distribute an AIR application without giving any money to Adobe (without violating any licenses, of course)? Are any of these tools free? Are any open-source?

I'm using Flash Builder 4 on a mac. I've created a JSFL file for building a few fla's and then testing my main SWF file. I'm trying to run this JSFL file as an external tool from Flash Builder 4 but when I select Adobe Flash CS4.app as the file to run the JSFL Eclipse warns "External tool location specified is not a file."
I have Parallels installed and if I point at a .exe file this warning goes away. Is this a bug? Why can't I use a .app as an external tool in Eclipse?

So, right now when I want to find the distance between two points, I go: dist = Math.sqrt((this_x-that_x)*(this_x-that_x)+(this_y-that_y)*(this_y-that_y)) BLECH! I don't want to do that every time. So I want to make a nice little function that I can apply to an object. Problem is, I don't know how to do this. Is it possible to end up with something as easy as: Math.dist(thisclipname, thatclipname)? How do you guys set up functions that do bulky math and return nice clean numbers?

I'm developing a Flex front end client for a Java server application and I have a set of model classes that represent objects in my business logic and should have the same properties and exhibit the same behaviour throughout all layers. These objects
-Have form validation logic for user input
-Are displayed in various forms (lists, detail views ...) throughout the UI
-Are retrieved from and sent to the server using XML or AMF
-Are validated again on the server
-Are stored in a RDBM with tables and fields corresponding to the classes and fields
This is a very common application structure, I guess. I'm already using:
ORM for the Java backend (Eclipse persistence package)
Automatic mapping from XML to Action Script, using XML schema and the classes in mx.rpc.xml, as described here.
Now, what I'd really like to do is define the objects once (I already have them in XSD) and have tools set up class stubs for the whole chain. What can I use?
I've already heard of (but not evaluated):
XMLBeans to generate Java classes from XML Schema
Granite DS to generate AS classes from Java classes

I am looking for recommendations for tools for automated testing of a web application with some flex components. To provide some background we have a web application that was entirely developed in AJAX+HTML and we were somewhat successful in using Selenium for testing that application end to end. We recently added some flex components into the mix and it got complicated. We tried using Selenium Flex but we are disappointed with what it can do. So now we are looking for some alternatives. Ideally the tool would be able to drive both the web and the flex parts simultaneously, but we can also settle for just testing the flex components on their own. We prefer open source but good commercial tool is also an option.

I'm having problems setting up Ant to use with Flex.I install it fine but I get this error when I try and check the install: Unable to locate tools.jar.From what I've read, I just need to point JAVA_HOME to the directory that contains the jdk. Unfortunately,I'm not sure I know which jre I'm using in Eclipse and also, I do a search for tools.jar on my machine and it's not there???I have a C:Program FilesJava directory and there is this in there:
j2re1.4.2_05
jdk1.6.0_03
jre1.6.0.23
In Eclipse --> Windows --> Preferences --Java --> Installed JREs, it's pointing to here:
eclipse-host-distro, C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Flash Builder Plug-ineclipse-host-distro
Am I not working with a full JRE?

It is very simple to retrieve data from a database and display it inside a DataGrid. However, what are the current practices to push the changes in the DataGrid back to the database? One can achieve this by inserting a lot of meta information, however, it is very tedious and not reusable.

I have a flash application, that uses functionality in its surrounding html page. I want to do some profiling with the Flex Profiler (or some similar tool, if you know a better one).
But i cannot get it to work, if my flash app is run from within the html page. It only works, if i run the flash app alone, but that doesn't help me, because i need the full scenario.

I am profiling some AS code by measuring wall clock time. In order to minimize the error I need to run the code for a long period of time. However, flash seems to protect itself from unresponsive scripts by throwing an exception after some period of unresponsiveness, namely: Error #1502: A script has executed for longer than the default timeout period of 15 seconds.
Is there any way to disable this protection, or at least extend the timeout period?

Ok, so I have a bit of a mess here (Which I'm probably not doing right anyway, which could be my problem...). I have a document class, I'll call it as Body.as, that creates an object from another class known as Headgear.as. There are also other objects created from other classes, or will be in the future. Now, amoung all this, Headgear.as and all of the other classes Body.as will use to make objects require the use of dragging functions (starting and stopping dragging). On stopping drags, position checks are then made to compare a particular hidden movieclip with the dragged MC.
To try and save myself some hassle (from making the same functions over and over to ensuring that when the objects are created I don't need to send a complete crapload of variables just to ensure the position checking function would work), I had the functions for the event listeners (Which are set-up on the draggable MCs in Headgear.as) just direct to functions in Body.as

I have a Flex 4.6 web game which displays 2 Lists with virtual layouts with 2 custom item renderers. The renderers consist mainly of BitmapImages displaying user avatars + few Labels.
The Lists are being updated often over TCP socket with gzipped JSON data. I merge that data into 2 ArrayCollections serving as dataProviders for the Lists. This seems to work well, the Lists do not flicker and are updated correctly (I've monitored debug traces a lot to get it right).

I have a component called a TableDataViewer that contains the following pieces of data and their associated set functions:[code]This component is nested in another component as follows:[code]Looking at the trace in the logs, the call to set table is coming before the call to set dataSetLoader. Which is a real shame because set table() needs dataSetLoader to already be set in order to call its load() function. So my question is, is there a way to enforce an order on the calls to the set functions when declaring a component?
