A have a big chunk of dynamic text (from a db). From this text i am making a .pdf. So i would like to limit the amount of outputted text as a page can run out of space.
I have tried to do it with search and replace. But the problem is that it counts only characters instead of characters in combination with whitespace and the number of lines.
There is space for 100 characters/spaces on each line, and a total of 38 lines on one page.
So i am thinking of something like this: * count all new lines represented by
* count all characters/whitespaces dived to the number of lines to check if this fits the number of (as it uses wordwap)
Anyone with bright ideas on how to approach this?
(btw. TextField.maxChars will not work as it's dynamic text...)
I have:
Input text box
Dynamic text box
What's the code and where do i put it, so when entering a value to the input text, the dynamic will show the amount multiplied by 20?
Problem: I am trying to get a very simple text resize going, for my main content area in a flash website. My aim is to get a button, that on click, increases the text size of a dynamic text field.

This is what I tried, I am very new to Action Script, so excuse the futility of my code.
i have a problem with the line space flash creates when a dynamic text is loaded in a dynamic text field on the stage i put a dynamic textFild with istance name "profile_text". then im loadin in it a text. my text is written in the Notepad like this

i already set a Textformat to my dynamic text with i tryied to play with the "Leading".. but i think it something dealing with paragraph. how i can decrease spacing between paragraphs??
All I want to do is add text from my string to dynamic text field when I click dynamic buttons. What should the as code be for this? Here is my code. Right now I just have the click returning another shape.

If you take a look at my flash movie you will see that I have draggable movie clips, which contain dynamic text fields. These text fields contain text drawn in from a simple xml document. The problem I have is that the text in the text fields is hedged right next to the border of the autosized text box. This makes them look untidy and in the worst case difficult to read. I wonder how I can add some margin to the left and right of the text to fill in some space.The code which formats the text boxes is:
with (main["dragAct"+i].dragActText) {
text = actText[i+1];
background = true;

I have 4 dynamic text boxes which duplicates the text from a main input text box. How do I write a code to make visible only the dynamic text box I want when clicked it's check box.What is the CODE to make each "DYNAMIC TEXTBOX" visible when clicked on it's checkbox?
View 6 RepliesI have this banner that needs to have a several rows worth of paragraph text animate horizontally through it. Ideally, the text should also be possible to update from outside of flash. As for the scrolling text, working with that much text as one long row of letters doesn't seem feasible, so I'm wondering is there a standard way in Flash CS5 of working with large amounts of animated text? Not the user editable kind like text fields and such, but presentational text.
Obviously it's not efficient to have one long string of text that extends several screens beyond the display, as is the case now. Editing just one letter can take several seconds of scrolling as the string is currently over 3000 px wide, and it's not even all the text that's going to be in the final animation. It'd be great if it was possible to type that text through some web based cms, and have it automatically transferred to the Flash banner,
how to display a large amount of text inside of Flash CS4. I have a 46 page pdf I would like to display but I would really like to keep it internal to Flash...I don't want to link it out to a separate html page if I don't have to (i.e. through a URLRequest). I would like to have one self-contained swf file.
View 3 RepliesI was wondering, how do I display text for like 2 seconds or something, then make it disappear?Another question is, how do I set a timer that prevents a function from running within a time limit (2 seconds again) after it ran? Like if a function is triggered by a Key_DOWN, what would a code be to prevent it from running again until that 2 seconds is up? This question is for a 'reload' in a shooter. Is there any other way to approach this?
View 14 RepliesSo I have extended my textfield so I can add a some text, a style, an x and y position.
var clientText:MyTextField = new MyTextField("Client:", "style1", 75, 60);
addChild(clientText);
The problem is the text is starting to get a bit long and I need a way to insert large amount of text neatly. I don't really want to use xml I would prefer to just have it in the ide like in the attached image. However formatting it in this way gives me the error
Is it possible to add text in and existing dynamic text box which already has text in it. Not at the end but in between some predefined characters or word.
View 2 RepliesDoes anyone know why text put into a dynamic text box would look different than the same text with the same font, size, etc in a static text box. The dynamic text looks jagged and pixel-y, while static box looks normal.
View 7 RepliesI am a VERY basic user with Flash and have been asked to make an auto-scrolling news ticker for our website. The ticker needs to be able to pick up text from an external text file (so that we only need to alter the text file rather than the .fla file). AND, if possible, it needs to update automatically each day... I'll explain in more detail as I imagine this is very hazy so far. The news ticker will display up-coming events for the following two weeks on our website. So on, say, Monday the 1st it will show something like:

The situation is this: Im trying to make a pre-loader that displays the load amount in text as a % and has a loading bar that will only load when the movie loads. When the movie is fully loaded the loading bar fill be full and it will display 100%, when the movie is half full it will be 50% and the bar will only be half way across. If I wanted to make the loading bar a specific width how would I do it?? At the moment the bar only seams to want to be 100 wide. The script im using so far is:

