Nov 27, 2010Looking for a programming book that is in tutorial approach. Example this chapter teaches you how to do a login form. In the second chapter it teaches you how to integrate the login for to another app.Basically I'm looking for a book that teaches you real working application rather than abstract ideas. Programming language I have in mind is Adobe Air/Flex, Visual Basic. Functions I have in mind should at least cover Drag and Drops, Integration to a web form (form entry) and customizable interfaces.The languages i had in mind isn't fix. If you know a programming platform that has little code or easy to learn but still be able to develop a cool application.

Sep 26, 2011I'm attempting to connect to an existing Comet-style long-poll service using an AIR app. The service expects a client to make a GET request with a Connection: Keep-Alive header. This request will remain open for long periods of time so that the server can push data through. In my app, the connection is terminated with an IOError after 30 seconds.
Is this an undocumented limitation of URLStream? A restriction on adl (I've only been running my app through adl)?
The server does not send any "keep-alive" messages to the client but, unfortunately this is not something i have control over.
Update
To test this, I've set up a stripped-down version using a little php script (linked by leggetter below) and am hitting it from a simple AIR app. I'm finding that my connections are closed after 30 seconds whether I use URLStream or URLLoader. the PHP:

If i adjust the initial sleep time in the php script to anything over 30 seconds, the IOError event is triggered. If I lower the sleep time, but the request continues adding data past 30 seconds, the onComplete event is called, but _urlLoader.data is empty.
The only way this process completely successfully is if the entire thing is over before 30 seconds elapses.

Jun 26, 2009I have a flex application that repeatedly polls a remote XML file to detect changes, but I've found that once the file hits a certain size, the poll blocks the UI and makes the page unresponsive for a short time.
Is there any way to ensure that the call made to the server or the event from the flash.utils.Timer class runs asynchronously to the main UI thread?

Nov 7, 2011I'd like to tell if a certain key is being held down around the startup of my AIR (desktop) application, and I'd like to tell if a specific key (ALT in this case) is being held down. Unfortunately, flex seems to be so event based that there is no way poll the keyboard directly. Can anyone verify this?
I know that it's possible to take the keyboard events and keep track manually. However, this won't work if the user presses the key right before startup, so it isn't a solution for my specific problem.

Feb 2, 2012Point me to a robust and well documented Date library for AS3. Specifically, I'd like one that works (at least in principal) like the Java date formatter, so that you can pass in a string of a specific type and get back a date object that can then be easily translated to an alternate timezone, etc. Working with the native Date object is an incredible PITA for when one needs to do things like this... I'm hoping I won't have to re-invent this wheel from scratch.

Feb 17, 2010Pretty straightforward. Open source is good, but organization and documentation is better. Actionscript 3 is a must, I don't really want to start working with the older versions. I guess that's the crux of my problem using Google, because there are vast quantities of how to do thing "the old way" out there, but I'm having trouble getting solid AS3/Flash9+ stuff.

Oct 31, 2010I have a flash app which will send/receive a constant stream of data. The flash app should open a connection to the Java server, keep it open, and attempt to reconnect on socket failure. Are there any good APIs that offer this functionality? Smartfox Server is one option, but if I had my way I'd embed an API in my app rather than contort my app to run under Smartfox. Ideally it would offer an API on the flash end, another on the Java end, and efficiently (java nio preferably) handle the network component in between. I would just define handlers on both the client & server.

Adobe :: Flash FLA File Size Becoming Huge For No Good Reason
Mar 31, 2012What is the reason for the enormass bloating of FLA file size, when many edits and saves are made to a FLA file, yet assets are not being added to the library? What is the best technique to keep FLA files smaller in size? (with the problem described below. I am not talking about published SWF files or asset management)Over many edits and many saves of my FLA files, they become 30 times the size on disk from where they start out. Example 750k can get as high as 34mb. In the past "save and compact" used to fill the role of reducing FLA file sizes but now that feature is gone.When I save as a CS4 file then back to CS5 the file becomes much smaller after it has become bloated, BUT I take a risk every time I do this that the file will become corrupted (I've had corruptions happen).I have read that files which were created in CS5 and are never in the format of CS4 don't have this problem, but I find that theory unlikely since I have tried to follow this rule to no success.
I have also read that every FLA file tracks its "history" of assets. So adding and removing assets to the library will sometimes cause bloating because old assets that are removed from the library remain in the FLA file. This seems bogus because there is no purpose to this, but could be an indication of a bug in Adobe Flash Professional CS5, and CS5.5.Personal details: the files I am editing contain personally created flash components, images, audio, many symbols (20+) but no embedded video.For me personally, this bloating is a problem because I'm dealing with hundreds of flash FLA files that should be about 1-4mb in size but are instead much larger. The overall effect is that I end up with gigabytes of files instead of hundreds of mbs.

Actionscript 3 - Flash Based Website Basics - First Steps - Good Practices
Jul 20, 2010I have a bit of Flash experience, did a full featured movie player, other stuff in AS3 and got plenty of programming skills in other languages, BUT now I need to create a multi paged website. Quite easy, a few pages, some animations here and there, nothing fancy, got all the graphics.
But time is short on this one, so I need some advice about good practices (pack everything into one main MC or make separate swfs and load them in, etc.), where to begin, or what kind of book should I grab to make the job pretty.
ActionScript 3.0 :: Slideshow With Links - Incorrect Links After 1 Replay?
Aug 17, 2011i created a flash slideshow with pictures of events and link each picture with its own event (ie. each pictures has its own links to the website). I created the fade in and fade out effect using the class motion tween. With the link, I created a layer with a button that has alpha= 0 (so the user don't see it) and then I used code snippet to make another layer with the action script "click to go to url."
When the slideshow goes to the last picture I made it fade out and the first picture of the slideshow would show up and then the slideshow would replay itself (by default?). My goal is to make a continuous slideshow.
When I tested the swf file, the first time it runs, everything is right. The urls and the pictures are in correct order. However when the slideshow replays itself automatically, I notice that the links are incorrect. In the first play, when I click the picture of the event it would open the url of that event.However when the sldieshow replays, clicking the pictures would only open the url of the first event picture. When I click on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.pictures the browser opens only the link of the first picture of the slideshow.
