ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Wait Until URLLoader Finishes Loading?
Apr 13, 2011
I am trying to load the output of a php-file into some flash variables and then fill some textfields with those variables. But it seems like even though I have a completehandler it tries to fill the textfields before I get all the data.
Code:
function loadQuestion(){
var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("the url to my php script");
request.method = URLRequestMethod.GET;
var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
loader.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.VARIABLES;
Is it wrong of me to have the completeHandler inside the loadQuestion function? And is it wrong of me to assume that because I put the data in the textfields in the completeHandler it should w8 until its finished loading?

Im getting Error #2032 when my URLLoader complete event finishes firing. What I cant figure out is why. The complete event fires successful (I ran a number of trace statements to make sure it made it all the way to the end of the method with no error) and Im not getting any helpful output when I trap the IOError. Here is the error message:

I've made a little flash, with AS3, to view the data generated by some program I wrote... The data is in a .csv file and are loaded to the memory with a URLLoader object.
The flash loads well .csv files which can come to almost 50 MB in size... But when I try to load a file with 160 MB, the player just stop working... I run the last flash player version, outside of the browser...
I've heard that the Flash has limitations on the amount of memory it can store... But in another question, they say it has not.
What may be causing the crash? - I don't think it is the code, since it runs smooth for small files...

The code I have so far is included below. Right now the first swf (first of two loaded into main swf) (intro.swf) loads fine on mouseclick of the "go" button. However I would like the first swf to unLoad and the second swf to load ("europe.swf"). This will be a one frame swf that will link to various others. After multiple tutorials/forums I can't figure out how to get the second swf to load while the first unloads.
import flash.display.MovieClip; import flash.display.Loader; import flash.net.URLRequest; go.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goIntro); var loaderIntro:Loader = new Loader(); var contentIntro:MovieClip; function

I have created a very basic preloader using flash components 'Loader' and 'ProgressBar". It's job is to load an external swf movie clip/file.
Problem: When the preloader has finished doing it's 'thing', i.e. reaches 100%, it loads/or seeming reveals the external movie already underway i.e. not at the first frame.
I've read a few posts from "Whispers", and have concluded that the problem is that the movie is streaming whilst being loaded. And also that i need to be using "init" in regards to 'listener'.
However i really want to be able to apply this to the code i am using it, as i had just kinda gotten to grips with it (the code).
Is anyone able to tell me what a need to alter to get the preloader to finish loading the movie COMPLETELY before it starts to play.
------------
myProgressBar.mode = "manual";
myProgressBar.setProgress(0, 100);
myProgressBar._visible = true;

I'm trying to play an FLV using the Netstream class - standard stuff, really using nothing more complex than things you can find in the help files. I've created a control panel with a bar you can use to click and drag and scrub through the video.
Exporting to Flash Player 9, it's working fine and I can scrub through the video, but only while the FLV is still loading. As soon as it hits 100% the scrubbing (using Netstream.seek()) becomes incredibly unresponsive, almost to the point of crashing the player.
I've killed all ENTER_FRAMES, removed all unnecessary listeners and nullified everything I can think of but something massively resource-intensive seems to be kicking in as soon as the load finishes.
Has anyone ever seen this? I've never come across this and can't find anything similar across assorted forums.
Code below but I don't think the mouse-move drag actions are the problem! Fine in the Flash CS4 IDE, broken in the browser.
// Drag
private function dragVideo(e:MouseEvent):void {
// Match the x position of the dragger to the x position of the mouse
videoControls.progressBar.dragger.x = videoControls.progressBar.barInner.mouseX;

In a movie clip, I have a function named addObject(string). Inside that function I am loading another movie clip (say, myObj1_mc) using attachMovie. After loading, I need to set the string passed to the text field inside the myObj1_mc. But it is not possible to do this immediately, because the movie clip will take some time to load after the attachMovie call. Means if we set this string in the next frame, it will be working. But in my case, I have to call addObject multiple times (from a single frame). In each time, different movie clips (say, myObj1_mc, myObj2_mc, etc.) are created dynamically and texts are set. So it would be better if I can wait until the movie clip (myObj1_mc) is loaded completely so that I can set the text, before the addObject function exit.
how can we wait, until a movie clip attached is completely functional.

I have a script that takes lots of content and builds 1000s of MovieClips on the stage, does lots of drawing etc. Due to the high amount of work needed when the frame first loads this can sometimes be delayed by a second or two. The more the user uses the application the longer and longer this is likely to be (more data to siphon through and build). My question to you is how do I make sure the frame doesn't show (serve a loading image or something) until it is built? I don't want the user to see the skeleton of the page and then everything appear a second or two later.

