As you might know, browser's security model does not allow a script loaded in a page from http:[url]... to make cross-domain requests (no AJAX calls to any other domain other than url...).The Javascript file itself could have been served from a different domain altogether (url....) and that is irrelevant. This is the Same-Origin Policy.
Flash also has something similar? But does Flash treat the origin to be the HTML page where the .swf file was loaded or origin is the domain which served the .swf file?
So http:[url]... loads a .swf file from http:[url].... Now .swf can load resources only from [url].... or only [url....? I'm assuming there are no cross-domain.xml files setup on either [url]....

I want to create an extremely simple chat where any client can log into this webpage, two windows, one to enter text and the other to see messages. Very irc-like. How do I resolve the communication? In Director there was the multiuser server that let you talk among swfs, is there something similar in Flash MX? Or should I resort to php/mysql as the only way to go?

I'm working on a project that originally required me to use <area> elements and 40 copies of a single GIF image to have a hoverable and clickable <img> tag. I suggested SVG, and the client agreed to use SVG instead, as it was easier to work with for both of us.
Anyways, my question is, what cross-browser JavaScript SVG library will allow me to display and interact with pre-made SVG images.
I know of these libraries:
Raphaël: I'm currently using this along with a SVG loading plugin. But that plugin does not support Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator SVGs (i.e. most SVGs). cang: This library looks promising, but it requires <canvas> support, which IE doesn't have natively. svgweb: Another more-promising library. It requires Flash, but most IE users have Flash. jQuery SVG: It seems to be able to load SVG images, but development seems to have died. And it requires me to use a modified version of jQuery 1.3.
My client would like to provide somewhat-arbitrary images to my script and have chunks of them be "selectable" (see my demo here).

I am looking for a free plugin in flash or flex or something else that will allow me read pdf files and which I can integrate in my website. Do you know some?
UPDATE: I get the impression my question wasn't clear enough so,I am developing a website using asp.NET and I have a requirement to display a pdf file to the user so he could read the file and paging between files.I am looking for an open source plugin that I can integrate in the website. I don't really mind the technology of the component - but I prefer something in flash or flex.My problem is that the web application will run on a computer without an internet so I need something I can download and use without internet connection.

I'm building a server-side API and client-side library for a JavaScript-based game where two very important features must be secured. A user must be debited for each play We must ensure that the score that gets submitted is the actual earned score by the player. Solving the first problem seems simple; at the beginning of each play we hit the API, debit the user's account and return a unique Play ID. When we submit the user's score for that play, we pass the ID issued at the beginning.
The second one has me a little stumped. Initially I considered a client-side hashing algorithm based on the ID and the score, but quickly realized that the Javascript that produces the hash could easily be reverse-engineered, even if it was obfuscated. At this point I considered a small flash component that generates the hash, but I've heard that even compiled flash can be decompiled.

I would very much like to determine the IP# of a domain from client script. It's for use in a testing application to determine whether or not a certain domain is set to a QA address as opposed to the address live on the . The testing machine will have it's host file set to resolve a domain to the QA address.Pinging from the server won't help since the server is getting the public DNS address.

As the site will be totally in flash, there is no use of JavaScript required. So, what is the best way to embed a SWF file into a web page without using JavaScript. And why do you consider it to be the best one?

I'm working on a web page which will display information updated periodically via javascript. I want to have it displayed in a Solari Board, complete with the flipping tiles animation. Is there an existing Flash or Javascript implementation I can use? Here's my super-lousy javascript test for one letter. The solution should take a string and figure out how to flip the existing letters to update it. On a real board they all start at once and each stop after the number of flips needed.

My friend has a Flash script that draws Pacman on top of his homepage. The bug is that the flash animation doesn't let him click on his page.I'm trying to convince him to use Processing.js instead, but I'm not sure whether even Processing can blot on arbitrary parts of a webpage (e.g. by using a canvas the same size as the page but letting clicks through).Processing-specific issue: Filling the canvas (e.g. background(white);) obscures any HTML elements that might have displayed under the canvas.

I want to create a kind of "flash button" in a web page. It just like the volume controller of windows operating system. When we click the button or the bar and hold it to roll down or roll up then we can change the volume. Actually, I want to use it to control the speed of switching picture in a web page. For example, intially, the images will switch from one to the other in a default speed--image/5seconds. There is a kind of slide bar just like I described above, I can roll the button to left or right to control the speed of switching.

