ActionScript 3.0 :: Events - Variables And Input Text
Oct 14, 2010
I'm not new to Flash or AS3 but I've never really made anything too complex. I'm making a Flash game and getting to know Variables for the first time. The tutorials online confuse me because they're mostly geared towards AS2 and I bought this book (which is awesome) Game Design with Flash, but it only covers variables involving numbers and a guessing game.
All I want right now is a field to enter your name and below, whatever the user has entered, will show up in a Dynamic text field that will go, "Oh, so your name is (whatever)?" I understand that the information that the user types into the Input Text Field has to be entered in somehow, so do I need to make a function to make it work with a button? Right now I can type in the Input but nothing shows up in the Dynamic text field. I borrowed an AS3 example from elsewhere on this forum and added my own Instance names. I also wanted to know, how can I call up the user's name throughout the game? Just calling that same variable up?
I'm trying to do something that seems simple, but I've been looking all over for the right information and I can't seem to find it.I've got an input text field and various movieclips. On the click of a button or hitting "enter", i am able to trace what is typed into the input text field.I want certain inputted numbers to trigger movie clip events (gotoAndStop, etc).
Setting variables. Have a look at the file. Current height and width are both set at 200. I dont think i got the scripting right, or it may be in the wrong place.
I have an input textfield where the user can enter a long string of numbers, seperated by spaces. Example of this is "2 4 10 20". I made the textbox and made sure it only numbers and spaces can be entered. However, I am looking all over google for a way to split these numbers and save them in a different var when a space is encountered. I don't really know how to even start doing this.
saving in vars does not have to happen in runtime, but only when a button is pressed.
is there also a way to prevent the user from entering a space right after another space?

I am designing a roulette wheel type game. I am using a variable, "_global.myMoney = 0; " to keep track of the total money the player has. When I built the prototype, I used a dynamic text field on the stage with an instance name of "myMoney_text" and a variable of "_root.myMoney"
Now, I need to move this text box into a movie clip with an instance name of "winnings_mc"
When I test the movie, it looks like it showing the style sheet (font size, font, etc...) inside the dynamic text box. If I change the variable of the box to "_root.winnings_mc.myMoney" it seems to track initially, but now my updateMoney function in my main script does not work. The function is called like this:
im trying to load an swf into another swf that has a variable in the text input field. Im a designer and not a programmer but I am using this tutorial to get started in loading a form with a variables in it.[URL]..
What im doing is trying to duplicate is the text box so that when i want to load new_box.swf (with a variable name "company") into main.swf into a movieclip with an instant name "loader." using this:
on (release) { loadMovie ("new_box.swf", "_root.form.loader");}
I can get the movie to load but it loses the variable "company" in the process and when i send the form it doesnt work. If i just keep it in the main timeline it works but not when i loadMovie.
I've had a site running for a few months that takes fourinput text boxes (name, e-mail, subject and message) and posts thevalues to an ASP page which composes an e-mail with a CDO.Messagecommand. For some reason (nothing has been changed in the files or onthe server), it stopped working and I've traced it down to Flashpassing Input Text Box Formatting information along WITH theariable.Can anyone explain what's happened and how to correct it?For example, in my form I've set all the name, e-mail andmessage to static text and let the Subject variable be passed andin the e-mail subject line, I get this:
Is there any way (besides clicking on all the input text fields and checking) to find all variables in the timeline? I cant seem to get all of my variables loaded into php. I'm 100% sure my php script is correct. Only 3 of my variables are being sent and the others are not. I think the problem is that I have duplicate variable names and can't find the duplicate in my timeline.
I have an issue with font scaling of a dynamic text box.
Currently i have one input box named input_1 with a variable attached to it named "choc_1".
Also, i have a dynamic text box named dynamic_1 with variable "choc_1".
When the user types something on the input box then the dynamic box changes instantly and displays what the user has written.
auto scale-size the fonts to a smaller size if the user types many letters.