I would like to load different images with Loader object and put them in an Array.can I use only one Loader object to load multiple images or I have to use one Loader object for each loaded image? This array is the base images collection from which I'll generate new Bitmap objects.My problem is that I have to wait the complete loading process before I can access to BitmapData.

I am loading a sound file with the URLLoader class passed to the URLRequest class, just as one would load any other external content type.
Code:
var loader:URLLoader=new URLLoader;
loader.load(new URLRequest("file.mp3"));
When the loading is complete I would like to pass the data to a Sound Object.
Code:
var mySound:Sound=e.currentTarget.data
The object returned on the complete event is of type flash.net::URLLoader.
Code:
e.currentTarget
How can I turn this URLLoader into a Sound Object?

I am currently doing a project which involves quite a large swf file at the end. I was wondering if anyone knows a way that i can easily make it so that at the begging, when first loading up the flash, it just loads the menu and a couple of other frames, but when i go onto play the game, it will load each level just before you play it, so that the player doesnt get bored from waiting right at the begging for a while when they can wait 5 seconds before each level.
Im pretty sure ive seen this done before but im not sure whether it is preparing it in that time, or downloading it. I want it so that there will be a 10-20 second wait for the game to load up, then you go to the menu, press play, loads the next frame, or certain number of frames, you play that level, then it keeps on doing this for all the levels.

I am building a simple swf that will load in variables from an asp page using a URLloader and URLRequest. The asp page loads in the current values from a SQL database but these values will change every second. My swf loops every 6 frames and loads the data. How much load this puts on the server? And when the server is busy might this cause a problem with the variables I am reading in?
Does AS3 run all actions on frame 1 before going to frame 2 etc? I don't know if this is the best way but my last variable in the ASP page is called Loaded and I test for it before moving on. My major concern is the load I am putting on the website but is this small? In firefox the status box constantly flickers transferring data from ... and waiting .. but in other browsers you can't see the activity.

My program reads a rather large data file that is crucial to the display of the program I am making.I have an event listener that waits for my loader to load all data from the file, and it then adds all the data (and parses it) to a 2d array.Unfortunately the program flow doesnt wait for the loading to finish, so when it checks the array, it is still empty because nothing is loaded into the array yet.

does anybody have a good explanation of the as operator? On one hand it seems to me, that it is often better to use as instead of instantiating a new object.But then there are situations, when this operator let's me down. For example when loading a text file in XML format through an URLLoader:
private function completeHandler(event:Event):void {
var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(event.target);
trace("completeHandler: " + loader.data);[code]...
Why do I have to use a constructor here? Why can't I say var x:XML = loader.data as XML; and save some memory?

I have reviewed my code several times and maybe I am missing something.Basically,I have a separate loader class that I want to communicate to a php file located in the same directory.That php file forms an xml markup within and returns the location of a background image from the database. As you can see from the code, I have event listeners for progress, loaded, and IOerror.This works fine in IE and Chrome. However in FF and Opera, my custom progress bar shows 100%, but the info bar shows "IO Error" (which is kind of a visible trace statement on the swf for informational purposes) and it does not go anywhere. Stuck.

I'm using URLLoader to load my external SWFs in as a ByteArray before use so I can preload them without the possibility of them playing prematurely. It's been working great so far, but I just ran into an issue. It's not loading question pools for Captivate quizzes. If I use Loader.load() for my quiz it works fine and the question pool loads. If I use URLLoader to get a ByteArray and then use Loader.loadBytes(), I get an error saying that it can't load the question pool. My code is below. If you comment out the urlLoader.load() line and use the loader.load() one instead, it'll work fine. Otherwise, I get an error.
Code:
var loader:Loader = new Loader();
var urlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
addChild(loader);
urlLoader.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.BINARY;
urlLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, done1);

We've got some sample videos on our website and I'm using the default FLVPlayback so viewers can see them. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for the video to begin playing and I was wondering if there was a way to put a message on the screen while it's loading that say something like "Please Wait While the Video Loads" and then have it disappear once it starts.
Right now the player window doesn't even show up until the video begins to play. The videos are .flv files that I have in a directory on our website and the FLVPlayback just references them.

I have a windows media video which I have converted to flash video, that I would like to have users play through on my webpage - and then after the video is completed, it would open another webpage automatically in a new window.
After looking through the web I can't find a way to do this, but it seems like it would be something that could be done. I have converted my windows video to flash format, embedded it on my stage and am ready to add action script. I know how to make the video a
button so that users would click on the video and then it would open a page, but I was hoping there would be a way that it could do
this automatically.

I'd like to know if there's a wait to have flash hold on a frame till a sound finishes playing. I'm guessing that this will require some sort of EventListener but I'm pretty new to AS 3.0 and I'm not sure how to do it. I've searched the forms but cant seem to find anything on how to achieve this either, but I think thats because I'm not sure of the correct terminology.
