Flex :: How To Build Interactive Data Visualizations

I'm trying to learn how to build interactive data visualizations, and I think I want to go the Flash/Flex/ActionScript route instead of using Processing.The problem is, I've never understood what the difference between all three is, so I don't know which one I should be learning.It sounds like Flash is more for designers/non-programmers, Flex is more for programmers, and ActionScript is just the programming language used in Flash and Flex (i.e., Flash and Flex are to Actionscript as the iPhone SDK is to Objective C...?). Is this correct?If so, I'm a programmer, so it sounds like I'd want to go either the Flex or ActionScript route. What's the difference between picking up an ActionScript book vs. picking up a Flex book?
i want to see if these "build a." flash sites (to support a user customized ordering process) are done using regular flash or Flex?

All of these "walk a user" through a customized ordering process and capture all of their selection and showing them all of their customizations (and ultimately bring them to a final ordering screen). What's going on under the hood on these sites and are built in flash or flex? Is the person creating a separate image for every combination that you could possibly select or is something else happening here?
I still can't figure out if Flex or Flash is better for something like this. (why does adobe make these seemingly basic questions so complicated) Are there any good resource or tutorials for try to build this type of functionality in flash on a website?
is there any lib or api out to deal with this ? EVEN, if there is any resource , article from another language c++ , c , .. i just didn't have enough time to test lot of ways

I have a server with some simple java objects running. I want to build the client with Flex and connect to the server data with BlazeDS. The problem is the Flash Builder is not generating the Classes correctly. Just the properties are being generated, the inheritance are not being generates.
In TFS 2010 build, I have a new build and I want to call an ant script that builds Flash. How do I call the ant script? Also How can I compile the Flash directly? I've seen the Power Tools and this question but it doesn't help me as we don't have TFS 2008. I can't find any documentation on how to use the power tools except the 1 sentence on the bottom of download page saying to create your build the old way and import it (which isn't very helpful). I've installed the power tools on the agent computer but I don't see any new options in the Toolbox when I'm designing the build flow.
I just started working with ant a few days ago. Right now I have a general buildall.xml which should call each project's build.xml. Because some projects depend on each other, I need to rebuild some other projects which depend on it. This isn't a problem--I'm just setting the depends property of the target. However, ant is always building the dependencies, even when the files haven't changed.Let's say project1 has no dependencies; project2 depends on project1; project3 depends on project1, 2; project4 depends on project1, 2, and 3; and so on.I could hack a solution which looks at project K, and checks if project 1 .. project K have updated files using uptodate. If so, then run the target. This is messy and appears unnecessary.
What is the cleanest way to implement this?EDIT: So I decided to just hack in a bunch of targets, "check_projectK" where it does the uptodate checks on all of its source files, its build file, and the build files of the 1 .. K-1 projects. Due to dependencies, this is always handled correctly. However, this is still a large amount of copy and paste for a large workspace.
I'm building an application which will have a control to play, pause, step forward & step back through different versions of my visualisation - like the controls on your tape deck, but moving my visualisations through time, instead of that battered old Simon & Garfunkel recording.
I would have thought that my various animations would listen out for a particular event which fires on each 'beat' and tells it the time currently on the time line. My 'play' button then kicks off some code which causes one of these 'beat' events to be fired every second (or 5 seconds, depending on the speed selected). The 'step forward' button would cause a single event to be fired, and so on.
Assuming my design makes sense, I'm not clear how I would generate those events at regular intervals. Alternatively, my design might not make sense or be the most effective one for the job.
got a problem with a ByteArray visualization that i'm trying to get working. I'm trying to use 2 visualizations on stage, one to represent the left 256 data values, and one to represent the right data values. as opposed to doing a mirror image (which i have tutorials for) I am trying to get 2 separate visualizations on different parts of the stage. this is my code:

Currently, the left visual works fine - but the right visual is still displaying the same sequence as the left. When I pan the audio fully right, both the visualizations go dead - and start working again when I pan central/left.
Do flash 3D display engines such as Papervision allow data to be exported from the swf to a php back end and vice versa (PHP into model)? Does Unity allow for this?
If I was to build a simple 'change the colour of the model' application with a UI in a 3D package such as Papervision, could I then export the user choices to php or perhaps a javascript intermediary?
This is the situation: I am trying to build an uploader that will take data collected earlier in the form before the upload occurs and then rename the uploaded file with it. I've gotten the upload itself to work, but thus far I have no luck getting any sort of renaming to work, not even by PHP. I tried Loadvars to transfer the variables over and rename it during upload, yet it says "NO" and rejects the post variables when the upload occurs. I even tried loading the variables into an external file and transfering them back to the uploader via cookie, all at the same time. Again it says "NO!", and the file is uploaded as __"filename".jpg. This is my code thus far:

I'm looking for a way to take SVG path info (basically a string of coordinates) and dynamically draw it with Actionscript. Icing on the cake would be if those shapes could detect mouse events to trigger JS and dynamically change their appearance (fill, stroke, etc...).
I'm currently trying something similar to this ([URL]) using SVG but it's just too slow in IE. I've also tried Google's SVG Web ([URL]) which basically does exactly what I'm looking for (it converts SVG to Flash in IE) but again, it's sloooooow - which is why I'm considering doing the whole shebang in Flash.
I'm completely new to FMS but a seasoned Flex developer. We're building a Flash Builder 4.5 application which will be deployed to iPads. The basic functional requirements are as follows:
1. Presenter in a room has a camera streaming video of themselves2. Participants in the same room have an iPad - there are 30 participants and the stream is sent to all 30 iPads simultaneously.3. There must be lowest delay possible with good quality video - we understand this can be achieved with RTMP and that VP6 has to be used (as there is no H.264 support at present in AIR on iOS)4. The presenter will trigger certain things from their iPad which will then display certain alerts, content on the partcipants iPad (from server connection the participant iPads are listening to)
Firstly, I'm interested to know your thoughts on this current spec. This was put together from zero initial experience with FMS and having read a lot online and creating a proof-of-concept. Secondly, with regards to the two-way interaction: Is this something FMS handles? Previously I have used LCDS or BlazeDS for the data events & streaming aspects of our applications. Initially I was planning on using BlazeDS again, in addition to FMS. But from what I have read FMS possible handles data push too? Does FMS have LCDS/Blaze built in in some way?

The structure is All days are in array <periods>
How can i read and parse data in a flash movie for each day? Just give me an example of the first two days _pdayname and the params _pmax _pmin for <max> <min> and <mid>
I'm trying to build a flex project, linking it to some RLSs. When setting up the project in Flex Builder, the corresponding "build configuration" (that I got by adding -dump-config to the compiler options) generates (among other things) a tag like this :
i have a mobile application that i am attempting to use to load an interactive .swf file. At first, i was just going to use the .mxml applications from my other project file in flex, but they're for desktop apps and running on Flex 3.6, and Mobile apps can't be built on less than 4.5 :P
so, i figured i'd export the first project to a .swf, and load it in my mobile application, but nothing i do will get it to show up. anyone know a solution?
Using FDT, when I have a debug configuration with several operations in the launcher chain and the final launcher opens in Flash Player, how can I retrieve the build output from the console once the build is complete and Flash player is running?
It seems that once Flash Player has started the console clears to make way for the application's trace output, but I need to be able to look back over the events and build times for each item in my launch chain while Flash Player is running. Is there a setting I can enable to either log my build output to a file or to preserve it in the console?
Edit: I know I can still read the info when building normally, this question is specifically for building with the debugger.
I can use Maven with FlexMojos to generate swf file, but because I have several mxml files need to build, could I build them in 1 Maven pom file?I know if I separate them into several projects, Maven can build them. But because these mxml files have some shared functions, it's not easy to manage if I separate them.Another question is the size of swf file. The original file size build by Flex builder is about 80KB, but the file size by Maven is about 800KB. Is it normal?

My company have a web application product for distribution planning and scheduling. An important part of it is a gantt chart component where user can fine tune the schedules. Currently the gantt chart component is pure javascript+dhtml.I am currently looking into the possibility of moving to Flex to get richer interactivity and generally nicer UI.
The question is: is there any good interactive gantt chart component for Flex?By "interactive" I mean that user can interact with the gantt chart and modify data using it, as opposed to just seeing it as part of a reporting use case.
I'm looking to display some data in the form of charts (line graphs, pie charts etc). I also require them to have a certain amount of interactivity (pan, zoom etc.).
For these requirements, will Adobe Flex be enough for me, or would I need to use flash?
A little research told me that building charts in Flex is easy, but can they be made interactive without using Flash?
I'm a seasoned Flash developer and have just recently switched to Flex, but so far I've been having a hard time with creating the right kind of components. For instance, in Flash if I wanted to add a complex interactive menu, I would have a menu clip in the library, then export it for ActionScript, assign a class to it and add it to stage. How would I do something like this in Flex? It seems all I can do is expand the UI Components, and none of them is really suitable for what I want to do
We'd like to have an app autorun when our clients put in our info CD. Is it possible to do this using Adobe AIR... We were thinking of using the Flash Projector cause it compiles to an .exe which is easily launched, but there's no way to get rid of the ugly window chrome is there?
I have a nice looking fxg button, to which I want to attach a tooltip- how do I achieve that without much hassle? (the spark button does this out-of-box, but is not very visually pleasing)The examples I have seen on search is reverse- using fxg effects in the tooltip.
