ActionScript 3.0 :: Looking For Special Character And Replace With MC?
Oct 1, 2010
I am making a drag and drop type of quiz. The text is loaded from an XML file. I am looking for a way to "detect" a blank in the text which represents the point in the sentence where a word needs to be filled in. And then that point needs to be represented by a movieclip or sprite or something that will hold text from the word that is dropped onto it (it will need to be draggable in case the user changes thier mind).

I've written an application that deals with multiple languages, English, French, etc, I'm using Zendamf to retrieve multi-language data from a database, however, I'm running into a problem using Zendamf, and it could kill this project fast:
There seems to be an issue passing special character values via Zendamf. While querying a database that returns data including French-text characters (ie: Québec), the result returned from Zendamf is not handling the special characters (ie: instead of Québec, we receive Quc).
I've checked the output of the data via Php: the issue is not with the database result - the characters are returned correctly from the database to the Php result-set - I am able to print these characters correctly before they are sent through Zendamf, either by rendering them in HTML or by writing them to a log file.
However, once I plug the SQL result into an object and pass it to Zendamf, the special characters get mangled. Using Charles Web Debugging Proxy, I can see that the result values are mangled before they are passed back to my AS3 application.

My dynamic textfield doesen't show special characters (%&+...). I have emped the font(uppercase, lowercase, numerals, PUNCTUATION and basic latin) and I've also tried to render it as html.for example:flash.addVariable("newtext"," Word & word2");AC2myTextfield.text = _root.newtext;then it prints just "word", because flash doesen't understand character & as a text format;locally it worked finemyTextfield.text = "Word & word2;";

i've encountered this several times and wondering if there's a solution beyond actually changing the database field values...The problem is that i have string values being pushed to flash (via xml) with html character codes in them like:
"natronp&apos:s funland"
when ideally, i would get:
"natronp's funland"
Anyway to replace these in flash that i've missed? Otherwise it seems i would need a pretty heavy-duty find/replace actionscript script/class to make this happen!

I would like to replace the ":" for text_field_1 Instead, @ should show up when somebody hits :
Any ideas how to do that in as2?
Maybe something like: if text_field_1 is focused && somebody hits : add an @*to the existing text in field 1.
Or make a loop looks for : in text_field_1 and when it finds one it replaces it with @
But i have no idea how to do that in as2

I have a string of 0:'000000' named stringtest I need to replace the 0 at the position x with 1. My code in flixel(a free library to create games)
Code: Select allif (FlxG.keys.justPressed("X"))
{
stringtest=stringtest.replace(stringtest.substring(1,2), '1');
}
it doesn;t replace the second 0 with 1., but it replaces the first one. However if the initial sting is 'let's go' if I press x the letter e is replaced with 1. if the string is 'eet's go' if i press x the first e is replaced with 1 and if i press x again the second letter e is replaced.

I need a AS3 regular expression that allows me to find/replace in strings like these:

I want to be able to replace the spaces at the beginning (inside the > <) for other character. It shouldn't affect the number of character at the right of the spaces or the attributes in the value1 definition.

i'm trying to display this character "<" from an external txt file. Some how it doesnt work. I know that for some characters you have to change the code, examples if you want to display "+" you have to change it to %2b. I read in adobe.com that for "<" you have to change it %3c, and yet it doesnt work.

I'm having some real trouble getting .replace to actually replace something. Here's my code...
[Code]...
I can trace both newFiles[i] and keywords[i][whatever], but the replace doesn't replace anything. The regex is valid as well. I'm using regexr to test it, and it works perfectly there... but will not for me and I don't know why.

I've got a strange situation where I'm replacing the text in a string that I've taken from an XML, but the .replace function for the string keeps failing. I've tried running the example given on the Adobe site, so I know the value I'm trying to replace ("%20") isn't at fault - it's something about the string I have! I've included the code below, but it seems correct. Is there a particular tip I should know when taking XML values into AS3? I'm putting them in strings for this project.

I am working on a Flex app that has a MySQL database. Data is retrieved from the DB using PHP then I am using AMFPHP to pass the data on to FlexThe problem that I am having is that the data is being copied from Word documents which sometimes result in some of the more unusual characters are not displaying properly. For example, Word uses different characters for starting and ending double quotes instead of just " (the standard double quotes). Another example is the long dash instead of -.All of these characters result in one or more accented capital A characters appearing instead. Not only that, each time the document is saved, the characters are replaced again resulting in an ever-increasing number of these accented A's appearing.
Doing a search and replace for each troublesome character to swap it for one of the none characters seems to work but obviously this requires compiling a list of all the characters that may appear and means there is scope for this continuing as new characters are used for the first time. It also seems like a bit of a brute force way of getting round the problem rather than a proper solution.Does anyone know what causes this and have any good workarounds / fixes? I have had similar problems when using utf-8 characters in html documents that aren't set to use utf-8. Is this the same thing and if so, how do I get flex to use utf-8?

I've got an XML-RPC server-client setup with Flash as the front-end and Delphi as the back-end. I'm essentially sending Strings which contain XML to Flash from Delphi. It's working without any real issues but one: Sometimes the Delphi side needs to send a ">" or "<" character in a string (e.g. "dn < ds").
This causes a problem when I try to convert the string to XML because Flash interprets that as malformed (the ">" or "<" could signify a tag). Will I have to comb the string for any occurrences and then escape them (as in "%gt;" for ">" and "%lt;" for "<") myself, or is there possibly some built-in method of dealing with those?

I've been looking on several fourms but have yet to find the answer to how to fix special characters. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place but if someone could point me there. I looked at the fourm on kirupa but it didn't solve my problem. Right know my dynamic text has & a p o s; in it. My xml file is encoding="UTF-8" and I used System.useCodepage = true; but still no luck. I also embedding my font.

I wanted to use a special font (frenchscript mt) for captions I made in the dynamic text field. (My captions change depending on the image chosen and it has links too). I've done all kinds of embedding, including the new font symbol embedding method but nothing works. I test if embedding was done by removing the font from my fonts folder. But when I do this, the captions become Arial I even tried to put a plain dynamic text field on stage using the special font, but the same thing happens when I remove the special font from the fonts folder. What can I do to make sure that even users without this font will be able to view the caption in the special font??

But the mask doesn't work when I convert the static text to dynamic text.
