Flex :: Performance - Printing From AIR/Flex Application Causes Large Files Being Sent To Printer?
Oct 25, 2010
I am working on an Adobe AIR (2.0) application that contains a feature to allow users to print documents (such as salary slips). Those documents are originally in PDF format. Due to circumstances we cannot directly display those PDFs in the AIR application (for example using flash.html.HTMLLoader). Therefore we convert the PDFs to SWFs (using the pdf2swf tool, see The SWFs are loaded into the application using a mx.controls.SWFLoader, like so:
<mx:SWFLoader
id="salarySlipImage"
loaderContext="{someLoaderContext}"

There is a wide known issue with printing of Flash content in Firefox and Chrome browsers.So,one solution was created by "AnyCharts".But it seems not to work.I also tried to implement the latest version of the component that is now hosted and Google Code.I did exactly as the manual prescribes but it still doesn't work.AnyChart guys say on their blog page that something should be done with CSS as well ,but as you can see from the manual at Flash-Print-Fix home page ,there is no mention about CSS setup. My code works like this:

I'm preparing to reorganize & refactory a Flash Builder application. The goals of the reorg are 1.) keep compile times for the part of the project I'm working on as fast as possible, 2.) keep the unrelated parts separate for code reuse. Goal #1 trumps goal #2 if there's a trade-off.
Currently, the app has assets in one project, core functionality AS3 in another project, and the MXML in a third project that links to the other two.
Would moving resources/code into swc libraries help compile time? What about compiling assets into an swf and embedding that into the main application?

A client needs a standard consumer color printer for printing name badges from my flash app. Last time we used the app, I couldn't do any pre-testing of their computer and printer beforehand. So, of course, the margins were completely wrong when the time came to print. Ideally, I'll have the flash app's bugs worked out for the next run, but for safety's sake does anyone know of a printer that has good controls for custom margins and offsets, in case some minor adjustments are needed?

I've an AIR app which prints a couple of DataGrids with approximately 3 pages worth of data each. I get great-looking printouts, but the printing is slow - I noticed that printing these 6 pages + a title page and a page of lightweight images was sent to the printer in a file of almost 50 MB (on Windows). Is this a normal size for a printed DataGrid? Is there anything I can do to make it smaller and faster?

I want to create a fairly large-scale Flex web application that has a similar interface style to Grooveshark.
When it comes to web development, I have always used the common PHP/HTML/JavaScript technologies. Now, I want to try something new and develop a RIA using Flex.
Using PHP/HTML/JavaScript, I am able to develop my entire website with free tools. Now, I'm wondering if I am able to do the same thing with a Flex web application?
Is it possible/feasible to develop a Flex web application for free? If not, what would be the lowest cost I would need to spend? And, whatever the option, what are the tools that would be needed?

I have a flash application which consist of Grid Components, Button, Label, and Combo-box Components. All these components are used more than 70 times(simultaneously) with in the application. So Its takes too much of memory. So How can I test the memory usage of each component at the time of running. Is there any plug-in available for browsers to find the memory usage. I'm using flash CS3 and ActionScript 3.0. The application suppose to run in browsers.

<mx:Script><![CDATA[

And that large library isn't referenced from my main application, except through MyModule

I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.
I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.
I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?

I've run into some problems trying to handle large text files in AIR (300+ MB in size). I can open a filestream and read the file just fine and even store it into a string variable. the problem occurs when i try to manipulate this data. Im trying to get each line as an element in an array so i can manipulate this data.Here's what i've tried:1. read the file into a string variable and perform a split looking for the newline character ). this freezes the program2. i've tried reading the file in one byte at a time and putting each line into an array AS it is being read from the filestream. This not only takes long but eventually freezes.
3. i've tried splitting the final string variable which contains the entire text file into chunks to process it separately.4. i've even tried putting the file contents into a sqlite database, but this also freezes.At this point, im not sure what my options are. Is AIR even equipped to manipulate data at this level? I could use a point in the right direction

Will I take a big hit in performance using nested ViewStacks? Should I strive to handle all navigation in one ViewStack and push children manually or will the affected performance be negligible?
eg.

<tabnavigator />
<tabnavigator />
</viewstack>

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?

I've created a Flex application and the size of the swf file is ~900KB. My trouble is that the files are not getting cached. When I launch the application for the second time, the swf file is fetched again from the server. I'm including the swf file in a jsp, and I'm not modifying any HTTP Caching Headers. I assumed that the swf files will be cached automatically. Isn't it so? How do I forcefully cache the file? Do I need to provide anything in the MXML code or just a response.setHeader("Cache-Control","max-age=100"); is enough? Can anything be done from the flex side itself?

If I try to add ~70 High Resolution Sprites to a PrintJob using addPage() in a loop, I suffer a lot of slow down and performance issues.I am thinking I should perhaps create individual print jobs for each page, or maybe batch them together.

I'll ONLY recieve an "Error #3000: Illegal path name" if I try to open a file which is placed inside the app-folder of the air. If the file is somewhere else outside of the app-folder it works.
private var file:File = File.documentsDirectory;
public function download():void{
var pdfFilter:FileFilter = new FileFilter("PDF Files", "*.pdf");
[Code]....
When i try to get the same file and copy it to another place it's doing fine.
Why that? Something special to do if i wanna open files which are inside the appfolder? It also don't work in debug mode - bin-debug.

I haven't written anything in Flex in a couple years and much has changed since. I used Flash Builder 4.6 to build my app now I want to deploy it to a ASP.NET application. What files other than the swf do I need to deploy to ensure everything works for my users? I see in the bin-debug folder of the project it spits out a bunch of swfs (framework, rpx, playerProductInstall, spark, etc) and the swfobject.js. Do I need all these files deployed to the same location as my swf?

I am working with a very large number of legacy SWFs written in AS1 and AS2. These SWFs use loadMovieNum extensively.
I am trying to integrate these into a new Air-based app (written in either AS3 or Flex). However, loadMovieNum doesn't seem to work within the Air app.
For example, an AS2 SWF (file1.swf) may try to load another AS2 SWF using:

I'm developing an application using Flas Builder / Flex for Adobe Air. This application will be processing a large set of static text (100 - 200 MB) using a variable set of processing instructions.The target platforms will be iOS, Android and Desktop.The data set can be either one large XML file or broken into a bunch of XML files about 3MB each.This will be decided at design time.From your experience would it be better to store the text in an Adode Air database or a set of XML files for best performance (including speed and battery life)?What other considerations should I take into account?

i have a AS3/FL10 based application that renders/animates/filters (blur) large PNGs (1 per view) (about 1100x900 px, roughly 2mb). Due to the fact that the fans start spinning like crazy on my notebook, i wonder if this is considered "bad practise". Unfortunately i need transparent images, so JPG is not a choice. Additionally, the PNGs are loaded dynamically, so embedding the files to the flash file (for utilizing flash jpg compression) is not a choice either.
How do you guys deal with large bitmaps in flash
