ActionScript 2.0 :: Displaying Special Character Such As "<" ?

Aug 6, 2010

i'm trying to display this character "<" from an external txt file. Some how it doesnt work. I know that for some characters you have to change the code, examples if you want to display "+" you have to change it to %2b. I read in adobe.com that for "<" you have to change it %3c, and yet it doesnt work.

Actionscript 3.0 :: Zendamf Not Handling Special Character Data

May 29, 2009

I've written an application that deals with multiple languages, English, French, etc, I'm using Zendamf to retrieve multi-language data from a database, however, I'm running into a problem using Zendamf, and it could kill this project fast:

There seems to be an issue passing special character values via Zendamf. While querying a database that returns data including French-text characters (ie: Québec), the result returned from Zendamf is not handling the special characters (ie: instead of Québec, we receive Quc).

I've checked the output of the data via Php: the issue is not with the database result - the characters are returned correctly from the database to the Php result-set - I am able to print these characters correctly before they are sent through Zendamf, either by rendering them in HTML or by writing them to a log file.

However, once I plug the SQL result into an object and pass it to Zendamf, the special characters get mangled. Using Charles Web Debugging Proxy, I can see that the result values are mangled before they are passed back to my AS3 application.

I have an swf on the page which has some textfields on it each of which are just using arial for their font and no embedded fonts.

Now when someone types an @ into one of the textfields the " character is displayed instead, I thought this would be because my browser is set to ISO-8859-1 character encoding, but changing it UTF-8 and refreshing makes no difference.

The instance name for the character is char and the Var for the dynamic text is alpha. I want to be able to display the characters alpha and ALSO the characters current alpha in other levels for example.

Variable for lives in level 1:
_root.lives = 5;
Variable for lives in level 2:
_root.currentlives = lives;

I want to be able to do the exact thing but display the 'char' alpha instead.

Data Integration :: Unwanted Character Codes (& Etc) From XML Displaying In Flash?

Aug 27, 2006

I have a static, UTF-8 encoded XML document that gets loaded by a custom movie clip class into an array and then items from the array are read and displayed in a dynamic text field that is attached to the movie clip,depending on which one is rolled over.Everything works perfectly except that an ampersand displays as & apostrophes display as ' and quotes display as ", even if I use the special character inside the XML.Higher level character codes actually display properly, so character codes for circle shaped bullets,registered trade mark symbol, Greek characters, etc, work! But a blessed ampersand does not.Setting the dynamic text field to either read as HTML or not read as HTML makes no difference.

Using CDATA tags in the XML makes no difference.In fact,when I use CDATA tags and enclose text containing a special character code, Flash goes the extra step of converting the ampersand in the special character code to &!! So" becomes "Using & just gets converted to &.So Flash's XML parser is parsing the & to an ampersand,which Flash's text parser then converts to &. WHY? And how do I stop it?

I found the function below to clean out the unwanted characters,and it works,but it seems a ridulous length to go to.And I probably have to extend it to accomodate whatever other characters don't work in Flash, but I don't know what those might be until I encounter them. Also,the function works whether I use a special character in the XML or not. ie, if I put an actual "&" into the XML, this function will display "&" and if I put & into the XML,it will still display as "&".

Php :: Special Characters In Flex?

Jan 4, 2010

I am working on a Flex app that has a MySQL database. Data is retrieved from the DB using PHP then I am using AMFPHP to pass the data on to FlexThe problem that I am having is that the data is being copied from Word documents which sometimes result in some of the more unusual characters are not displaying properly. For example, Word uses different characters for starting and ending double quotes instead of just " (the standard double quotes). Another example is the long dash instead of -.All of these characters result in one or more accented capital A characters appearing instead. Not only that, each time the document is saved, the characters are replaced again resulting in an ever-increasing number of these accented A's appearing.

Doing a search and replace for each troublesome character to swap it for one of the none characters seems to work but obviously this requires compiling a list of all the characters that may appear and means there is scope for this continuing as new characters are used for the first time. It also seems like a bit of a brute force way of getting round the problem rather than a proper solution.Does anyone know what causes this and have any good workarounds / fixes? I have had similar problems when using utf-8 characters in html documents that aren't set to use utf-8. Is this the same thing and if so, how do I get flex to use utf-8?

ActionScript 3.0 :: XML And Special Characters?

Sep 18, 2009

I've got an XML-RPC server-client setup with Flash as the front-end and Delphi as the back-end. I'm essentially sending Strings which contain XML to Flash from Delphi. It's working without any real issues but one: Sometimes the Delphi side needs to send a ">" or "<" character in a string (e.g. "dn < ds").

This causes a problem when I try to convert the string to XML because Flash interprets that as malformed (the ">" or "<" could signify a tag). Will I have to comb the string for any occurrences and then escape them (as in "%gt;" for ">" and "%lt;" for "<") myself, or is there possibly some built-in method of dealing with those?

IDE :: Can't Embed Special Font

I've done all kinds of embedding, including the new font symbol embedding method but nothing works. I test if embedding was done by removing the font from my fonts folder. But when I do this, the captions become Arial I even tried to put a plain dynamic text field on stage using the special font, but the same thing happens when I remove the special font from the fonts folder. What can I do to make sure that even users without this font will be able to view the caption in the special font??

Special Characters In Dynamic Text?

i'm loading a dynamic text, but some spanish characters like " and " (i hope you see the characters in "") do not appear. Por example, the word "drsticas" which has the special character over the "a" appears "dricas", that is, it skips the letter with the special character and the 2 following letters.Anyway, i've tried using the embed option for dynamic texts, but may be i'm using it wrong.