I'm trying to pass text from an input text in frame 1 to a dynamic text field in frame 10. Thus when the user enters text and clicks the submit button it takes them to frame 10 and shows them what they typed. It's not working but I'm not getting any errors. Here's the link:

Currently I'm using javascript which works fine to pass text from textfield A to textfield B:
Code:
window.onload=function()
{
document.forms.form1.shirtText.value=document.forms.form1.KitGroupID_16_TextOption_38.value
}
Is there a way to pass the textfield A text to a dynamic text input (flash) as I'd like to use the font embedding flash offers. I can make it work when loading a value from a txt file but I'm not sure how to access the value identified above as KitGroupID_16_TextOption_38 and make it appear in a dynamic input box. Eventually I might want to have 3 font choices for the user but I'd like to just see if I can get this working properly first.
CS5 AS3 - TLFTextField are in use and a requirement. I have text fields that are dynamically changed by XML for different languages. I control the fonts (Embedded, but can vary by project builds). Characters are not mono-spaced.
I need to detect if the inserted text exceeds the fixed text's area. I only want to want fully displayed characters.
I do not want to use the 'length' method that just counts the characters in the text string.
I am building in some self test for all the fields used in a 30 language users CD with captioned movies and GUI screens.
I want to be able to display a paragraph where if the text being shown is (say) over 15 lines long, then a link text will appear and if click it will expand.
Example:
This is a long line for here so I need to make more display but I cant so what will (More)... <== this more link will be clicked and the rest will show up below this paragraph expanded to show the rest of it. (Close)... <== this close link will be clicked and the rest of the page will be hidden again.
Can this be done in Flex? Here is a link example done in javascript [URL].
I thought this would be easy but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I've got a button with a text field in it, simple old dynamic one, not an input. I need to be able to change the htmlText value of that text field and detect it so I can change the size of the button to fit. I thought using Event.CHANGE would do it but I'm not getting the callback:
Code:
private function setListeners():void{
this.btn_text.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE, textChange);

I've got a few input text fields and a submit button on an order form I've designed. Trouble is you can only order in multiples of 2. Naturally I have a warning stating that orders must be multiples of that number but there is always room for idiocy! Lets say my order input text box is called "order" and the button used to proceed to payment is called "submit". How do I detect an ODD number entry and have it run an mc called "warning"?
View 4 RepliesI'm creating a simple quiz which has 3 questions. Each question has an input text field next to it for the user to type their answer. There is also one submit button underneath the 3 questions.
What I'm needing is some actionscript so they can only progress to the next frame by clicking the submit button once ALL 3 text fields have text in it. It doesn't have to detect any specific text, just that there is something put into each one. If there hasn't been, then it'll pop up with text asking them to complete all the questions first.

(Flex 3) I have a TextArea component which needs to hold the user's clipboard content. The TextArea does the job relatively well for most cases but when pasting a large amount of data, I can't seem to get the content in the component at all due to the script execution timeout.
I've done a fair deal on investigation to try and hopefully find how I could make this work. I found that the TextArea is using a IUITextField (which is in my case an instance of TextField at runtime) do handle the job of obtaining the pasting data and then throws an event when it is done.
I have found no way to take a look at the source of TextField as it is a class in the playerglobal.swc library.
Is there a way for me to maybe see the source of that class or is there something I'm missing in my approach to figure out a way to make this work?
As far as I know theres in no way to cahnge the alpha of a dynamic text box. I put one in a movie clip and when i try to change the alpha of it everything else in it changes its alpha but the not the DT box. Could someone plz verify for me that u can't change alpha and help me find a component that allows alpha control with a dynamic text box. thx in advance.

I'm working on a delivery costing system for my company using postcode input from users
For you non Brits out there UK postcodes work on two blocks of 2-4 characters each.
L2 2HH - Liverpool central
M24 2TN - suburb of Manchester
IV56 7NQ - outter Inverness
You get the idea. So the first part of a UK postcode, wether it be 2 characters or 4 characters MUST have atleast one numeric and one non-numeric character in it. How do I detect this?
At the moment I've just got my CHECK POSTCODE button to run a few functions only if my POSTCODE (input text) field length it greater or equal to 2 characters. So how do I easily detect an input of numeric and non-numerical characters without having to resort to indexOf ...a...b...c...1...2...3...?
I've seen similar threads but couldn't find one with the exact same issue. I've a PDF / Word document with arabic copy when I try pasting that text in flash all the joined letters start appearing as individual letters.I've tried the dynamic text box solution in which you create a dynamic text box and assign the text to its variable that doesn't work. But strangely when you write arabic in dynamic text box (with out assigning the text to the variable) and double click to select the text box and its content the text starts appearing fine .. but when published its again all individual letter.
