Arrays :: Flash As3 Best Way To Create Multidimensional Array?
May 13, 2011I have an array of movie clips (representing band members) which have various properties, among them them a property which tells where the band member went to after they left their current band. For those who formed a new group, I want to create an array. Within that array, I want to group all the ones that left for the same group into secondary arrays. So, if you had five band members and 2 of them left for group X and 3 left for group Y. What's the best way to do this? This is, roughly, my code:

Alternatively I suppose if I could do without a multidimensional array and just loop through all the members and say - for those members whose group is the same, perform this function, with the name of that same group passed as the parameter for the function. I guess the trouble I'm having is identifying who's the same.

Dec 12, 2011I want to create a simple array of points, representing a clockwise set of coordinates at 45 degree increments, such that the array would be (starting from 12 o'clock):

I'm looking for the most efficient way of creating this array (ideally with the coordinates themselves generated through some sort of equation). What's the best way to do this? All I want to do with these is create a coordinate on the stage relative to the clips current coordinate in which to move, based on that clips, such that if the move distance for clips was 50px, and the clip had a depth of 0, it would move 50px in the coordArray[0] position, or 0*50 in the x direction, and -50px in the y direction (0,-1).

Oct 7, 2009Suppose you have a round based RPG type game. The player issues directives to his units, your enemy AI issues directives to its units. The problem is that the functions for those directives then have to be executed in a specific order with no relation to the order they were input in and all at the same time with the push of one button.
I just need a little direction here, I just spent the last fifteen minutes searching "AS3 Array of Functions" before figuring out that maybe that's not the way you do it in AS3.
Essentially, I'm looking for the way to store functions, put them in a list to be sorted in a specific order and then execute them in said order.

Nov 9, 2009This is my first time using Actionscript in probably 4 years and I'm learning everything all over again. For example, here's what I tried to jump right into doing and just realized I don't remember how. I'm trying to generate a world map out of tiles I created in Photoshop. I've created a symbol in the library for each tile and want to use an array and a for loop to create the full map.
So far I seem stuck on creating the array itself. I've started by creating a variable for each tile that exists such as m73 = "Lake South" where "Lake South" is the name of the symbol in the library. The full map will be a 32x32 grid of tiles but for now (until I get it working) the array is much smaller. An example of it is like this:
worldMapArray = [m4,m4,m4,m4]
[m0,m4,m4,m4,]
[m17,m16,m16,m16];
Hopefully this is enough to convey what I'm trying to do. However, when I use something like trace(worldMapArray[0][1]); it comes up as undefined. I've already created the needed for loops that use attachMovie for each iteration in the array, but as the array itself isn't set up right nothing happens.
