Dec 7, 2011im very basic with flash and i made a movie that contains about 110 frames with help of toturials and stuff from internet and from here too for my site. what happens is that the movie has about 3 mb and for some slow connections it just doesnt displays the correct info when i click the buttons right away...so now i would like to built a loading message so that ppl can only access the movie when it is completely loaded in order to dont receive incomplete info when clicking the buttons ....but i dun know how.

Aug 17, 2010I'm developing a game which will feature a 'light' instant messaging system; 'light' in the sense that I want all logged-in players to receive a "new message!" notification if another player sends him/her a message. It doesn't have to be 'instant' like with a chat service, so I'm thinking about having the game check for 'new messages' every 20 seconds.Now, I'd prefer to use what I already know, which is using AS3 to call PHP pages, querying a database and receive a response in the form of XML which can be used in AS3.
So, my question is this: How feasible / stupid would it be to such a 'light' IM feature using this method: I call "checkForWaitingMessages.php" from my Flash game every 20th second, passing along the player's login id. The PHP page checks if there are any 'waiting messages' in my database under that player id, then returns all 'waiting messages' in XML form, which I use Actionscript to display to the player. This happens every 20 seconds.My main concerns are: - How much of a strain does it put on a nomal hosting service that I request an XML document every 20th second? - What if there are 100 players logged in, making it 100 requests every 20th second? What about a 1000? Is this all in the realm of trivialities, or will this become to cumbersome to realistically implement?

Feb 18, 2011I need to implement some sort of data locking in a Flex application I'm developing. A user clicks a specific button to "check out" the data set, and other users must wait until they are finished before they can make edits. After a period of inactivity, the application will release the lock to someone else.What I'm after is an easy way to determine if the user is still interacting with the application so they don't have to manually keep clicking "yes I want to continue editing". For example, I could handle all mouse clicks for the entire application and add 5 minutes to the timeout every time they click something. Are there any better options for doing something like this? Is there something built in to check for last interaction time?

May 20, 2011I need your opinion on best way of skinning components do you prefer raster or prosperity based styling like CSS? or maybe you like the Flash way of styling with IDE? Raster vs. Vector which many have mentioned, there is much of a complexity when applying custom skins to components.I know that the flash at its origin where designed to draw vector graphics, by i'm personaly not a huge fan of vector.Many bigger widget/application kits are based on using multiple bitmaps to draw their custom style onto regular components.Maybe this is the way to go? when building a custom framework i in a dead zone where i don't know which way to go, if should go with property styling or bitmap skinning. Bitmaps sounds more fun and more complex styles can be made with bitmaps including noise..Generally i want your opinion for implement the structure that to most developers/designer are comfortable with

Feb 4, 2011I have an AIR app that gets bundled with XML files that the app needs. These get put into the APP Storage Directory, of course. Works great. But when I install a new version ( which includes new XML files) , the new files don't get added or overwrite the ones from the previous version. It seems that if that directory is there from a previous install, the installer will ignore the part where it moves included files.

Aug 6, 2003I need to make my Flash application create a connection to a remote application and have the remote application send periodic updates to my Flash animation. The remote app is written in VB 6, and does not support XML sockets. However, I don't need the ability to send or receive XML since I am going to be overriding the onLoad() event anyway.
Or maybe I do need that ability... I'm having trouble getting my onLoad() event to trigger. Right now I'm just testing the onLoad event like this:

So, basically I'm trying to find out how I can format the data I'm sending it so that the onLoad() event triggers. I've read that the XMLSocket object listens for the Null byte, so perhaps the data I'm sending it doesn't terminate properly. I need a persistent connection from Flash to the VB app because the VB app will be the one initiating the updates to the Flash application. Is the XMLSocket the way to go here, or is there another class of objects that I'm missing?