We want a web app that allows a user to edit images on the browser and we're trying to decide which technology to use. We want to support simple image customization, such as high-quality resizing, cropping, image merging, and color transformations, as well as the addition of text elements with different fonts and colors.
The current options are: Flash: no worries about cross-browser compatibility; could use same image library on client and server; no iPhone/iPad support. Java (compiled to javascript with GWT): need to find a good image library in pure Java so it can be compiled to JS. Plain old javascript + HTML5: may be a mess due to multiple browsers; may need to write image editing code from scratch. Here's what's most important to us / criteria for choosing:
Image consistency: the image that the client edits on the browser must be exactly the same as the one we'll eventually use on the backend. We can achieve this by (a) having the same library both on the client and server to process images, (b) having the client generate the image and upload it to the server, or (c) use two different image processing libraries on the client/server and hope for the best in terms of consistency.
Option (a) seems best, but it would only be possible if we use Flash or Java/GWT. We don't like option (b) because the images are large; we'd rather save a sequence of operations to perform on a raw image than saving multiple transformed images. And we don't really know if option (c) is safe or not. Scalability: We prefer the client to do as much work as possible to decrease server load. Image quality must be kept high
Cross-platform: We'd like to support as many platforms as possible without rewriting everything (big negative for Flash due to iPhone/iPads).

Today I heared something weird from someone, he said that using Javascript at the front end with Oracle DB that gives high performance than the performance if used Flash(ActionScript) with Oracle, while MySQL have the same performance with any client side scripting. Is that right?, Does client side scripts have anything to do with DBMS ?

Basically I'll be working with large XML files (approx. 20 - 50 MB). These files needs to be uploaded on a server.I know it isn't possible to touch the files with javascript, nor to implement HTTP compression on the client-side.
My question is that if any solution exists (flash / action script) that compresses a file and has a javascript API? The scenario is this:
Trying to upload 50 MB XML file Before upload a grab it with Javascript and send it to the compressor.Upload the compressed file instead of the original one.

I have a flash app, that redirects to another page. I'd love to trap any other window unload event (clicking links / submitting forms) and warn the user they'll lose their progress in the Flash app. However, I can't find any way to tell that the click/change of URL/window unload was triggered by Flash vs being triggered by a normal link etc. Is there any way to detect this, and how reliable is it?

I am trying to use IE8's IWebBrowser2 interface to obtain a webpage's embedded flash's url, height, width information. This flash can be generated by javascript. So I did like this: from IWebBrowser2 I got IHTMLElementCollection, then I iterated through the collection to get IHTMLObjectElement2,and finally called get_data() to get flash's url.
But when I tried to extract flash object's url for [URL], get_data() returned "null". Why is this?So what's the difference between IHTMLObjectElement2 and IHTMLElement2? What's the right way to obtain IHTMLElement2 from IWebBrower2?

I listen to internet radio at [URL] and it works pretty well, except for one minor issue. The Flash applet that runs the radio player has a timer on it, where if you don't move the mouse over the player every once in a while, it decides you're idle and shuts off the stream, even if you're not actually idle, but just working on something else with the radio player running in the background.
Is there any way I can send a fake MouseOver message to this applet to keep it from cutting me off in the middle of a song, maybe with a GreaseMonkey script? I'm using Firefox.

I have an upload form for an image. The user clicks browse and selects a file. How can I get the image dimensions the moment the user selects the file (before the file is even uploaded to the server). It obviously has to be something client-side with maybe javascript/jquery or flash/flex (prefer js//jquery though), but can either of them do this? This is the code I'm using to tie into zozo's getImgSize() function, but it gives me 0*0 as size.

I'm looking a quick way to add an (multi) image unloader with client side crop to an ASP.NET MVC site and for some reason the search seems to be much more complicated than I thought upload image (can be via form post or custom, just has to work with ASP.NET)custom crop possibility before upload (preferred) multiple images at once It doesn't matter if js/jquery, silverlight or flash is used, it just has to work, its an internal application and I can force people to have the necessary plugins installed.

We have a flash website built using flex and CS3. Majority of the site has been done using flex. We have multiple flash movies on a page and we obviously have the page loading very slow. Now that we are looking into options for making the page fast, we are trying to understand whether we can run these flash movies in parallel ? Is there some provision in CS3 to make the flash understand that this object will be loaded and ran first and then the second object.

I have a cms where my client loads banner ads from their clients. They don't know the dimensions or don't want to enter them when they upload the banners. Is it possible to capture the dimensions to set the object attributes as we grab the movies from the db to display in the page?I read that the movie dimensions are available in the loaderinfo object, but this is a AS3 object right? Are AS3 objects available outside the flash movie? Can I access the loaderobject via javascript? The Flash movies we're trying to load are not ours, we don't have access to the flas or anything like that so we can't edit anything to do with the movies themselves.
