ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Graphic Symbols Through Nested MC's?

Nov 2, 2009

Let's say I have Class Holder linked to a MovieClip holder_mc. holder_mc has a child held_mc that has a Graphic Symbol pic_gr. pic_gr has multiple frames.

From the Class file of Holder, how would I change the frame of pic_gr? I also didn't see a way to name the instance of pic_gr, is that right?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash CS5 IDE - Symbols And Nested Symbols And The Difference Between Graphics And Movie Clips And Scoping

Oct 26, 2010

I'm working through a book called Foundation Game Design with Flash, and I'm finding the Flash IDE confusing. I've been programming for several years, so working with AS3 directly is far easier than trying to understand symbols and nested symbols and the difference between graphics and movie clips and scoping issues and all that -- when tied into the IDE.

How many of you who are making games in AS3 also use the Flash IDE? Can anyone recommend a resource that is AS3 heavy and Flash IDE light? I don't care how much time I may or may not save by using things like the timeline, I just want to understand what I'm using.

Professional :: Blur Filter On Graphic Symbols?

Jul 8, 2011

I'm trying to export my flash animation to quicktime, but because for some odd reason the normal .mov exporter on flash corrupts the images, I'm exporting to .swf, importing to premiere pro, then exporting again to .mov.  The problem is that .swf import on premiere pro only captures the first layer of the timeline, so I have to use graphic symbols in order to get all the animations out on the first layer.  Now I'm trying to do blur on some of the symbols, but graphic symbols can't have filters, and movie clips won't show up on premiere pro.

Use Movie Clip Or Graphic Symbols For Character Animation?

Mar 12, 2008

Should I use Movie Clip or Graphic Symbols for Character Animation? What do people who make TV shows use. If I'm not planning on manipulating any symbols with ActionScript and I'm not using a symbol that requires it's own time line like a walk cycle, is there any reason to use movie clips symbols? If I put my animation on the web will it download noticeably faster if I use graphic symbols instead of movie clip symbols?

Professional :: How To Animate Resizing And Moving Of Graphic Symbols

May 29, 2010

As the title says, how do you animate the resizing and moving of graphic symbols without making the other objects go invisible? I'm using Flash CS4. Here are the bizarre, unexplainable problems I've had before. First of all, here's my basic scene. It's 6 rectangles and 8 half-circles. [URL]. First thing I tried doing was applying a Classic Tween (since Motion Tween did nothing and Shape Tween was disabled). However, what that did was turn every object in the entire work space into one giant object for no reason at all, which certainly isn't what I wanted. [URL]. What I realized is that in order to avoid having all of the objects merged into one, I had to create a brand new file first. [URL].

Next, I added in a blank keyframe and a Classic Tween while the workspace is still empty. [URL]. Then finally copy/paste the objects into the first frame from the first file: [URL]. Now I paste those shapes again into the target frame and resize one of the diagonal shapes: [URL]. Then I moved that rectangle to a new position: [URL]. However, when I preview the animation, only the animating object shows up... everything else is invisible. [URL]. Also, if I try moving a different object, the rectangle will start spinning for no reason. [URL]. How can I animate this object without making everything else go invisible and keep the object from spinning out of control?

Flash - Nested Animated Symbols With Child Longer Than Parent?

Jan 12, 2012

I'm looking to create an animation loop in Flash. The base character animation I have is 27 frames. However to have the background move at the correct speed, the entire animation is 432 frames.

Since I am making the animation so long anyway, I want the character to blink halfway through the animation loop. I went into the head symbol and extended its animation from a single frame to 432 frames. Halfway through that animation I swap out the image for one that is blinking (3 new images added for the blink).

So, now the symbols are nested like: 432 frames -> 27 frames -> 432 frames

But it doesn't seem like Flash is smart enough to animate it as I would expect. It only repeats the first 27 frames of the child symbol.

The next thing I tried was extending the 27 frame character animation out to 432 frames. I did this by copy-pasting the character animation 16 times. But this also does not work because copying the keyframes also copies the position of the child animation's playback. This causes the animation to constantly reset and never reach the blink.

I also tried using the copy motion option, but it didn't seem to do anything different than copying keyframes.Is there an easy way to make this animation work? I can't possibly need to manually position a total of 576 keyframes (there is actually another level to the nesting which does not use any tweens, just keyframes) could I?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Disable "mouseEnabled" From Graphic Symbols?

Sep 24, 2009

I know it`s possible to do the following on Button symbols:

btn1.mouseEnabled = false;

to make it so when the user rolls over the button, the mouse icon doesn`t change to a hand.

But it seems that all the Graphic symbols "mouseEnabled" are by default "true". As when using "Convert to Symbol" -> "Graphic" objects cannot be instanced, the following cannot be used:

graphic1.mouseEnabled = false;

What is the solution to turn all graphics "mouseEnabled" to false?

Actionscript 3 :: Access All Symbols In A *.swf File?

Jan 11, 2012

Is there a way to access all exported symbols in a *.swf file?

I mean all the symbols that are marked Export to Actionscript in the Library of Flash IDE. That way I could use getDefinition() class without having to know the name of the symbol beforehand.

This is for an internal tool made in AS3 that will work along a framework, which needs to perform some operations on every symbol of a *.swf file. So performance isn't required, and a hackish solution (accessing ByteArray of the swf or something like that) is valid.

I ended up using as3swf to parse the ByteCode of the *.swf file and read the class.

Here's a simple function I made that returns an array containing the symbol names, ready to be used with getDefinition(). You must pass in a ByeArray of the *.swf file.

private function getSymbolList(bytes:ByteArray):Array {
var swf:SWF = new SWF(bytes);
var ret:Array = [];

ActionScript 3.0 :: Get A Package Being Able To Access Library Symbols?

Here's the code:

Upon the stage of my flash movie, I have several symbols (movie clips) which I need to address dynamically using a loop. The symbols that I want to address all have instance names beginning with the string "lamp_", they then each have a different number concatenated on the end to distinguish between them (e.g. lamp_1, lamp_2, lamp_3.....).

The following noobish effort I have devised is totally useless, and I am hoping someone can show me how I might get this working[code]...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Nested Array Element

Mar 21, 2011

I've got a nested array containing a series of 2 element arrays containing an object name, and text related to that object.I've set it up like this:public var names:Array = [["instance name 1", "text for first object"],["instance name 2", "text for second object"], ...]];What I'm trying to do is to have the text related to the object appear in a text box when the object is moved.This is all set up within a class containing code for the drag and drop functions.If I set the text box to show a specific element, such as:MovieClip(parent).text_box.text= names[2][1];it works fine. But I can't get it to create the value for the first bracket from the this.name attribute.I had it working for 2 arrays - one with the name and another with the text where the code was;MovieClip(parent).text_box.text= texts[names.indexOf(this.name)];  (arrays named 'names' and 'texts', text box named 'text_box')I'm hoping there's something similar that I can do for the nested array, but everything I try gives me the #1010 error - term undefined.Is there an easy way to sort this out - or am I better sticking with the 2 array version?