The input_1 box has a 13 character limit. My initial font size is 200, i want to scale down so when the user types 10 letters they fit the box and they don't go out of screen. I want to use one line, so wrap or multiline is not possible.
here's a code that i'm trying to fix but i can't get the dynamic box to change:

I'm trying to extend the text input that comes in flex to support an icon, just like mac os x search text input has a grey circle aligned to the right, the text input has a addChild method, but it didn't work for me.
the last of many problems, is that at the very end of the test, you're shown your score, and you have the option to type your name in a text box and click "save". Doing so will apply you score data (time elapsed, date, correct answers and percentage) along with the name you typed in, and output in a form, that you can save or print off, or whatever. The problem is, the input text box will not let you type in it. If you mouse over it, the mouse stays a pointer, you don't get the text tool. If you click on it, the cursor appears for a split second after you release the mouse button, but you cannot type anything in it.This is the actionscript for the output form:
Code: // function saveRecord(record:String, field:String, now:Object, score:Object):Void {
I have 2 keyframes on my timeline.The first keyframe has an input text field (instance name: inputTxt) and a button (instance name: btnTester).When the user clicks the button it takes them to the second keyframe where their text should be displayed in a dynamic text box (instance name: txtBox).I get a null value in keyframe 2.
i created an input text box that puts the users input into a global variable, but when i test it it gives me not only what i have typed in but all the html formatting for the font that my input text box has on it.I only want the text that i have typed in to go into the variable but the wackload of html is going in there too. ive tried a few different things, rewriting my code, recreating the text box, changing settings, dont know what im missing.
I'm trying to build a fahrenheit to celsius convertor in AS3. How can I test to see whether what is input into a text input box (flash component) is not a number? This isn't correct but you can get an idea of what i'm trying to do:
if (celsius_txt.text == NaN || fahrenheit_txt.text == NaN) { //do something; }
i have an one input text box, first i type text into it and press space bar at this it will become empty and ready to accept next input from starting position, i make the text box empty by
textbox.text = "";
but the cursor not set to initial position in text box it consider "" as "space" and cursor will display after one space only, i need that cursor again move to starting position..
Using AS3 to create a basic number guessing game but for some reason the input text field won't accept text input. I can't figure out which piece of code is causing the problem and it's driving me nuts considering it's from a tutorial.
My Flash game targets 24 fps, but slows to 10 on slower machines. This is fine, except Flash decides to throttle the queue of incoming MouseEvent and KeyboardEvents, and they stack up and the Events fall behind. Way behind. It's so bad that, at 10 fps, if I spam the Mouse and Keyboard for a few seconds not much happens, then, after I stop, the game seems to play itself for the next 5 seconds as the Events trickle in. Spooky, I know.
Does anyone know a way around this? I basically need to say to Flash, "I know you think we're falling behind, but throttling the input events won't help. Give them to me as soon as you get them, please."
This code corresponds to a quiz question where the correct answer is either blue or green. I get the #1009 error if I input "blue". The answer "green" seems to work ok. What's wrong with my code? Is there a better way to make is so more than one answer works? Something like "blue" or "green" or "otheranswer", etc..?
I'm working on a project for school which is requiring me to make a game using Flash and ActionScript 3.0. One of the tasks I have to do is load an external XML file that will be displaying questions and answers. I've looked at google to find simple scripts for loading XML, one example being below:
Code: var myXML:XML; var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
I have 10 buttons each linked to a dynamic text box. 5 integer variables will be passed into swf file (one will be a zero.. which ends the game) When a button is clicked, the first variable is displayed in a text box, when the 2nd button is clicked, the next variable is displayed etc.., until 0 is passed from variables. What action script needs to be initiated to declare the incoming variables and what code is needed on each button to make sure the variables are not repeated?
I need to put together an editable text area that has a custom caret (cursor) which is different from the default blinking vertical line. Is the caret a "skinnable" property of text input? note that I am not asking about the mouse pointer cursor which can be set using the CursorManager.
I've got a text input box (txt_BirthDay) that I want to enter a date into in the format dd/mm/yyyy.
I want to split the contents of that input box into 3 separate variables for day, week and month.
This works:
Code: var BirthDay:String = new String(txt_BirthDay.text); var Day:Number = Number(BirthDay.substr(0,2)); var Month:Number = Number(BirthDay.substr(3,2)); var Year:Number = Number(BirthDay.substr(6,4)); But is it the best way of doing it?
Also, How can I 'mask' the input box so it only accespts inputs in the dd/mm/yyyy format?
