I'm getting this weird glitch where the added_to_stage event seems to be dispatched twice when I construct my object.Now I know that my constructor is not being called twice cause I traced a string before the event listener, and it only traces once but I traced the same string within the listener handling function body and it traced twice.

Here's the code:

ActionScript 3.0 :: How Does Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE Work

May 5, 2010

I'm attempting to initiate a set of variables within a movie clip myElement as soon as it's dynamically loaded onto the stage:

frame1 within myElement:

PHP Code:

this.addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE,  initiateVars); function initiateVars(ev:Event):void{         var currentY:int = this.y;     var currentX:int = this.x; }

I'm trying to make this happen only once, and only when myElement is first placed on stage, but the code above doesn't work. Am I misusing the ADDED_TO_STAGE event?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Use ADDED_TO_STAGE Event To Load An External Xml Driven Swf Menu?

Feb 7, 2010

well i have a problem to which there are lots of related searches over the net but none could solve it. well the problem is that i have an XML driven carousel menu that needs to be loaded using the preloader. After the load is complete i can find my swf menu's backgound and the static buttons getting loaded but the buttons that should load in the carousel using xml are not present.

I have come across the even ADDED_TO_STAGE to load the swf once it has completed its dynamic loading. But they have used it in the documentation class for thier project. I am not using any separate actionscript file.All my code is written in the 1st frame of my project .... I really need a solution to this problem

Actionscript 3 :: Ignore A Flash Component's ADDED_TO_STAGE Event During Authoring Time?

Feb 3, 2010

I've built a UIComponent in AS3. When I drag it onto the stage during authoring time, the ADDED_TO_STAGE event fires.

I have an event handler, but it's really only meant to perform actions at runtime, not when I'm dropping the component onto the stage to design the layout. Is there any way to check to see if the component is "running" in a live SWF?

Basically, I don't want the ADDED_TO_STAGE event handler to do anything at design time.

ActionScript 3.0 :: ADDED_TO_STAGE On Frame 1 Of MovieClip Symbol?

Jun 8, 2011

I made the following discovery while attempting to use the ADDED_TO_STAGE event with timeline code. I don't know whether to say it's a real problem, or maybe it's just an observation, but it's very simple to demonstrate. Just make a MovieClip symbol in the library, and set it for export. On frame 1 of this MovieClip symbol, enter this code:

ActionScript Code:
import flash.events.Event;
addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, added);[code]....

(Note: I called my MovieClip symbol Screen1, and gave it a class name of Screen1 when I set it for export. But I am letting Flash create the class for me, there is no same-named class in the classpath)Next, put this code on frame 1 of the main timeline:

ActionScript Code:
var screen1:Screen1 = new Screen1();
addChild(screen1);

Looking at that latter code, apparently when the screen1 instance is created in line 1, the object hasn't fully finished instantiating before line 2 is executed,because the trace message never happens.Prior to this, I had assumed that code on frame 1 of a MovieClip, if it were "base level" and not inside any functions, was roughly equivalent to the constructor of a class. Apparently that isn't so, because whenever I add an event listener for ADDED_TO_STAGE in the constructor of a class, it always works, even if the object is immediately added to the display list, exactly as above.

In some of my other testing, if the movie clip instance is later removed from the stage and added again, the added and removed handlers fire just fine. It's only this initial time that it gets skipped. Also, if you add an event listener for ADDED_TO_STAGE from the main timeline instead, like this:

ActionScript Code:
screen1.addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, added);

It works just fine.The conclusion I draw from all this is that there is no way to use the ADDED_TO_STAGE handler inside a MovieClip's frame code and have it fire the first time. Also that there may be no real equivalent to a constructor when you let Flash create the class for you. Thoughts, anyone? I am attaching a FLA file (CS4 format) in case anyone might want to examine this without putting a file together yourself. Don't expect anything at all fancy, though, it's nothing more than what I described above, and I fully expect you'll want to delete it later.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Cast Error When Redispatching Event?

Aug 24, 2009

Can someone explain me why when I listen for a custom event and then redispath it it is redispatched as an Event instead of an object of custom event type ?

Exemple : You make un custom event, name it CustomEvent.

In a first class you dispatch an instance of this event and it is managed by a method in a second class, let's say this one :

[Code]...

I missed probably something in event dispatching process but I don't know what. However I found a solution : In the first event manager, dispatch a copy of the custom event received instead of dispatching the object itself. It works in this case.

Actionscript 3 :: Error Reporting From Event Callback?

Aug 17, 2011

I have been experimenting with supplying better debugging information when an error happens in asynchronous code in AS3.

As an example of the poor error reporting be default, take the case where I force a null pointer in a Timer callback (github gist), I get the following stacktrace back on the console:

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Function/<anonymous>()[/[path-to-source-file]/TestClass.as:14]
at flash.utils::Timer/_timerDispatch()
at flash.utils::Timer/tick()

This tells me very little about how the timer callback actually links to my code.

The question is: How can I get information about what code created the callback?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Handling URL Loader Error Event

Dec 6, 2006

There is a file (php script) stored remotely on the server and I want to read it into flash using AS3.0's URLLoader. However, if I unplug my cable just before reading the file, and attempt to read the file, I want to capture an Error event in some error handler, which would mean "internet connection is down, file can not be accessed". I am reading the AS3.0 documentation now for 2 hours already (mainly: "Handling asynchronous errors in an application" and "Events of URLLoader class"), but I didn't stumble across an example of how to catch an Error event of the URLLoader object when reading a remote file from the server. However I took all possible events I could find (even those which are not necessary at all), and tested them in the following code:

Code:
public function URLLoaderTest( ) {
_loader = new URLLoader( ); // _loader is private var of this class
configureListeners(_loader);
var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("url_with_php_script");
_loader.load(request);
[Code] .....

This code traces tons of data, when executed with internet connection up:
Code:
openHandler: [Event type="open" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2]
progressHandler loaded:10 total: 30
httpStatusHandler: [HTTPStatusEvent type="httpStatus" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 status=0]
completeHandler data: 1165428133
but it traces NOTHING (?!),

If the connection is down (whether closed by firewall, or cable-unplugged). So that basically means, none of the above events is fired, none of them takes care of the errorHandling in case of no-internet-connection (or if for some reason we can't reach the server atm). Any ErrorEvent i can use to catch such (connection down) Error Event? Or do I have to use Timer class instead to check wether the server responded in some time or not? I would like to leave this as the last option.
