ActionScript 3.0 :: Extending Vector By Number Of Pixels

I'm trying to extend a line from any given point to the mouse by a certain number of pixels (say, 100). This is the closest I've got: link to SWF. As you can see, the red line is behaving as it should (connecting the "any" point, located at the center of the screen, with the mouse) but the blue line is extending a line from the origin to the mouse by 100 rather than from the "any" point.

I'm trying to draw a line from a point, in a direction to whichever edge of the window it hits first.
I've really only come up with the most brute force solutions to this problem (getting the vector, finding intersections with the all edges, choosing the shortest) but I can't help but feel that some much more elegant solution is JUST out of my vision.
A followup:
This one is a similar problem in that I know there's got to be a really nice solution hanging out on the web somewhere that I haven't found, yet.
If I have a series of points along multiple edges of the window (up to all four) how can I sequence them to be connected to each other, and any window corners along the way?
In other words, let's say I have a series of points (generated at runtime, so without any order) along 2 edges of the screen and I want to draw the triangle that they make up. How can I connect them in order (so as not to get any of that ugly intersecting polygon nonsense) AND include the corner?
This one I really have very little insight on. The best I've managed is picking a point at the center of the stage and comparing the angles formed when drawing lines to each point. It's ugly, and requires that one find the largest angle between two of those vectors, first (making two passes necessary). It even breaks when the points extend to three sides as the largest angle is not always between the two outside vectors.

I am currently being confused by the Vector class.I wrote a beautiful XML to TypedClass parser. Works beautifully and without fault. UNTIL a co-worker noticed we got a Conversion Error for Vector.<Number> to Vector.<*>.
Every Vector I've ever tested all extend Vector.<*>.
Vector.<Sprite>, Vector.<String>, Vector.<Point>, Vector.<Boolean>, Vector.<TextField>, Vector.<CustomObject>, etc etc etc. ALL of them.

Now I have accounted for these 3 vectors individually as even uint and int does not extend Vector.<Number> as I would have expected.
And my parsing function works for all types correctly again. But my confusion comes as to WHY this is the case, and why I couldn't find any documentation on the subject.

instantiate a Vector.<Number> with two values of 1.0 You might think I would do Vector.<Number>(1.0, 1.0); but that only traces 0 Is what I'm trying to do possible? If so, how? Or am I stapled to the routine of using .push ?

I create a timer and set it to fire events every 500ms:

On every tick I would like to add the last 2 elements of a vector to an other vector:

But after the 2nd tick, it doesn't add only those 2 elements but the whole other vector I really don't get what this is happening. I don't use tempCoords anywhere else in my code. The coords vector is updated in a MOUSE_MOVE event with the coordination point of the mouse.

How would you go about initializing a Vector. with say the values 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Logic would say you could do newVector = new Vector. ( [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] );
You could also try something like this...
var tmp = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5];
newVector = new Vector.();
newVector = newVector.concat(tmp);
But then you get a type error converting Array to Vector.
I'm stumped, am I missing something stupid or does the vector class really not play well with numeric types? You can try making them decimal numbers just to be sure they get cast as number and not int.

I have a swf file that loads into my main movie, and within that swf there is a masked image that i would like to scale using zoom in and out buttons and also by using a slider bar.However i cant find any tutorials that will allow me to combine the two.I have used the following code for the buttons. Which seems to work ok but i would like it to be a little smoother. (using speed or some sort of easing??)

I have a movie clip called column1_mc. when I click a button I need to move the movie clip in incremental moves consisting of 30 pixels.
column1_mc._y = 30;
Does not work because that is giving a _y coordinate.For example.I need to make the movie clip jump to _y 300 but make 10x30 pixel incremental jumps. Moving 10 times 30 pixel jumps.

which surprises me as ConfigurationVO inherits from NodeVO.Is the compiler really not able to figure out that a Vector of a superclass should be able to hold a reference to a Vector of a subclass?

