Flex :: Mxml - Dynamically Resize Parent Container To Contain Children

Feb 11, 2010

Is there an easy way to make a parent container (eg Group) resize when it's children resize?

Below is a little example app. When I put the 200x200 'food' in the 'stomach' the stomach & it's containing 100x100 'body' should resize to contain the food.

<mx:HBox backgroundColor="0xDDFF11" width="100%" height="100%" />

</components:CustomGroup>

Flex :: VGroup - (Parent) Container Does Not Change Height With Children?

May 13, 2011

I have code like the following:
<s:VGroup gap="10" id="group" height="100%">
<s:Label text="This is page 2" />
<s:Button content="Resize Canvas" click="resize(event);"/>
<mx:Canvas id="photoCanvas" color="#567898" backgroundColor="#125567">
</mx:Canvas>
</s:VGroup>

I don't understand why the following does not work:
Pushing the Button resizes the photoCanvas's height (gets taller or smaller). Since the photoCanvas control is a child element of the VGroup shouldn't the container update itself to the new height? The Vgroup has ALWAYS the same height, no matter what the (total) height of the children is! I would like the VGroup to adjust itself and get a height value equal to the sum of its children heights. Is this not possible??

ActionScript 3.0 :: Prevent Parent Resize When Children Is Added?

Dec 23, 2009

I have a rectangular movieClip named 'container'. In this movieclip, a function generates some number of squares.My problem is that; for example, if I generate 12x12 squares with each width/height of 40; it resizes the container to width/height of 480. If I set the width and the height of the container movieClip to a lower value; then the squares become smaller.I have been struggling for some time on this problem. I tried setting the ScaleMode of container and squares to various values but it did not work.How can I overcome this illogical (for me at least) problem? How can I prevent children from resizing their parent OR how can i prevent parent downsizing the children?

ActionScript 3 :: Custom MXML Container In Flex 4

Jul 22, 2010

I want to make a custom container, usable in MXML like:
<local:MyContainer>

But I'd like to be able to catch when the children are added so that I can control stuff like when & where they're added. I tried overriding addChild(), addChildAt(), addElement(), addElementAt(), (extending the Group class) but they only fire when you add elements specifically with those functions - the application launches and the label, button, etc, end up in MyContainer without calling these functions. How do I control the addition of sub-components via MXML?

Flex - Container's Clipped Children Not Visible On Scrolling?

Mar 30, 2011

I have a VBox inside a Canvas. The 'red bars' are custom components based on 'Canvas'. All red bars are of equal height. I have 20 red bars inside the VBox. The scrollbars visible in the screenshot are the Canvas's scrollbars. The scrollbars of the VBox are disabled using verticalScrollPolicy = off.

Without scrolling, only 16 red bars (and a part of the 17th bar) are visible. However, when I scroll down the Canvas I expect to see the remaining red bars - but the bars that are not visible when the application starts don't get 'drawn'. What am I doing wrong? I want the user to be able to see the 17th - 20th bars when the Canvas is scrolled down.

Flex :: Fill Parent In Adobe / MXML - Implementing Layout?

Dec 6, 2011

I am attempting to implement a layout in Adobe Flex 4.5 / MXML where I have multiple controls in an HBox that - in total - consume all available horizontal screen estate. Some use a relative with (percentage), some an absolute width (pixels) and one is supposed to consume whatever space is still left, such as:

+----------------------+-----------------------+------+
| 35% | fill parent | 10px |
+----------------------+-----------------------+------+

How would I achieve this in Flex (is there something comparable to Android's
layout_width="fillparent")?
Due to the fact that there are elements that have an absolute width I cannot easily calculate the width of the filler as a percentage a priori (as it varies with the screen width). Setting the filler's width to 100% also does not work as this will shrink the 35% area below 35%. Applying the updateDisplayList suggestion from www.Flextras.com's answer below yields the error "Call to a possibly undefined method updateDisplayList" at the line marked in the source excerpt below:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flex Forcing App Children To Redraw On Resize?

May 19, 2010

Is there a simple way to force all the child components of a Flex app to redraw when that app is resized?

For instance, I have a HDividedBox with percentHeight and percentWidth set to 100. On the left hand side of the divided box is a data grid and on the right side is a number of text inputs. The divided box is not added to the view stack until after the user logs on.

If I resize the app before the HDividedBox is added then the box takes up the full size of the app, whatever that may be. However if i resize the app after the box appears then the box retains the same dimensions it does when it was first added.

I would have expected that on the resize of the app then all the children would redraw (the application component itself appears to).

Flex :: Prevent Dragging Outside The Parent Container In Flash?

Nov 22, 2010

I have a canvas onto which I draw shapes like rectangle etc. When I move the shape using my custom mouse down/mouse move handler, the shape can go outside the parent bounds.

I am checking if the child is outside the parent's bound to snap it back:

var bounds:Rectangle = this.getBounds(this.parent);
var p:Point;
if (bounds.x <0) {

[Code]...

The snapInside method gets called when I go outside the left or top boundary. But when the child is dragged outside the right or bottom boundary, I find Flex/Flash runtime automatically expands the parent's height and width. So say the parent size was initially 800x600, if child Y bounds exceed 800 by say 20 pixel, I find the this.parent.height automatically resized by flex to 820!!

How do I prevent the parent from resizing when child goes outside the original bounds of the parent ?

Flex :: Make A Container Resize Based On The Size Of Its Contents?

Mar 16, 2010

I'm trying to create a Flex application that can automatically shrink based on the size of the components that it contains, so that a user can shrink it to a minimal view to see more of the HTML page it's embedded in.

I know how to change the size of the whole application using ExternalInterface, but I'm having trouble automatically figuring out how much the size changed when something is hidden or shown.

For example:

Let's say I have the following flex layout:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="vertical">
<mx:VBox width="100%" paddingTop="0" paddingBottom="0"

[Code]....

How can I hide one of the text fields and cause the VBox to shrink? I'm currently setting it to visible = false, but that doesn't seem to affect the parent VBox.

Once the VBox shrinks, how can I detect that the Application no longer needs so much space, and then go about figuring out how much less space it needs?

I've tried using ResizeEvent, but I haven't been able to get them to work, but I could be doing something wrong.