I have a large vector drawing (imagine 5000x5000) that i want to break up into separate pieces. I know that I can convert this vector drawing into a bitmap and then use the copyPixels method to create many separate bitmaps of the different regions of the original vector drawing, but is there any way to subdivide it into movieclips that just contain vector graphics instead of a bitmap?The reason im dividing a big chunk of vector graphics into smaller pieces is for performance reasons, so flash would only render a small part of this big chunk at a time (only certain regions/voxels/subdivisions are rendered at a time). But bitmaps apparently take up a lot of memory and the system im using would take much less memory if these subdivisions could be preserved in their original vector graphics form.
I imagine I could use masks somehow to achieve this effect (for each subdivision, duplicate the huge image and mask only the region that the subdivision represents), but I dont know the performance costs of masking or if this will create other problems.So is there anyway to split up a movieclip of vector graphics into smaller movieclips of vector graphics the same way copyPixels can with bitmaps?

I have an asset management system which loads a bunch of external swfs, and when requested distributes copies of those swfs to other parts of an app (it creates instances of the classes to do this).Anyway, when I use these loaded swfs somewhere and then remove them Flash does its trick of leaving the sounds running (as they are triggered by timers).If they were Loader class items I could use .unloadAndStop() to shut them up and get them garbage collected, but they aren't of course.I thought I might be able to extend the Loader class and set the .content my self - which I have done by overiding the content getter in Loader. I was hoping I could then use unloadAndStop on that class but nothing happens. I've tried casting my fake Loader to a Loader as well and no joy.

Inside my code i have some variables declared as Numbers, and i get some others from an external source; these variables can either be Numbers or String representation of Numbers. Now, i have to implement some equality controls on these variables, and since i don't know in that moment which type are them of, i'm converting all of them to Numbers (i don't need and neither want to compare strings) via the Number() function which accepts either Numbers or Strings as an input. These controls can compare 2 single variables or a variable and a sum (or subtraction) of other variables, for example:

I'm using AS2, and trying to use AS2's packages for the first time, so I can organize my .as files properly. I'm running into some problems though I've got some classes that extend MovieClip, and I've put the class names in the Linkage>Class fields. When I publish, though, I get the error: The class or interface 'ClassName' could not be loaded. anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I tried importing the classes on the main timeline, and even including the directories of those classes on the classpaths list, but no dice

How can this same function be called in various frames throughout the main timeline? For instance, say the above code is on frame one and the "staged_kiss_mc" is extended from frames 1 to 10. On all frames there is also a stop action (along with additional code, content, etc.)How can the function "start_kisses" be activated on each of the 10 frames in the same way it is on frame 1 ?Is it necessary to add a new Event Listener? Do new functions need to be coded for each frame, such as start_kisses1, start_kisses2, etc.? --Or can the same original function be reused?

I found this sentence while googling out for Flash help: "Add 3 frames to your timeline. Drop a TextField on your Stage & make sure it extends over all the 3 frames." I was not able to accompolish the second task of this. I added the frames, dropped a TextField on the first frame, but could not find a way to extend it over all the 3 frames.

I want to add a property to the MovieClip class. I just have a bunch of MovieClips that are placed on the stage by reading an XML file and creating lots of clips according to the information in them. Now, I need to know which MovieClips were created below previous clips, and I figure that the easiest way to do so would be by extending the MovieClip class and add an order property.I have some problems though: I don't know how to set or get this order property within the main clip, I don't know how to place this clip within my movie, and I don't know how to create them dynamically (do I just do something like var myNewObjectOfExtendedClass : myExtendedClassName = new myExtendedClassName?)

When I open a new Flash CS5 project, the timeline grid only goes out to 600 or so frames. I have a three minute audio track that I want to insert at frame 1, and at 24 fps, that means it should end around frame 7200. So what I want to do is to extend the grid out to 7200 frames - before I drag my audio clip in, or once I have it in. If I set keyframes at 1 and 5, say, and drag my audio track in at frame 1, it appears that it will play all the way through using the controller, but my timeline grid is still only 600 frames long, and if the next thing I want to do is something that happens at frame 6000... I still can't get there.

I made the transition to AS3 two years ago, but I still carry with me old AS2 habits. Could someone please help me understand how I extend a custom class correctly. I have the bad habit of putting most of my code in one .as file (the Document class), but I use a few custom classes now and then. when extending a flex component and trying to use it, I get a RTE. I.e. I am extending a DataCanvas and am using it like this:
